Myst is like Marmite. you either love it or hate it. Me I love Myst, brings back memories of playing on my old PC with my first CD-Rom Drive... noisy bloody thing.
I remember back in the 90s everyone I knew was raving about this game. Sadly, I couldn't play it because my computer at the time didn't have a CD-ROM drive.
I don't think Myst was one of the best adventure games at all,. and it spoils every one of you 86 videos by having this among them. Sure,. Myst sold a lot. But this was only really in the USA.With the game having little impact in Europe. Also, it was not part of a genre as it was a game style all of it's own.If it had created a genre around it, that might have made a difference, but it didn't and it has become an anachronism in the history of gaming. This is here because it sold well. in the US
ive been obsessed with this game since I was a kid. kinda let down now, that i know you can beat it in a matter of minutes. also, the steam version of myst and riven work great on vista and 7.
I'd recommend the Case Book games if you're into FMV. They're doing some interesting work for sure; just played III and enjoyed it, though of course the level of puzzles aren't anywhere close to Myst.
I'd like to cover it eventually along with many other adventure games. I think I enjoyed IV the best out of all of them. Still some of the best graphics I've ever seen in a game.
Nice review, but no mention of Real Myst? I've loved this series for a while now, but only just started playing this beautifully remastered game, and will finally play past part 3 to the end. Likely most of your viewers won't mind dated graphics, but many who've resisted this masterpiece would find this more accommodating, though finding a copy can be harder.
Do you plan to cover sequels, maybe if their development is different enough, or makes history?
This game freaked me out when I played it back in the day. I thought the graphics were so amazing and it seemed so realistic and immersive. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and the perspective on the game.
I can't believe I've never heard of this game before. It looks great! About how many hours did it take you to play through? I will have to multiply that by 2 if I ever decide to play.
The version I played here has some built-in hints that keep you from having to do that. I think you'll be able to get through MYST if you're patient. Riven is a different matter. You'd really have to be a genius or extremely patient to get through that one without hints. Even with hints, it can be tricky. I'd probably start off with the first one or Myst IV if you want to get into it.
I used the original Myst in windows 3.11 booted from Dosbox .72 and also works in the newer .73 the only way I could find on a VISTA 64 machine. Riven on the other hand = not working at all. If you find a way let me know.

Also Think the music on myst is fantastic!

I didn't play video games from 1991-1999, but I subscribed to PC Gamer in 2000 and they were really harsh on Myst.

Certainly URU has an interesting story, but is trying once again to find life as a MMORPG.
