The peeing could be behavioral, but here's a PSA: when cats pee out of the box, there's often a urinary problem. They associate the box w/ pain, and so pee in other places. It's often caused by too much kibble in the diet. To avoid urinary problems, feed quality wet food 1-2x a week. Mix some water & dried cranberry in the offending cat's wet food (beef flavor works best) once a day, until they're going in the box again. It corrects the urine pH, helps with crystals, and helps fight bacteria.

Turns out his previous owners were anxious to get rid of him because he kept peeing in their bed (where he probably felt safest) and they never told me. They were feeding him low quality kibble. I gave him pure unsweetened cranberry juice every day for a week and put him and kept him on a B.A.R.F. diet. He has been in perfect health ever since! :)
