it all depends on what period the armour is. In this documentary they are discussing the classical o-yori model, used through the Gempei era from the Samurai's origins to the early 1400's. The later period armour used in Sengoku Jidai was called a Gosuke and was made nearly completely of metal.

@japantruthify01 You dreamed. Korea had been acolony of China for 1000 years long. So Korean culture came from China. Korean culture is devoluted chinese culture. Because Koreans have chinese name . KIM, LEE. PAK
Japan is isolated islands country. Japanese typical blood type is A. Koreans Typical blood type is B. NO RELATIVE with Korean. We don't need Korea at all.
@japantruthify01 Another aspect is season oriented expressionism in Japan which is rather unique and the unique importance of certain cultural icons such as the Cherry blossom festivals are fair well unique to Japan. Other aspects as you say such as clothing (Kimono) and the Tea ceremony have existed in one form or another in Asia but they do still refine/change these to their own socio-cultural means. Before you say it no im not Japanese im Indian and i think Japan has a beutiful culture (:
@japantruthify01 Japan has many aspects that render it unique from its esat asian neighbours. Its culture though being drawn not only from chinese and korean cultural norms but also the general buddhist philosophy and arts. For example the religion of buddhism did exist in China but Japa'ns is an amalgamation of local religion such as Shinto and buddhism. Bushido may have developed out of Korea as you say but that is not the be all and end all of a culture
@sonnetxi Most people think they just stabbed themself with a Dagger. But in real they had to open their whole stomach from left to right....a big 30-40 cm long cut,,when cut is finished the Kashaikunin (the Helper) cuts off your Head.A other Method was to cut the troath or bite off the toungue (when imprisoned by enemy)
japanese samurai culture originated in kore in the times of the great goguryeo dynasty mounted warriors fought the barbarian jurchens, as years go by and goguryeo fell samurang spirit died and warriors lost their purpose but their skills would carry on in japan and their knowledge of war they transmitted no nihon
I hope people are away that japanese armour was either made from metal or the very very thick leather form the back of a water buffalo (the kind of leather you need to saw and drill to work with) and some metal armour were even made that could withstand the shots from an arquebus.
@happosai27 Not so worthless. Soft armor might not offer the same protection as plate armor, but it was effective enough to be used throughout the world at any given time. Alexander, for example, was likely protected by layers of linen either sewn or glued together. Even in the middle ages, soldiers in the west occasionally used gambesons if they were too cheap to buy something to put over them.
@NoOne3234 well yes and they are all dead now.. lol but seriously. why use armor in japan if it can't protect against the most common weapons like blades or arrows and spears and so on. its like the guy said. "a fancy costume to die in" a little bit at least. im sure leather is still better than only fabric
A suit of armor made of silk (a very strong natural fiber) and hardened leather should provide some protection against sword strikes and arrows. It would probably mean the difference between getting a deep arrow wound and a fairly light one.
@NoOne3234 hm yes i guess that makes sense. i know that the first bulletproof vests were made from many layers of silk so it could work maybe. i still would prefer an armor of chainmail and plates than this cool looking but rather unprotective war costume if i had the choice.

@chiby1000 People only romanticize over it because the warrior culture of japan is extremeley interesting. Hey folks, harakiri was the traditional way to refer to seppuku. Harakiri (literally: belly cut) is composed of pure japanese words whereas seppuku (literally cut stomach) is formed with sounds of Chinese origin and thus appears more formal these days in a similar way that words of Latin or French origin are used in more formal context than native English words (e.g. meat/beef/veal).
@theScytheofGod hara means abdomen. It was a symbolic meaning for the samurai because that is where his courage lied. In the context of reading hakagure you'll come across a text where a retainer felt stomach pain, that is because he lack the courage to go into the battlefield.
They had such a rich culture, they put our forefathers to shame, and their life and culture was an inspiration to all - and even today, Japan is always an eager researcher in technology.
If you're ashamed of your forefathers than go kill yourself. I'm sick of such bored to death otakus, watching like 24h/day anime and believing that Japan was sooo superior, clearly having no idea what they are talking about.
I never said that I was ashamed of them. In fact, I admire my forefathers in Europe. They conquered the whole wide world, subjugating every other race, culture and nation.
But back in the days, when it came to culture and society, they were a bit better than us. far back in time
@krcvisinickaiuzimti You should learn a bit more. Harakiri is a vulgaric phrase for cutting your belly, but not for the (ritual) suicide, which is called seppuku. Doozo Yoroshiku!
How can I help but think about them? That's all I ever hear ; "the white man this, and the white man that."....Did you ever stop for a second to think about Waco or Ruby Ridge?....Empires murder people, regardless of race. I am just sick and tired of hearing about how it's only white people who do such things when the truth be told, everyone does them and has done them to everyone else. I just ask other peoples to tell the damn truth about it.
@TheFeralFury no actually only white people does that sort of thing, the Brits subdued nations in asia and africa to build their empire. the dutch, spanish and portugese would conquer parts of south east asia.
Japan's true owners are the Ainu....Then Barbarians came over from the mainland and drove them off of their land and exterminated them, thus creating the bastard nation of Japan......This is EXACTLY why we can't allow illegal immigration into our homelands.....A warning from history.
I do not where you come from, but i bet that you are an immigrant yourself!
During the industrialization(?) for example, when the cities grew, farmers would complain that people from the cities were stealing their land... Then when that was forgotten, the hatred was directed outside... It seems as though that there always is a reason to hate someone... even though YOU have created the hatred.
Yes Really. It's a matter of historical record. I created the hatred? Really? I would like to see your proof that I, TheFeralFury created the hatred, or are you saying that I am guilty because I am white? Oh but that's not racist of you to say that is it? What I am talking about HAS proof, but don't take my word for it. Look it up. It's here on youtube and other places.
Without knowledge of Learning, one will ultimately have no military victories.
One should not be envious of someone who has prospered by unjust deeds. Nor should he disdain someone who has fallen while adhering to the path of righteousness.
I would love to learn more about the swordsmith Masamune ( Forgive me if i spelled it wrong ) , cause i'm a sword collector. Can anybody recommend any good books on him?
I came across a book a few years ago, well looking up the art of war, i think it was "mid evil steel", i only looked over it but it had some knight armor, swords, and think at the end of the book there was the samurai
oh man....as cool as the medieval armor was in europe, Japanese samurai armor is badass to the max. Everything about it just looks cool. the scary/cool face mask, the large protective kabuto helmet, the fancy colors, etc. I guess my only complaint about the armor is that it appears to be held together by strings? Couldn't someone just cut those strings and the armor would just fall? I dunno, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
@Huhmasta Our design for modern military armor came from the idea of the samurai warrior. The Japanese are very attuned to nature and it's elements and they base their masks on certain things. One might choose a mask to make their appearance much older than they look.
Actually, 腹切りdoes mean belly cutting. 腹 (hara) means belly or stomach and 切り (kiri) is the nominative form of 切る(kiri), to cut. If you also ask any native Japanese speaker what "harakiri" means and they will say belly cutting.
you know if there was so much wrong with this documentry why dont you make your own? better yet why didnt you just stop watching it and save us your annoying comments?
They are, lemonsqueeyfun, a major television channel with loads of money who could very much afford to gather enough information from reliable and accurate sources that would at least show that American TV can actually be FULLY educative and not erroneous AGAIN...ur comment by the way was waist of time...why don't u comment on the clip, LIKE U'R SUPPOSED TO?
Japanese, as a language, is different to english and other germanic languages in that the same word can mean several different things. A words meaning generally depends on tone and the rest of the sentence or phrase.
Having studied a little Kenjutsu I'm going to side with the makers of the documentary on the meaning of "harakiri". Now put your dick back in your pants and stop trying to swing it in peoples faces :P
Yes, there is also the Buddhist understanding of "hara" that you mentioned but to say that harakiri doesn't mean belly cutting is simply wrong and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of Japanese language and culture at best or at worst a misguided self importance. I hope it is the former.
In that book it is called "cowardice grass." It also tells of a samurai who would be the 2nd at a particular seppeku. Because the performer groaned once the 2nd let it be known on account of this groan, "formerly he was a good friend of mine." The 2nd bad-mouthed him because he groaned. That's a hard act to follow. The belly was seen as the seat of soul. Thus after Seppeku was performed it was shown that the performer had no bad soul inside.
thanks a lot for uploading this interesting documentary!!! I enjoyed it very much and it makes fun to compare the medieval japan with their samurai to medieval europe with their knights - more paralells than differences between those not so very different cultural timeperiods ^^
I have to admit, all the different styles of armor they had is simply beautiful. I love their designs, especially the helmets. Not only is samurai armor national treasures, but they are also fabulous works of art.
Ah, actually, most of the duels he fought were with normal everyday samurai. He really wasn't a robin hood figure. He's known for his insightful teachings of Budo, but not necessarily for his "robin hood" fighting of the bad guy. He would have been torn apart in the conservatism of the Edo Jidai if that were his position(Remember the Shimabara Rebellion).

my grandfather has an old samurai armor.
when i was a child I was afraid to get close to it because an old armor has some strange atmosphere.
anyway,my granpa's one is made by hundreds of iron sticks and they are tied with thick cords.
I guess it's really hard to penetrate that armor with arrows or usual swords because you have to aim the exactlly same angles as iron sticks go.
sorry for my english :)

Age of leather armor is a from 9thcentury to 15thcentury . Moreover, not all leather.
In fact, combination of steel plate and leather plates. Is about 20% iron.
Every year, increasing the proportion of iron.
Prior to 8th century (ancient) and Later than the 16th century,Japanese armor is madeof iron.
Today, Japanese armor in the Museum is a thing of the sixteenth century onwards. It is mostly madeof iron.

The people of Japan are quite amazing.
They had such a rich culture, they put our forefathers to shame, and their life and culture was an inspiration to all - and even today, Japan is always an eager researcher in technology.
They deserve being called a people, and humans.
SinerAthin 1 year ago
@SinerAthin
" they put our forefathers to shame"
If you're ashamed of your forefathers than go kill yourself. I'm sick of such bored to death otakus, watching like 24h/day anime and believing that Japan was sooo superior, clearly having no idea what they are talking about.
MakroTeh 1 year ago
@MakroTeh
*Facepalm*
I never said that I was ashamed of them. In fact, I admire my forefathers in Europe. They conquered the whole wide world, subjugating every other race, culture and nation.
But back in the days, when it came to culture and society, they were a bit better than us. far back in time
SinerAthin 1 year ago
God, this documentary is stupid!!!
It's not called HARAKIRI, it's for god's sake SEPPUKU! DAMNED!
ExtremeDeathman 1 year ago
@ExtremeDeathman and its been called harakiri.learn littl bit more.or read yamamoto tsunemoto book hagakure.
krcvisinickaiuzimti 1 year ago
@krcvisinickaiuzimti You should learn a bit more. Harakiri is a vulgaric phrase for cutting your belly, but not for the (ritual) suicide, which is called seppuku. Doozo Yoroshiku!
ExtremeDeathman 1 year ago
@krcvisinickaiuzimti hara kiri is the western connotation of the word seppuku. The terminology is easier for us to comprehend.

TheFeralFury 2 years ago
@TheFeralFury no actually only white people does that sort of thing, the Brits subdued nations in asia and africa to build their empire. the dutch, spanish and portugese would conquer parts of south east asia.

Japan's true owners are the Ainu....Then Barbarians came over from the mainland and drove them off of their land and exterminated them, thus creating the bastard nation of Japan......This is EXACTLY why we can't allow illegal immigration into our homelands.....A warning from history.
TheFeralFury 2 years ago
... Really?
I do not where you come from, but i bet that you are an immigrant yourself!
During the industrialization(?) for example, when the cities grew, farmers would complain that people from the cities were stealing their land... Then when that was forgotten, the hatred was directed outside... It seems as though that there always is a reason to hate someone... even though YOU have created the hatred.
stenomm 2 years ago 2
TheFeralFury 2 years ago
Racist? No way! I'm part Japanese and part Danish! or, Yellow and white as you put it...
And i meant that the hatred comes from within, not that you've created all hatred in the world...
I meant to say that you can let go of it, and live happily with anyone you want... just that.
Sorry for the confusion... And no, your not guilty of any thing! :)

Its interesting how they give the real natives of Japan short shrift by referring to them as 'barbarians.'

I came across a book a few years ago, well looking up the art of war, i think it was "mid evil steel", i only looked over it but it had some knight armor, swords, and think at the end of the book there was the samurai
wolfboyak 2 years ago
"Secrets of the Samurai: A Survey of the Martial Arts of Feudal Japan" by Oscar Ratti and Adele Westbrook
It's a bit of a cheesy title, but the book is amazing, if you can get your hands on it.
It covers even the most obscure details of anything relating to the topic, including Masamune.
I would not call myself a great collector of Japanese history material, but this book always had a special place in my library.
Highly recommend it.

They did, it was also called Harakiri which means:
Hara = stomach (body's center)
Kiri = Cut

oh man....as cool as the medieval armor was in europe, Japanese samurai armor is badass to the max.
Huhmasta 2 years ago 2
@Huhmasta Our design for modern military armor came from the idea of the samurai warrior. The Japanese are very attuned to nature and it's elements and they base their masks on certain things. One might choose a mask to make their appearance much older than they look.

Actually, 腹切りdoes mean belly cutting. 腹 (hara) means belly or stomach and 切り (kiri) is the nominative form of 切る(kiri), to cut. If you also ask any native Japanese speaker what "harakiri" means and they will say belly cutting.

Matbronk 3 years ago 2
It's funny how so many people like to bash the History Channel for things like that. It's the documentaries that differ widely in credibility
LingEntityNoobi 2 years ago
aaaand, harakiri does NOT means "belly cuttig". The concept of hara in Budhism is the core "self" of a living being.
Matbronk 3 years ago
they said it literally means "belly cutting" AND last time i checked a concept and a meaning doesnt go hand in hand!
lemonsqueeyfun 3 years ago
Does hara literally mean belly?
Matbronk 3 years ago
Japanese, as a language, is different to english and other germanic languages in that the same word can mean several different things. A words meaning generally depends on tone and the rest of the sentence or phrase.
Having studied a little Kenjutsu I'm going to side with the makers of the documentary on the meaning of "harakiri". Now put your dick back in your pants and stop trying to swing it in peoples faces :P
TomNortherner 3 years ago
LOL at that last comment.
Huhmasta 2 years ago
Yes, there is also the Buddhist understanding of "hara" that you mentioned but to say that harakiri doesn't mean belly cutting is simply wrong and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of Japanese language and culture at best or at worst a misguided self importance. I hope it is the former.

The bow he's using is a few inches too short....they could've at least used a better imitation, since they did it for the armour...

i read hagakure and a text said somewhere that if you feel a stomach cramp that is a sign of cowardness.
KendoProdigy211 3 years ago
In that book it is called "cowardice grass." It also tells of a samurai who would be the 2nd at a particular seppeku. Because the performer groaned once the 2nd let it be known on account of this groan, "formerly he was a good friend of mine." The 2nd bad-mouthed him because he groaned. That's a hard act to follow. The belly was seen as the seat of soul. Thus after Seppeku was performed it was shown that the performer had no bad soul inside.
nor888vast695 3 years ago
Perhaps they performed Harikari in an attempt to destroy that feeling of fear that seems to exist in our abdomen when we are afraid.
Gqgangsterz10 3 years ago
Hara Kiri. The belly was thought to be the seat of the soul.

thanks a lot for uploading this interesting documentary!!! I enjoyed it very much and it makes fun to compare the medieval japan with their samurai to medieval europe with their knights - more paralells than differences between those not so very different cultural timeperiods ^^

The men Musashi killed, were indeed evil men, if Musashi had been just another tyrant like you say, his name would have been forgotten.
stardingo747 3 years ago
Ah, actually, most of the duels he fought were with normal everyday samurai. He really wasn't a robin hood figure. He's known for his insightful teachings of Budo, but not necessarily for his "robin hood" fighting of the bad guy. He would have been torn apart in the conservatism of the Edo Jidai if that were his position(Remember the Shimabara Rebellion).
