Marco33185 says it's the same in France & it's also the same here in England & the rest of Britain & Ireland. It's time to start the fightback ane thing we can all do is support the 'Occupy' movement all over the world.
And many thanks to Walter when so many musos who could say something are staying silent. It wouldn't have been like this with musos back in the day.
that is just why I advocate for strong union anarchy just like they did on the spanish revolution...it took a hell of a hitler bombing to defeat the uneducated working class, and lots of back stabbing...and that was spain in the 30's...small local cells of workers administrating from down to up in full participation!!! but hey...I might be wrong...Im not a phd.
The basis of capitalism ( and not that i'm saying that communism is any different here) is to gain the most profit the cheapest way. The profit ALWAYS goes to the fat cat, broker, banker.
The worker means NOTHING. They did once when the Unions were strong but they've been deemed troublemakers.
People on here say musicians are W.C. Walter Trout is but one can hardly call Sir Mick Jagger or Sir Eric Clapton W.C.
@Iamtoolmaster It's nothing new...it's part of the Victorian ideology when 5 yr old kids were sent to do the most dangerous jobs in printing works...for peanuts! . The idea was to make the people into slaves, take away sense of dignity, and cause the survival of the fittest(richest!).
This was why the Trade Union was formed in Britain , later in the USA..to protect the rights of the worker.
But the Union hardly exists today. How many strikes do we hear of these days?
Its so simple!! STRIKE JUST DO IT!!! Im from greece we have the sames problems...coz we have the same system the Capitalism..We need to change the system, to build a new one Sosialism-Communism..then all the factories will belong to us to the people...
Are you listening to this David Cameron? you probably don't know what that means - you don't like the man next door with the PHD because his daddy doesn't make money, so he shouldn't go to university. Ah, they call us the working class, but we sure aint working any more - watch the country grind to a halt David!!
Well done Walter your lyrics fits perfect to the situation in the modern world. In Germany the big companies earn a lot of money and put a lot of taxes in their own pocket. Afterwards they close the plants and switch to East Europe – the same story!
This is the sign of the times -the truth -well -wake up world -bad times are commin !-will just get wors -god help our childeren is all I can say !
great reality wake up for the plannet -( by the way -a great song !-thanks for posting ! )-the blind in the world -well one day your eyes will open !-have a great day all -gus
They would understand it completely. They are cold hearted SOB's who care only about their own money and power and how to make the rest of us pay for their pleasures.
@garyrs1 They would understand it BUT they wouldn't care. This same thing happened in the UK during Maggie Thatcher's reign. Reagan gave her some advice on how to crush the Unions.
She shut down all the steel works, coal mines. The backbone of Brit industry for centuries.
Imported coal from China. The reason is ,cheap cost/huge profits and in China people don't demonstrate for higher pay.
Would any American or Brit accept $50 a week as wages? They do in Mexico or China.
Very nice lyrics. This is a damn good song. And I thought Walter was getting boring and old after hear so many bad preformances by him here on Youtube. But in the studio he is cooking!
The story of the song is exactly what happen to me to the "T". I seen him play this after I lost my job. He can Bang the Strat and is in touch with the real people!
Quick question, Walter: If there's a Ph D. living next door to you and a local CEO getting a million dollar bonus (and considering your career as a "musician") ... Why are you calling yourself the working class?
Don't know how Walter would answer, but here's some thoughts:
(1) It's a work of art, not an autobiography; so the songwriter needn't call *himself* "the working class." He could just imagine a singer /narrator who is working class.
(2) Many Ph.D.'s are suffering from un- or underemployment and poverty; so having a Ph.D. on the unemployment line isn't as rare as you'd think.
(3) "Local CEO" probably isn't meant literally; it's an ironic gesture of familiarity.
The quote is "My next door neighbor Hes got a PhD Now hes in the unemployment line standing next to me"
Yes you are right a PhD doesn't guarantee employment in these difficult times - it may even hinder it due to over-qualification. But a song that's clearly meant as an anthem to voice concern should be honest.
I would feel as cheated if Bruce Springsteen were singing "Born in the USA" when he was in fact Canadian. Personal truth speaks in higher volumes than artistic licenses.
Musicians ARE working class. Those who do make it big worked their asses off to get to where they are and have to continue to do so to stay 'workin'. Have you never heard "Starving Artists?' You are just plain being an ass! BTW one of the legiondary Detroit Blues Bands, The Butler Twins(Sadly deceased) had a Philosophy Professor from WSU (PHD) playin lead guitar and an Anesthesiologist (PHD) playing Bass. Clarence and Curtis Butler worked at Ford Motor .
The example you reference completely undermines your argument. If they were both PhD.s, their professions (anesthesiologist and professor) classifies them as the elite and excludes them from your starving artists list. As a writer, I believe the suffering an artist endures is part of the process. Whereas, the working class does with no greater aspiration than to provide for their family. Artists, otoh, don't. So, counter-question: until WHEN did the Butler Twins work at Ford?
So you're saying that all of the "Starving Artists", like many of those who never reaped the monetary rewards of their "Labors" (works) and died poor never exisisted because they weren't starvin. They were just "processing". Brilliant!. The Twins worked at Ford when they first came to Detroit from Alabama. I worked for Ford for thirtyfive years and we used have our laughs about our experiences. They didn't last long but did hold various "working class hero" type jobs until their deaths.
@xyle9 Ha I meet the butler twins In Hamtramic Detroit Mi. years ago spoke with them when they lived above the Actic Salon in Hamtramic thy are great guys, but it was a bummer for them, someone just Broke in to there vehicle an stoled all their equipment.
Quick answer, xyle9: It's a good song with some great guitar. It is also timely and relevant. It would probably suit you better if you tried to figure out the meaning to the lyrics of "MacArthur's Park".
Ace song and video.

So they say that jobs are on the rise.........but.......the new jobs pay less and offer fewer work hours than the ones they have replaced.
And when you go to the store everything cost more and you get less. But, what do you get with less pay and higher prices????????
A skinny ass.
