  • Someone said that a girl was injured and an elderly woman died from a heart attack. Someone else who was a perpetrator was in a coma and died a few days later. No wait that was another steam pipe explosion incident.

  • Does anybody knows how many decibels it produced?

  • It's amazing how it looks kind of fake

  • People died.

    Others horribly burned.

    Businesses lost everything.

  • @vanek983 me 2

  • Awesome video!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hmm crazy! I'm glad no one got hurt. I wonder why stuff like this isn't in the news at all.

  • ok, i am a little nieve, but please can someone explain what these steam pipes are? and yes i gathered they are for steam but why do you need them?

  • The city's steam network provides high rise buildings with heat, and hot water. The steam can also power backup electric generators, and is used for cleaning dishes in restaurants an disinfecting sheets and robes in hospitals.

Though it may sound old fashioned, central steam networks are very efficient and are used in cities all around the world.

  • thankyou for your reply, i was expecting some smart ass to give me a "are you thick" answer but this is very informative. Thanks :)

  • Look up wikipedia "cogeneration" and "district heating". Lots more info! :)

  • @gguru1 I wonder if London has one. Somehow I doubt it.

  • @edj66 Parts of London have district heating systems that are MUCH newer than New York's.

  • Well that's clever? What idiots put a steam pipe under a city? Silly yanks.

  • Wonder how many hotdogs you can cook at once with a steamer like that. LOL

  • probly like 4...maybe 5

  • This is what's wrong with America...stuff blows up, people are in danger, asbestos and lead are spewing out of a giant hole in the ground.........and we need to get the best footage. To whoever posted this, I hope you went to the doctor after that, seeing as the fire department went in with HAZMAT suits on, and you stood right beside the thing.

  • HOLY FUCKING BOOM-NESS!!!

  • This is the best footage Ive seen so far. Thanks.

  • wow great view.. must of been crazy and nerve rackin at first.. kinda familiar of 9-11

  • I think I speak for all of us when I say...

Did the thought, "Hey, maybe I should run away from the large plumes of steam that could melt my face..," never cross your mind?!?!?!?!?

  • didn't something also happen with a transformer? this was some freaky stuff while being completely unaware of what was going on. I was about 15 blocks away when this happened. I couldn't see the Chrysler building, either, which frightened me thinking something had happened to that. This is a crazy video though.

maworeb, at what time did you see that?

  • I think I just saw the devil's face in the steam lol

  • I don't know about the devil's face, but I think iI saw some 'war of the worlds' type machines coming from there.

  • Crazy nice view.

  • your damn pretty close

  • tourguideStan, I am sure you know what you're talking about.

Coincidentally you make the following video one month this happened:

NYC Steam stacks explained by the expert

    June 10, 2007

Hey Folks out there look up the video!

    There's something about Stan.

  • It was probably the Decepticons...

sorry I just had to say that...

  • Wow, you were very close :O !

Rated it, favourited it and v-logged it :P

  • This may well be the result of an old pipe disintegrating, BUT, why would Mayor Bloomberg say immediately afterwards that it is NOT a Terrorist attach or a the result of Criminal Action? Is he psychic? How would anyone know so soon? Ideas?

  • idiot, Con Ed said it was one of their lines

  • ASS HOLE WAKE UP

  • WOW DUDE what a view you got thats sick.

  • Holy sh*t!!! You were so close to it. Could you feel heat? What building? Chrystler?

  • I was in the building above it on 41st and Lex. The first boom was amazing. Everyone thought the building was going to collapse. You could feel the building shaking. But it was ok. Another exciting thing in life.

  • hey did this happen right in fron of delmonico's gourmet???? i work there and i left at 4 pm...is that the building you are in...on top of delmonicos???
