I am so in love with this collaboration. I just know some of these wonderful, beautiful artists strayed outside of their comfort zone. I sit comfortably between the comfortable and the outside - However, each identity was preserved and highly respected. My heart sits comfortably with this beautiful fusion. I am a happy mutt violinist. You captured the feel and the honesty and passion.
OH!!!!! MY JOY!!!!! To hear these master violinists playing together (I'm sure all classically trained) Eileen - Celtic master, Regina, improvisationsal jazzer, and the dearest nasty classical violinist Nadja! Whoever put these 3 together is a GENIUS. These musical cats are my violin idols! Thank you for posting this, you brilliant person! But, most importantly, thank you dear composer for visualizing this masterpiece.
sorry, but those of you who do now know who Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg is are truly clueless about the modern violin. She blows everybody away, including all the popular male players. Her tone is completely unique. The Naumberg Festival was significant because of her age and that it was her first time. Get to know her!!
personally, I think it's quite an amazing thing to see these different genres of music blended together. It's really wonderful to watch the three blend so harmoniously, and with such different styles. This really is a wonderful piece.
I could almost agree agree with you in a different situation, but they've taken violinists from 3 styles and I don't know Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg, but I think Regina Carter is the most important Jazz violinist since Grapelli and Eileen Ivers is the face of modern Irish/American fiddle style. So maybe they picked them for being girls but more likely they picked them for being the best...
Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg studied with the late Dorothy Delay, one of the greatest violin teachers of our time at Juilliard. She also won the Naumberg competition which earned her considerable prestige in the musical community. So I would agree with you in that they were chosen for being part of the highest echelon in the musical community.
@TheNickyTams The Best? Ha. Ha. Eileen has a very proficient style of playing ... As does Liz Carroll, but if you want someone who can hold the substance and the soul if the tunes ... go find some CCÉ videos.
This 3 violins piece is one of my FAVs. I actually recorded when it was initially aired. The entire concert was GREAT but that piece at the end was AWESOME!!! THANKS so much for posting that!
Justin, that's a series of rolls. A roll is like a fast slurred triplet played on the base note and note direclty below on the scale - but with a grace note added by flicking a finger above to break the first note of the triplet. So 5 notes involved in all. Eivers executes it in a way reminscent of another great player, Liz Carrol (check her out at all costs - she was a big influence on Eivers), which requires great bow control and produces a highly rhythmic effect.
This is soo incredible! I've seen all three of them by themselves, and they are equally as amazing individually. I wish I could have been there to witness this though! I love Eileen...she my fav. The last time I saw her, we talked for about an hour about music! She's so nice!
the three graces having seen all of them in concert individually, this was plain nirvana. only complaint was the orchestration overpowered some of the passages.
Not to take away from any of the other fantastic musicians but there is something about Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Not only as a musician but as a person. It's as if you can fall in love with her by watching her smile, listening to her talk or hearing her play. I don't know. I can't put a name to it but she is certainly special.
I sent you a message to greater explain, hope you got a chance to read it and understand why I said meeting her wasn't the pleasantest experience, but I wouldn't change it for the world. =]
mm - I met her in person and she was super freakin cool! she has a very brisk/straight forward mannerism. very down to earth yet also very gracious. very much what I expected.
What I like is that all three seem to be having fun while they are doing this. The score by Chris Brubeck is wonderful, quite a nice amalgamation of styles here. Listening to Regina in the first section making her violin "weep" while playing a blues influenced motif was nice. Eileen's "hoedown" work was very colorful as well, she really got into it very nicely.I wondered if some of this was improvised, but nonetheless very enjoyable for one who does not listen to much "classical" music. GREAT !!
Finally!! my fav triple concerto is on youtube!!!
those 3 are awesome!!!!! I love Chris's works. he's a great composer and an amazing guy!! his blending of styles here is absolutely phenomenal!! no one can do it like he can!
idk who "dfxir" is referring to but all 3 play perfectly in tune.
it may sound out of tune a little but only because of the style. tuning wise, all 3 play perfectly. there is no out of tune here.
"dacocelt", thank you soooo much for uploading it!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure does look like her...did anyone else notice that Nadja seemed to have trouble getting into the groove when they were trading 4's? Kinda wierd, she's awesome and seems to assimilate other styles extremely well.
I think that Eileen and Regina have the potential to have an eqaul technique. I think a lot of your bias is bases on the styles that each of them play.
Yes well its my opinion. I personaly like Nadja the best. Ive heard works done by these three alone so I know and love each ones' personal style. They all have the same potential its just that I connect more to Nadja as a musician. But I must say during this piece I loved Eileens solo better than any one elses.
Tottaly awsome!!
