@Lot2learn I (and many others) have learned a lot from your postings in 2011 Roger. I especially enjoyed your recent Christmas songs that you posted. Happy New Year!
Hi Doug, I am fashioned by the way you are doing this. I used to play this song a lot but only in some medium tempo. Your harmonizing and the way you walk chromatically by changing every 4th beat is marvelous. I may give this song another try, maybe stealing some of your ideas if you don´t mind. Great work to start the New Year with.
How do you learn jazz? I have a bit of basic knowledge about music theory and what I know doesn't really seem connect to something like this. Where do you start out and how do you gradually get better?
@JerryRSun That's exactly what I've stuggled with. I don't really have a good answer though. Firstly listen to lots of jazz - I had to develop an ear first. Mark Levine's books The Jazz Piano Book and The Jazz Theory Book are the most commonly recommended, (I'm slowly working through the first).
@JerryRSun learn the basic chords first with the melody, intimately , in time.... later, separate the embellishments, isolate them, get a good feel, then integrate them back to a completed form while keeping it flexible.
This is just too perfect. It hurts
