That Stanley Urwin was their biggest mistake. Might've been a stoned idea in the first place, but it became a dire bloody drag to get through all that "charming" cockney yapping on "NUT GONE".Still a classic, but as a result became the least played of their albums.Probably even more so,in the U.S.. a market which they obviously would've liked to have cracked.Confused Steve went totally overboard with bloody "bluesrock" to get the Yanks onboard.Which deservedly so,went out like a candle, around'76.
Lost a bit of his manic charisma there already, might've been "clean",could've laid a bit more off the booze though. Other than that,,,it's a bloody shame he hadn't witnessed the Small Faces'royalties scam be resolved. He truly deserved it.
Who actually gives a toss if Steve is put into the rock and rubbish hall of fame. Any true Marriott fan doesn't give a shit because after 20 years it's just to late and most of the people in there are not good enough to kiss his backside. Steve was a one off he wrote some outstanding songs and could play the guitar with pure grace. Oh yes he had his ups and lot's of downs but the man was real musician . I for one miss Steve has the years go by.
keep your "pitiful" comments to your pitiful selves--why get on if you're going to criticize these artists? It's about as irritating as referring to them as "gods"
@lisalmitchell No one here is criticizing Steve's talent. He was the finest rock singer Britain has ever produced but he's reduced to talking to this foolish twit in a Boy George getup and not even allowed to play on the show because they thought him as old as Stanley Urwin. A tragic figure. Even now. 20 years after his death, he's finally being considered for induction into the the R&R Hall of Fame, but if he is voted in, it will be Rod Stewart standing on the stage that night, not him.
The first minute of the interview you can sense that Steve is a bit bothered by the interviewer's statements....the "surviving" comment as well as Humble Pie not being as successful as The Small Faces....you can hear it in Steve's voice and his frustrated laugh at 0:50.....the girl obviously was deeply into Bananarama and the GO GO's....Steve was a gentleman and a class act.
It's just not him being overweight and balding, although it is hard to see any trace of that beautiful, trendsetting little mod of just 17 years earlier. He's lost all spark here and seems completely beaten down. It's hard to watch.
Steve Marriots tenacity has followed him and will always be remembered in his guitar playing and his unique voice. He is without doubt the founder of the British blues movement . He is without a doubt a legend and should be recogninsed as such
@arbutus27 Exactly! Even Lonnie Donegan - very important man for making Leadbelly etc popular over here! The Trad Jazz scene nurtuted the up and coming R and B whiteys. Alexis Korner was involved; he straddlled the 2 styles. Lonnie Donegan was in Chris Barber's Jazz band. They all knew each other. @suncolad1958 Steve was many great things, but come on, founder of the British Blues Movement...even as as a Strve Marriott and Small Faces fan I can't take that, and nor would he have done.
She looks like a caricature of what an eighties trendy pop presenter would look like if some comedy troupe or other were to parody that time to amuse a modern audience.
I can't understand some of this, but it's clear that this interviewer doesn't know much about Steve Marriott. He seems quite together here, not as been reported about him. So talented, & so exploited by his management. It's a shame he never got the respect & money he rightly deserved! Combination of a lot of things gone wrong. but what a huge talent this guy was. RIP Steve!

I love Steve Marriott. Humble Pie was my first concert. But I can't understand a word they're saying. Could someone please translate this interview into English?
"Hello Mu" ( short for Muriel, the first name of the interviewer )."I don't know what that means...swimming?""I dunno ( don't know ), as far as I'm concerned, I've been working, I mean if that's surviving, I've been surviving....work's work innit ( isn't it ), you work all over the world, I spose ( suppose ) cos ( because) you don't play in like one little area for a length of time, you haven't survived in Northampton ( a British county )..I don't know, you know what I mean? you keep going...
"no, no, you see this is another thing, it did very well in America, didn't do that well in England, but it wasn't really geared for England, it had American management, they didn't like us coming here much in case we got homesick & stayed at home"
"well I was amazed & delighted, it was a great privelege because a bit of an old fogey & a square in a round hole foot lobber, it's such a compliment you know with ronnie lane, stevie & the others, we had a ball that day didn't we?"
"not half" ( US translation- we sure did! ) "tremendous fun" "were you mobbed in the street after that as being a pop star?" "well they gave me some marvellous ideas, you know...of course it took 10 years off my life..."
"and then later on I fell in my in grown toe nails, etc...( the rest of what he says is gobbledegook as Stanley Unwin was an entertainer who was famous for creating nonsensical words ).."it was a great joy you know, I still hear about the record too".."yeah, still doing well mate" "it's quite a classic" "it's good innit? ( it's good, isn't it? )" "you've got a band called packet of 3 & you're playing around the clubs & things"
"Packet of 3, available for bookings!" "what kind of people are you playing to now, do they remember the Small Faces, do they shout for "Itchycoo Park" & things?" "Yeah, some of 'em, they can shout for it but they don't get it, but er, that's not what we do, it's what they did" "do you find it unusual that people like mods, skinheads & punks & little kids coming to see you?" "No, it's great that you can bring all those together...there's mums & dads doing their knitting...
"Geezers ( people ) this big, with hair this big, there's mods, there's all sorts, it's a mixed bag, it's great" "and you're also fancying doing some producing aswell. I mean what are you going to do about that?" "I suppose that's next, innit ( isn't it ), if anyone wants me to do it that's the question innit, I don't know if they will!" "I'm sure they will Stevie, heavens above!" "Well, you learn so much, it's a shame if you keep it all to yourself innit?"
"yeah, any bands in particular you'd quite like to produce?" "No" ha ha ha..."no, no bands at all!" "I'll be honest with you, some bands come to me, and er I've always passed it over cos I've been too busy, so now I've got time to relax a bit I won't pass it over, but I've got nothing in sight, you know I won't go to someone & say can I produce you, I wouldn't say that" "whilst I've got you here, I'm going to use you because it's competition time.."
I was absolutely crazy about the New Faces and Steve Marriot when I was 14 in 1967. I saw them live at the ABC Cinema in Northampton and I was in the front row. When I saw Steve Marriot he had a terrible poxy skin and I was so disappointed that he wasn't as handsom as I had expected and just cried with disappoinment. I have been living in Italy for the past 30 years and didn't know he had died in a house fire. RIP Steve.
I saw Steve Marriott in a few places but he did a gig in the late 80's in a pub in Northampton and the power went off half way through the set 'not to worry' he said and out came the acoustic guitars! All or Nothing acoustic! He was having to shout, but he was still cracking up laughing!
4 ft something? Midget? Youre a funny guy... I wonder if Steve Marriott had accepted his height... When he named his band the SMALL FACES?? Maybe FamilyUSA can work that one out? Doh!
@FamilyUSA Actually, Steve was about 5'4". And when he and 5'5" Ronnie Lane got back together for a one-off album in 1980, they entitled it "Majik Mijits". Cause they were cool with being small. And they knew they were magical.
This woman was a quick hit on TV cos of her hair and bad fashion.. But with the fashion she wasnt seen again. Its not her fault, its the producers, for allowing someone with little intelligence to interview someone with amazing talent. Marriot didnt need to fret over moments like this as he was idolised by generations of people who loved his music. Remember it was the music industry changing that left him in the cold.. Shit bands like Depeche Mode and Duran Duran were seen as more appealing!
You label someone who for example wrote the definitive history of Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum...as having 'little intelligence'? lol maybe stop spouting the first thing that comes into your head...
If I had seen this in Canada,(I got U.K. passport), would have mortgaged the house, to pay him to produce my band. Dear God, the greatest ever, begging for bookings, " A fucking prophet is not appreciated in his own land".
I feel the same. As an american, I feel cheated that we didn't get more of his and the Small Faces stuff played o'er the airwaves and soundwaves. It is a shame that it's still hard to get Odgen's from retailers today.
Cheers, I brought the original sleeve back, and used it like a sleeve, ruining it, our generation read Spiderman#1, we didn't put it in sealed plastic, which may not have been invented then anyway.
Check Amazon they are most likely to have it on CD. I've got it and play is often. One can almost dream oneself back into the 60's. Steve is a rock GOD. The bee's knees.
People never appreciate what they have....Marriott, one of England's greatest songwriters/guitarists/vocalists & Unwin, one of England's greatest comic poets....
Unwin gets forgotten & poor old Steve scraped a living on the club circuit.
So called "mod father" Weller never looked Steve up.
Steve never sold out,,,,was a bit of a twat with an ego yes, but he never sold out.
Mac said about Steve:.... "more electric than anyone you've ever met, funniest guy I've ever met, sharpest guy I've ever met, cleverest guy I've ever met....."
He drove them all nuts, but what a huge talent. Sadly missed.
In later years he always looked like he'd just woken up after a bender. But I don't know of any pop star who was more down-to-earth or charming, given his immense talent. And he always seemed happy to be here well after he had stopped having hits and was just a working musician. God bless.
@jonomutiny I agree completely - did she have no understanding of who she was talking to ? How does an ignorant and talentless Boy George impersonator like her get a job anywhere???
@clubninjarock Humble Pie were of much lower profile than Small Faces. "Natural Born Boogie" was the only single I recall and it did not show Steve Marriott's INCREDIBLE talent to any advantage. It was illogical that Rod Stewart took the Faces anywhere - Marriott was a miles better singer. A different league - up there with Paul Rodgers.
@georgebur Rod Stewart had a great rock voice. I wasn't there but I was under the impression that the Pie was huge for the 71-72 time period. We agree that Marriott was amazing...I'm also not surprised his style did not translate to massive radio play.
@clubninjarock He had tons of radio play in Small Faces. With Humble Pie, there was nothing as friendly for Commercial Radio. And then they vanished. Whoosh!
the greatest white soul singer england ever produced, he really did have that something special...will always be a God to me, at least we will always have his music. good luck happydaystoytown71 with the baby.great name! :-)
not seen this before...shame the great man has been gone so long.......but never forgotten.
my next child is due in 9 wks & if hopefully he is a boy MARRIOTT Joseph Kee will be born...me daughter is already called AUTUMN in tribute to the greatest band & singer ever!
aww... mymarriott! 18 years gone yesterday and missed more then ever. I hope he, Plonk and Ridley are zoomin 'round out in the universe somewhere still 'cause their music & spirit still lives on here. I say it all the time but no Rock musician could ever touch Marriott to me, shine on Steve - u r missed.
Aww Marriott!!!!!. Wish there were more interviews of him - wish there more musicians like him! Thanks for posting this - it's great! I miss Marriott's music, just shows what a down to earth and funny guy he was and how about that Stanley Unwin eh? Haha! Cheers & Stay cool wontcha?

@FamilyUSA Actually, Steve was about 5'4". And when he and 5'5" Ronnie Lane got back together for a one-off album in 1980, they entitled it "Majik Mijits". Cause they were cool with being small. And they knew they were magical.

I always thought RON WOOD was longer than that with his agnello&davide croco boots...Steve was small alright but my my my - what a VOICE

Her name is Muriel Grey and she gave up TV after about 10 years.

Dear God, the greatest ever, begging for bookings, " A fucking prophet is not appreciated in his own land".
locheelad2 2 years ago 3
I feel the same. As an american, I feel cheated that we didn't get more of his and the Small Faces stuff played o'er the airwaves and soundwaves. It is a shame that it's still hard to get Odgen's from retailers today.
danielion999 2 years ago 2
Cheers, I brought the original sleeve back, and used it like a sleeve, ruining it, our generation read Spiderman#1, we didn't put it in sealed plastic, which may not have been invented then anyway.
locheelad2 2 years ago
Check Amazon they are most likely to have it on CD. I've got it and play is often. One can almost dream oneself back into the 60's. Steve is a rock GOD. The bee's knees.

People never appreciate what they have....Marriott, one of England's greatest songwriters/guitarists/vocalists & Unwin, one of England's greatest comic poets....
Unwin gets forgotten & poor old Steve scraped a living on the club circuit.
So called "mod father" Weller never looked Steve up.
Steve never sold out,,,,was a bit of a twat with an ego yes, but he never sold out.

Age & booze can be a nasty thing...Jezus ,here, just 10 years already, after Humble Pie ,he looks and sounds like a cockney yobbo.
Compare this to The Small Faces days ,and you'll almost cry.
Still... we can't all be like Ronnie Wood.or the rest of The Faces for that matter.

A different league - up there with Paul Rodgers.
georgebur 9 months ago
@georgebur Rod Stewart had a great rock voice. I wasn't there but I was under the impression that the Pie was huge for the 71-72 time period. We agree that Marriott was amazing...I'm also not surprised his style did not translate to massive radio play.
clubninjarock 9 months ago
@clubninjarock He had tons of radio play in Small Faces. With Humble Pie, there was nothing as friendly for Commercial Radio. And then they vanished. Whoosh!
georgebur 9 months ago
@georgebur Competely the other way around in the United States. Humble Pie was huge. Small Faces are - tragically - unknown.
