  • clean driking water is key.

  • I think Save The Children USA is a great organization, but what do they do differently compared with for example Unicef or Red Cross?

  • I will donate 5% of my total income once I graduate from collage.

  • save the children organization keeps most of that money, it doesnt give all of the money to the children which is SAD!!!!!!!

  • @trishalwlr Hi - when Save the Children asked for overhead (which any charity needs and requires), I asked them to do so separately. And I raised money for overhead separately from money raised to help the poor.

Even if I didn't do that, Save the Children is a rather efficient organization. You can see how much (or little) goes to overhead right on their site. Hope this helps explain things.

  • Thank u for helping these kids!

  • hey i got a question for an expert........i build a sand filter with dr manz prints, its been running for about 4 weeks with well water ,ph going inn is 7.4, ppm 1300,,,coming out of the filter ph is 7.2 and ppm still 1300 . is it possible to lower ppm as much as possible to 0 with this filter ????

  • I just donated 2,000 dollars

  • @icarly2580 To Save the Children?

  • its a disgrace that theres such poverty in the world in thiss day and age, we have to tackle the CAUSES of poverty and war in order to stop this happening because there is no need for this, therres enough food on the planet to feed the entires woorlds ppl 50 times over lol yet theres still ppl starving to death? says it all

  • @UnculturedProject I just started my own NGO with my friends. We are a group of high school Freshmans that want to change lives in Africa. 25 % of Ethiopia relies on the profit they make through coffee beans. What we are doing is buying the coffee for free trade from Ethiopia, going through UPS ( already implemented), and getting the coffee beans in big stacks so we can grind them up and sell them to our high school and different local places. Do you have any suggestions to get it noticed?

  • I wish I could do more. In this day and age you would think we could give everyone free clean water and build schools everywhere. We don't make use of all human potential everywhere. such a shame.

  • I would have to say buy the scales

  • This is really fantastic; what a remarkable story and what a great way to make a difference! If you guys are still looking for a way to reach out please check out World of Children. We find people who are doing outstanding work with kids all over the world and then give them an award and the cash they need to continue their great work! If you know someone you'd like to nominate, go to our website and click "nominate"

  • @WorldOfChildren You should qualify that your award only applies to those who own a non-profit organization. So, although you think this is "really fantastic" you have setup your awards such that I'm excluded from all the potential categories :P

  • @UnculturedProject Some of our nomination standards are strict for sure. I (the poster) have only been with the org for week now, so I'm still learning some of the details. However, please know that I find your project personally inspiring, and if nothing else we can know that we are both working towards similar ends. And if you know anyone else who is doing great work and owns a nonprofit (or if you ever do own one yourself) we will still be here! :-)

  • @WorldOfChildren With so many people doing things outside of the non-profit ecosystem, I hope you can make the case with your org to have a category for regular folks like me in the future :)

  • When a child leaves the womb they are totally innocent. YOU could have been born in a hut in the hinterlands of Angola. Would that have been your fault? If all of us in USA and Western Europe sent $20 per month we'd supply clean water, healthy food, multi-vitamins and basic medical care (antibiotics, etc.). $20 per household could give every child on the planet a fighting chance. We must follow up with education. We'd fix the basic problems in 2 generations. Not doing so is inexcusable!

  • kids exist and some dont have a job.how are they supose to donate?

  • fuck you and everybody else my money bbbaaaaaaaaaaaaa im a talking goaat

  • I have a tree=D

  • What was the final decision? What did you end up spending the money on? And how can we donate money? What do you still need to do in the future?

  • This video is part of a series. If you see in the right side of this page, you will notice that there is a "part 2" to this series :)

  • You were leaving such a nice and kind comment. And then you killed it with your second line :(

  • It brings a tear to my eye to see the poor, yet smiling kids in your videos. They can still be so happy about the simple things and not give up so easily. I wish I could be that strong.

I know, if people help and give enough those countries can rebuild and succeed. But think about it, honestly, do you ever see that happening in Sudan? How about Uganda? Or any Sub Saharan African country?

Please, it may offend you, but try and see my point.

  • I HAVE A TREE! =D

  • I can only win Mario Kart? LOl

  • commenting for awesome

  • It is great to give a helping hand when in need. Thank you

  • So my only question is how does a person check out ANY organization, to make sure the money is being well spent. It's not giving that bothers me. It's when I find out that I put $10 in someone's kettle and out of $500 collected, only about $50 actually gets used properly for the needy.???

If "save the children" is making full and proper use of donations, then congratulations. I personally would like to know which of the charity groups has the best % of money getting to the root of the problem.

  • Great question. I must say, my endorsement of Save the Children does NOT come from their ledgers. They have great accounting though.

My endorsement comes from my on-site experience of their conduct and seeing just exactly how they spend people's donations with my own eyes.

  • You're a tactful person "Uncultured Project". That was a pretty good reply. I may look into the organization. Right now things are tough budget wise.

Wish you well in the good endeavors though.

  • Hey Shawn,

Do you know where can I view the full lecture of Jeffry Sachs at Notre Dame College?

  • Yep - check Notre Dame's official YouTube channel or do a search on YouTube.

  • I need moral support for an annual national/global Save Our Children Day! Post your comments on my Save Our Children by Peter Love video/song to help get sponsors for a Save Our Children DAY. The seed has been planted with the first ever SOC Day in Aberdeen, MS, 2005. Their Mayor signed a SOC Day Proclamation. Visit my not for profit The Peter Love Save Our Children Foundation to learn more/ hear my anti-child abuse songs. St. Louis, MO, wants a SOC Day/Concert, June 2010. Please help!

  • +Oi, so i was wondering what is or was the biggest donation you have gotten?

+I may be able to match that price if i knew what it was. ^^

+But regardless if i know or not Ill still donate.

  • Single biggest donation from a single donor?

  • yep ^^

  • Why are people so concerned about other people in other countries? I dont care if I get labeled selfish or a dick, but all of the money i make i keep for myself. I wouldnt even give a cent if i won the lottery. Why? Why should I, its my money.

  • Okay that's fine - it's a free country.

  • you should start spending that money on yourself. That way i caould start respecting you.

  • For some inexplicable reason, earning your respect isn't on my list of life goals.

  • You win I'm stumped

  • If I spend some money on myself will you respect me? What should I spend it on?

  • i dont care i just post comments like that to piss people off sometimes. However, i do think its a joke to spend your money on things like this. But hey, you can do what you want.

  • but would you not spend your money on it to clear your conscience

  • well, i wouldnt expect people to give handouts to me so by giving i feel like i am supporting the problem. Those people dug themselves into a hole so why should i help get them out?

  • You know "BriDirt", I've got to think you never had much for friends or love in your family. Get a life and help someone else, and you might actually feel good about yourself.

P.S. I don't hate you. I just consider you someone that must have missed out on some really good things in life...like love and compassion.

  • "Those people dug themselves into a hole"? excuse me? so you are saying poor people made the cyclone sidr happen? thats what your saying? wow you've got issues man.

  • Uh, yes. So you are saying they didnt put themselves in the situation they are in? This makes no sense. Even if you are born into poverty, you have the choice to do yourself better. Like i said before, the best way to solve a homeless problem is to stop giving. The same applies for here.

  • Wait, so you DO think they MADE Cyclone Sidr happen, Ok dude, I'm convinced... you have no idea what the word 'Cyclone' means. if you want to think these peoples' homes magically disappeared, and people can get themselves out of poverty just by wishing hard enough... do so.. whatever helps you sleep at night, dude.

  • I'm just gonna throw this out there...

Exactly how do you expect the poor to pay for education to get themselves out of the situation, or even care about getting out, for that matter, while their lives and those they love are at risk? Your argument is totally flawed, and I don't see how you can just tell the poor that they need to do better for themselves.

  • @BriDirt That really depends on the country you're in and the opportunities given. In the United States and Canada there are many support systems and welfare programs to offer opportunities. When you're in a country with poor infrastructure and weak education and abysmal living conditions people spend their time trying to live with what they have before aiming for more. They don't know more, they've never known more. They must provide basics before they can hope to move further.

  • hey can we forget about the past and worry about the future???

    can we just get alone??

  • if nobody gave the homeless anything i bet they would go away

  • what about people who drink or drugs but dont know about it like the tramp in the box next to him injects him all the time?

thats like not his fault so does he not deserve your money?

  • i know this guy!!!

  • Actually, the majority of the money donated by celebs and our government don't even make it to the people who trully need it. Most poverty stricken countries have corrupt governments who usually take the money and or food donated from the US and other developed nations and invest it into their military, not the people. So really they're not wealthy at all. I'd also like to say that we can eradicate poverty, but we'll never fully get rid of it so don't get your hopes up. Even Jesus said that.

  • this is really inspiring. can you provide more information on how i can volunteer myself?

    thank you

  • hey squirtiscool4u - I think the world is a lot more connected than you realize. I honestly believe that making the world a better place for others, makes it a better place for us all.

The US has a lot of debt and does have a lot of issues on its plate. But, it may actually find its solution by investing in the well-being of those it shares this planet with. It's just my two cents.

  • are you serious? the usa is so rich it is not even funny. everyone is so worried about our recessio. yeah, there are people losing their jobs and in poverty here. and they are important! but, out poorest people are even better off than many people in the rest of the world. none of that is their fault. the video itself said that the area was dammaged by a cyclone. they got into that situation because of nature. was hurricane katrina the people of new orlean's fault? no. that's crazy.

  • You have a computer. You have internet. You have shelter. You have clean water. Stop being selfish.

  • Awesome work, seriously.

This video is such a huge, huge deal to me...the fact that you can create something like this and share it with us is incredibly inspiring. This is proof that times are changing and that we're definitely on the right track. portugalreis - If you put as much energy toward a cause instead of bashing it, you'd realize how wrong you really are. Change is in the details - it is people like uncultured that are the ICONS for a global shift in perspective.

  • you can try, but you can never eradicate poverty.. you can limit it.. but never all of it

  • @portugalreis - even if that's true, you still have a decision to make. Do you try and fight poverty? Or do you criticize those who try and/or say it's a futile venture?

It's decisions like these that define who we are.

  • Its not futile, but this isnt the best time to try to eradicate it,, with the economic crisis and all,

In Europe in the recent Election the extremist parts gained power..the British national...Benito Mussolinis grand-daughter has a seat in the parliment, shes with a extremist group..

I can remember my father whase a journalist in Guine-Bissau and he fotographed some new Hospital beds in the general hospital given by the portugues goverment, 3 weeks later they were gone, stolen,

  • @portugalreis If we ignore the plight of others because we have problems at home - we'll never focus on problems abroad. Home will never be perfect. Also, if you take the "we have problems at home, lets deal with that first" attitude - you'll fall prey to what the British extremist parties like the BNP want. Don't fall for that.

  • Continuation

If u give money to corrput goverments like the goverment of Guine buissau they will waste it, but whate you are doing is private, and u ur-self are suprevising it, good luck..but there will always be the less fortunate..always

  • You find me a government that isn't corrupt and I'll show you a government that doesn't exist. As a Canadian, even my home gov't gets the occassional scandal. The historic and multi-century British parliament is currently entangled in a corruption scandal.

Saying you shouldn't help because of corruption is a scapegoat.

  • I have a question, the people you are working to help are untouchabulls right? the Dallets? if they are then no matter how much you help them Indiand Sociaty will never treat them has equals,

  • I love reading your comments portugalreis because you seem hell-bent on proving my work is futile. I don't claim I can change the world. But what I can tell you is that nothing ever changes by listening to those who say "things will never change".

Keep watching - let's find out what happens.

  • Awesome project,

    Best of luck

If we all did the same, wouldnt we be able to end poverty worldwide?.

that would be truly awesome :0)

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks for the very insightful video. This is one of the best videos I have seen regarding sanitation devices.

Please google the icddrb org article *Arsenic contamination in Matlab, Bangladesh.* It recommends many devices such as rainwater harvesting, safi filters for tube well water, plastic filters for surface water and pond sand filters.

There are many affordable devices we can use to stop water borne diseases. Great job.

  • Very interesting project!

  • Why not look at a long term goal to concur poverty: monetary reform (where money isnt debt)

Watch either one of these on YouTube to educate yourselves on how the world is slaves to these

national banks and how 3rd world suffers as well:

    Money as Debt

    Zeitgeist Addendum

    Money Masters

  • HOW CAN I DONATE THROUGH PAYPAL ?

  • I actually wrote a paper including some information about the Save the Children foundation and i have respect for those who actually go out into the world and try to make a change as well as those who make donations!!! :D

    -kendra

  • respect...

  • You know what abraham? Don't trust me? Don't donate. It's just that simple.

Had you bothered to watch this entire video you would have realized this is neither a fundraiser nor an appeal for funds.

Had you bothered to even click around and seen my work, you would have realized that I'm neither a company, nor American, nor did I use these funds to support myself.

But you were too busy passing judgment to bother looking up anything.

    - Shawn (from a rural village trying to actually help ppl)

  • I bet the bulk of your $12 would go to his cause. But I guess you want to know where you put your coffee money wisely.

  • You rock! Keep the world spinning, such a great cause and so great to see what a difference it's making ;)

  • Bravo for the action.

  • #2 and #5.i plan on donating some money myself.you're a great person and i wish you luck with the project

  • well i wish them luck i gave $60.00 nd option 5 nd 2

  • I wish you luck, Shawn! DFTBA!

  • thanks

  • Be well, be safe, and I hope that whatever choices you make, they will help the greatest number of people.

    Stay awesome Shawn!

  • Hey Shawn!

Sorry I didn't get to you sooner and my apologies for not posting a video response. I'm currently having sound problems with my webcam. Anyways, if it were up to me, I would choose options 2 and 3 for certain, option 4 if you you still have money left over to do it. I think basic necessities are the most vital concerns. Water is life, period. There are SO many people in this world without access to clean drinking water. Child development is easily the next priority, then sanitation.

  • Options 1 and 2

  • #2.

  • health comes first so option number 2 then 5

  • my school just had a guest speaker from save the children today. i rlly want to go and help out

    um i think option 2

    and then secondly option 5

  • opcion nº 5

  • option # 5 =D

  • #2 Pond Sand Filter.

  • sand filter

  • pond sand filter!!

  • i would have to say #2 because water is the basis of life

  • Option #5:

    Repair a Damaged School!

  • pond sand filter

  • Sand filter

  • No.5

  • All of the options you have suggested are practical and beneficial. But I would prefer the pond sand filter.

  • Filter!!!

    =)

  • I vote for #2 Pond Sand Filter, as drinking water is the most important thing.

I once got sick after drinking contaminated water (I was dehydrated, it was very hot, all local shops were already closed. So I drank the tap water although I knew it was contaminated. I have never felt so desperate for drinking water like then. I knew I was fucked, either way).

  • Pond Sand Filter

  • Pond sand filter

  • Deep Tube Well and Pond Sand Filter and if here is enaugh money Salter Scales

  • Hi Shawn, I vote for option number 2, the Pond Salt Filter, I think that the outcome and results will be very positive in many ways and in a long term as well. Clean water is an essential part of life for everybody. Great Job Shawn! You are an example to all of us...you really are making it possible...

  • Pond sand filter

  • Option 2

    sand filter

  • im just sitting down lookin at the vids im not doing anything i wish i cud im only 16 though and im in malaysia

  • My vote: PSF (Pond Sand Filter)

  • Pond sand filter

  • Thanks for subscribing by the way :)

  • Life giving water gets my vote, probably more urgent even though the scales for the babies would help too.

  • Holy shit is that MrBabyMan from digg? 0:09

  • I'm putting in my vote for the Pond Sand Filter and so glad to be doing my small part in your project :)

  • I vote to repair the school house.

  • Pond sand filter, I believe would be the best for the people

  • i could talk forever about how great and inspiring you are but i'll just make it short:

    i vote for the PSF!

    <3

  • I think the sand filter. I think it would do a lot of people good for a long time. With more donations you can do some of the other options next.

  • i vote sand filter

  • are you dead?

  • No I'm here. I just had to make a trip back home. I'll be back in Bangladesh to execute this vote in the near future though. I'm being productive by working on transferring the funds to Save the Children while I'm in North America.

  • Ok good I was worried.

  • GBU bro keep up the good work ,

  • I vote for the Pond Sand Filter... one for my back garden would be good too...

  • Wow. Thats hard, they are all good ideas. But I seem to think the school might benefit the most in the long term. but wow, hard to pick one.

  • You shawn, are made of awesome, me, being a fellow bengali, had to show my parents your amazing story... you are an inspiration, to everyone who knows you

  • Hey thanks for the kind words :) Support from the Bengali community means a lot to me :)

  • After sending money them , the next step is to send expert to educate them so they can earn higher salary.

" Feed a man a fish , you fed him for today , teach a man to fish , you fed him for his life ".

  • Wow! You are really doing an awesome job. What a great person you are! I salute you. Keep up the great work.

How can I get into your list? I want to donate. It's not much, but I would love to help. Take care.

  • Sure, I just have to stress I'm not a charity - I'm doing this all as a private citizen. There is a link on my site for donations. You can find it at uncultured(dot)com/donations

  • Thanks for the reply :)

  • Hey man I used to live near toronto!

Well I would just like to say I think what your doing is a great thing and you should keep it up!

I just wish there were more people like you in the world then poverty might not be so uncommon : /

Well I say go for the PSF thing I mean water is more essential to survive then education.

Well just taking the time to say you're doing a great thing.

  • hey im wondering if you do anything with life straws?

  • Yeah I have some to give away - just haven't had the chance to yet. I think you can actually see the one I use myself around my neck in part of this video.

  • ya i thought you were wearing a lifestraw wasn't sure if it was one or a safe carry thing. One of me teachers goes to Zimbabwe for the summer and this summer he gave out over 2000 lifestraws

  • Wow - 2000? Did he do like fundraising to buy them and stuff?

  • he fund raises the whole year, and sells jewelery which the Zimbabweans make

  • nice :)

  • there is no poverty there is only the force.

  • wow you are a great person for doing this go with the pond sand filter because everybody should have acess to clean drinking water

  • my vote would go for the pond sand filter. you are doing an amazing job out there, i'm working toward helping the poor of the world , teach then, feed them etc... and eventualy give them a job in my own company once i teached them my work, then i will ask them to do the same thing to other poors ppl and will support them. that is my life project.

( dont give a fish to a poor, teach him how to fish to get food for the rest of his life)

  • youtube: i challenge u, poverty!

    poverty: bring it!

youtube: muhahaha! i will throw money at u!

poverty: nooooo!! how did u no my weakness! :(

youtube: lol, everybody know ur weaknes! >:)

    poverty: nooooooooo!!!!

  • That was an EPIC comment! Thanks for this :D

  • this should be an advertisment for birth control

  • Because only the rich are supposed to pass on their genes? :P Although I do admit, the birth rate does need to lower - it's just not sustainable as it is now. But, at the same time, a lot of families have a high birth rate because they want children but there is a high infant mortality...

  • Good reply! More people should realize this!!!

  • I vote for help in this order

    1. Build a Pond Sand Filter

    2. Build a School Latrine

    3. Provide 80 Salter Scales to Fight Malnutrition

  • I would say you should build a Pond Sand Filter and/or build a School Latrine. This video was very moving and opened my eyes to what some people have to endure. I want to help and make there world a better place to live in. Thank you for doing this.

  • Honestly, i believe that the sand filters and pumps should be repaired/refurbished, because they can still learn without that school house, given that the weather is fine, but I think having a more sanitary water supply is much more vital to make sure that their communities stay clear of tragic and easily preventable disease outbreaks. I dont know about the climate in the area but basically i say this: If it rains constantly- repair the school, other wise make sure the water system is safe first

  • lol funny vid

  • I'll donate a liver

  • Build a School Latrine

  • There is something we can do to help the so called "developing countries", and that is to expose the nasty bastards who are stopping aid money and other provisions from ever getting anywhere near to where they are needed! Like the American govt, the elite who control the entire world etc. Forgotten about 911? It was an inside job! look up alex jones and see the light.

  • I really don't belive that this is the matter, in fact most of the time that a peace/help organization is held back is when the country's government prohibits them from entering their country and help their people, seen in places such as Somalia, Burma, and plenty of other places in Africa. there is really nothing the goverment or private party can do to prevent charity money from reaching its destination and i dont think anyone would have the heart to do such a thing

  • Pond Sand Filter.

    best idea.

I'm going to donate 20 dollars on Friday. I promise.

  • Don't worry if you can't. The reason I put up this up for a vote is because there is already enough money to do at least any one of these options.

And it's not like there is only one village that needs a pond sand filter or just one school that's damaged. Hopefully this video will get people to think about how we can solve this problems on a large scale.

This project is definitely not about fundraising. I'd appreciate a subscription over a donation any day :)

  • Thanks for replying so fast!

and okay, i understand. Im still going to donate it though because i think its a great cause and i guess the more money the better? with more money maybe you can do two of the options!

i did subscribe though and im spreading the word about this project so im trying to do as much as i can for it :]

  • well you know what, after reading more of the information ive figured that since its already supported and since all of the money might not get donated just to this, ill donate it to Save the children directly.

  • That's a good idea - because then I don't need to touch the money and you get a tax write-off since Save the Children is a registered charity.

If you donate online - you can't specify which country or where the money goes. But I *think* (I'm not sure) if you donate by mailing a cheque you can attach a letter. So you could send them a cheque saying "use this to build a PSF in Bangladesh" or something if you wanted :)

  • and yeah you're right. I'm thinking that some of these donations could be used to help other people in other areas well. Hopefully, even if it is something different, it can be used for something equally awesome :)

  • i think that you should use the money to rebuild the school.

    =) peace. Xx.

p.s i think what your doing is amazing.

  • Thanks for your vote - and for subscribing :)

I'm just amazed at how many people from around the world are supporting this little project I'm doing. Without that, this video would not be possible.

  • -Build a pond sand filter

    -Build a school latrine

    -Build a Deep Tube Well

  • Hi Shawn,

My choices are: 1. The Pond Sand Filter

    2. The School Latrine

I am going to donate right now... I hope this video will inspire some people to donate so you can implement more options than you originally thought you would.

    Good luck!

    -Sylvia

  • Thanks Sylvia :-) I just wanted to confirm your donation went through and I received it!
