How is it a disgrace that someone was prepared to go to such symbolic lengths to defend the very democracy that the house is supposed to represent?

He is a disgrace to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second and a disgrace to Parliament..To think we actually elect people who act like that. The mace symbolises Her Majestys Authority, and I think the Deputy Speaker should have dealth with that a lot better.
The mace symbolises the Queens authority, but picking up the mace and placing it on the benches has been a show of protest since the interregnum as a show of Parliaments sovereignity over legislative decisions and that Parliament will not be pushed about by the Executive. John McDonnell was within his rights to pick up the mace and place it on the benches, it was not contempt of Parliament, it was showing that Parliament is now powerless due to presidential style leadership by the last 3 PMs
