As I recall, the hand operated gear selector, if there, is on the side of the bike which has sidecar mounts installed, typically here in the USA, they are on the right.
What I like about those bikes are the little details. Things like this hinge at the rear fender, right below the passenger's seat. I think the roads of that time made this a necessity. Or the cardan shaft. These motorcycles were built to last.
not that the mopeds were bad, but in the 80's they couldn't compete with the FS1's and MB/MT's which were cheaper faster but had no soul at all and had a weak frame.
Well, I suppose the point I was wishing to convey was that Zundapp made good motorcycles over all but they kept getting smaller as their market share diminished. Gone is the Zuendapp and long lives the BMW. There is something to survival of the fittest.,but I wonder what caused their death?. maybe poor management?
that's all. BTW, Eventually I'll find enough parts to restore my '58 250 SuperSabre. It wasn't a fast bike but very unique and enjoyable to ride...
I think BMW was able to compete longer, because they were more successful with their cars. Zündapp started working on small cars in the 50s but failed miserably. This led to financial problems and the Nuremberg site had to be sold. In the 60s, people started either buying a car or a moped, motorcycles weren't that popular anymore. In the 70s interest in motorcycles arose again, but not more as hobby, not out necessity. BMW had the longer breath and more money.
The ultimate decline was caused by the japanese competition, I think. Zündapp started to react on trends set by Japanese manufacturers when it already was too late. A lot of models looked a bit outdated at that time. They were pricier, but often were better. Some 80ccm models had the luxury of front brakes similar to those of much larger BMWs. The decline in interest of mofas and moped was another nail in the coffin.

@Humorgous two hypotheses come to mind: improper installation/sizing of replacement parts, and a failed oiling system.

Exactly Art Deco, thats the words I was looking for. Such style, and these bikes were pretty darn tough too, to invade the muddy Russian roads

Its a shame that Zundapp was demoted into making mopeds. A welcomed death soon followed.
It's a shame. Zundapp made excellent motorcycles.
