It's a better idea to mix Armor with Mech. Inf. units, with some Artillery thrown around as well. Armor and Artillery are much better at attacking (Artillery has the most attack for a land unit) but worse at defending.

I'm also surprised you didn't tell your cities that were making Mech. Inf. units to make a Carrier and fill it with Bombers and maybe some Fighters.
