:29 It started about a mile or 2 from my house. We live on the stateline of Kansas/Missouri, and Joplin is our place to go for everything. We are there every single day, my husband works there. Those houses at 1:45 are where we take our kids trick or treating during halloween, right next to the twin hills country club. I've lived in Joplin 2 different times. It's so crazy to see this, because you never think it could happen to where you live. Take the warnings seriously!

Climatologists predicted a while back that extreme weather events will become more severe and more common. The Tuscaloosa tornado was labelled as the most deadly one ever until this monster came along. It got very big very fast!

@blklightning330 No one knew this was going to hit Joplin as an EF5. I assume you have never been storm chasing, it's pure adrenaline. Plus it's not like they just filmed it and left. They assisted for a long time helping people in the town.
I lived there 9 years of my life, and I could barley even tell where I was, even though were I livped wasn't destroyed . I was standing on my front porch wondering what was happening. I still have nightmares because of the tornado and damage.

This is what you get people of Missouri! You meth head, mountain dew drinking, cigarette smoking, twinkie eating, Nascar watching, Jerry Springer loving, trailer court living, food stamp spending, no account, no good, dirty pieces of white trash. You have wrought the wrath of God Almighty! On your knees and REPENT!!!! Change you ignorant ways! NOW!! It is an affront to the LORD! For this has been said by the one and only true living prophet of God, Jack Straw from Wichita. Amen.
@jackstrawfrmwchta I'm pretty sure that talking smack on God's creations aka us "white trash" folks from missouri isn't exactly what He would want you to be doing. So how about rather than bashing people for NO REASON you spread God's word in a much more appropriate and positive way. And you know what?? I EAT TWINKIES AND WASH THEM DOWN WITH MOUNTAIN DEW AND GOD STILL LOVES ME ANYWAY!!!
@itsracheldudeeee No, you are mistaken. If you are eating twinkies and drinking mountain dew, He does not love you. He despises you. For you have desecrated the very vessel that He hath provided for your soul. Please start taking better care of your body. Eat healthy food and live a clean life. It is the least you can do to show Him thanks.
@jackstrawfrmwchta and what drug are you on that said you are the prophet of god? but you go ahead and believe what ever your little heart desires, but i'm pretty sure a twinkie didn't cause a tornado, you might want to seek professional help? or go to church once in a while, because idk what god you're worshiping, but it's people like you that makes people who believe in a religion look bad.
@itsracheldudeeee People who believe in religion look bad because they're foolish imbeciles who take as fact, a ridiculous, thousand year old superstition. You blindly believe, through "faith", that Jesus was the son of God, born of a virgin, walked on water, and, in true zombie fashion, was resurrected from the dead. You'll believe a talking snake, the devil, convinced the first women, made from a rib, to eat forbidden fruit. But yet you doubt I may be a prophet?
@jackstrawfrmwchta there's no doubt in my mind when it comes to knowing you're not a prophet. but I do know one thing...you're a hypocrite. how can you sit here and talk trash on people who believe in religion but yet you say you believe in God? Religion is simply the belief in a higher being or power, and since you believe in God, you believe in religion. So if you wanna call yourself a foolish imbecile (which you clearly did, although it was indirect) then I'll gladly agree with you.
@itsracheldudeeee Then maybe you are not a foolish imbecile. Still take it easy on the twinkies and mountain dew. Not for God, but for yourself. If there is a "God" I'm sure he or she is indifferent about both twinkies and tornadoes.
@jackstrawfrmwchta Im not a atheist but I do think this fellow who your talking to is a well crazy person. There are many false prophet's and he is likely one of them so I find him rather insulting even though im none denominational.
@bigJ09z I am the one and only true prophet of God almighty! Praise be! Get on your knees and pray to ME! Jack Straw from Wichita! Baddest Injun this side the Mississippi River! It amazes me how quickly that tornado developed into a wedge.. Too bad it didn't stay in a field somewhere. My thoughts are with the people of Joplin.
omgosh this is orrible it did sooo much destruction did u know extreme makeover home edition did 7 houses there then the cancled the show not because of doing 7 houses jusyt because...
I live in Joplin, Missouri, and people seem to have forgotten that it is not over for alot of us. We are a town of 55K, and when you calculate the number of people that lost their homes it was 6700 homes, with an average of 3 people per household... that is 20K or more. Please we stil need people to come and help us build back. Homes of Hope for Joplin is building 20 homes for Tornado Survivors. Please we still need your help
I was half a street from being devistated by this tornado. I was on Annie Baxter and 22nd. I looked to my left everything was gone, to the right just downed tree's. My sister however, was not so lucky. While she lived, she knew her house would never stand a tornado (Kentucky and 24th street directly behind joplin high) she fled seeing it coming and ended up in home depot who took the hardest hit. She was one of the few to survive in that building.
this is prove of climate change and global warming. these storms have gotton worse over the past 10 years. We've never seen a storm like this. And now 89 people are dead. It's horrific.
@ForeverSunny3 Meteorologists were saying at the time that there are cycles of intense tornado outbreaks every 50 years or so. This terrible event and the other storms that broke out over that horrific 3 day period were part of an established weather pattern.
@soylentteal ? idk what exactly your saying, but if you look at the weather patterns for the year 2011, you will find and increase of tornadoes, hurricanes and droughts. It is informed, and I suggest you do some research.
@ForeverSunny3 One year doth not a trend make. One of the records broken (# of twisters in a day) was from 1974...how "warm" was our globe back then? I think you Al Snore drones would blame global warming--I mean climate change--I mean whatever the hell you're calling it now--for an overdrawn bank account.
@soylentteal it's not even worth arguing with you. I'm going to school for engineering, and I work with scientists everyday. They laugh at people who believe that global warming doesn't exsist. Yes, it is not confirmed because data is changing everyday. Nothing is confirmed by scientists, because new research is always found. They arn't 100% sure what is causing global warming, but 99.9% of all scientist know it's real, and is a major problem. So be some ignorant ass somewhere else.
@ForeverSunny3 I really don't see that global warming had anything to do with this monster it just had perfect condition's to form. Now I haven't seen any evidence for global warming but I don't think it caused this powerful and destructive EF-5. This has more to do with La Niña and the fact the hold and cold air and the jet stream and atmospheric rotation and humidity along with upper air sheer and high instability in the atmosphere. 99.9%?? No maybe 30-25% do
@bigJ09z scientists are not trying to promote it, because most people are making changes. But it is a fact that within the past 10 years, the weather patterns have become more rapid because of the warming of our atmosphere. maybe this has happend before, but many other people died around the world because of more stronger and violent typhoons, hurricanes and tornadoes. It's aweful.
@ForeverSunny3 Yes they are trying to promote it if global warming was happening we would have less tornadoes. Because if it actually was the air would warmer everywhere and one of the main things that makes tornadoes is cold air and warm air colliding. So have you have heard of the weather pattern El Niño or La Niña?? You seem to confuse weather patterns with global warming which is junk science if I remember correctly the earth has actually been cooler in temperature the hotter.
@tampatampa404 I'm just concerned about the well being of our future generations. That's all. And just because it's not affecting us severely now, doesn't mean it won't in the future.
@S0vereignty That's the same exact thing I noticed myself; I'm watching this thing go from a near-transparent, dirt-kicking funnel cloud to touching down and swelling so grotesquely wide it literally loses its form and looks like the damn clouds just collapsed to the ground and were dragging... All within TEN SECONDS FLAT... and I'm just thinking to myself, "This is fucking ridiculous, I can't possibly be seeing this shit..."
Im so sorry for the people who had to live through this horrible nightmare,It grew into a monster quick.I agree it is not "beautiful" Its something I cant even imagine or want to experience
its not this tornado , but i have watched the chasers on the weather channel,,and they comment,,oh what a beautiful tornado,, really?? how can something that does so much damage and kill people be beautiful??????????? and yes i survived the tornado,, my home did not and it was not beautiful my work was destroyed and it was not beauTIFUL iam now unemployed and IT IS NOT BEAUTIFUL
@SkinDeep13X "'oh my gosh' the single most annoying phrase in the English language!"
Perhaps, but it is still the best footage I've seen to date(not to mention the real freight train sound quality). That thing just exploded from nothing into over a mile wide!
I am from Joplin. This is my home. I would not live anywhere else. When you are from southern Missouri a little thing like a tornado will not destroy you. We are a very close knit community. We don't grow up and leave home and never come back. We stay around and care for our parents and grandparents. We take care of each other. It is a cultural more. We are rebuilding.
@seramonster26 has the town recovered yet? i really hope so i live in west memephis so obviouly this tornado didnt efect me but other ones have but never an F-5, wow your so brave going through this expeience i hope for the best for you
that is not a town, it is a suburban subdivision in the middle of nowhere. time to build a business district, a walkable community now. what a horrible disaster. I hope a better plan can be made in terms of livability. Less driving, more getting out and walking.
@xXAliceTheHedgehogXx Nothing just happens for a reason, so you believe in carma? well you are living a lie and what happend here was a total disaster, the second deadliest tornado on record and people like you spout vomit about carma and equilibrium disgusting!!!!!
Wow...Hard to believe people would wish something like this on another and try to find someone to blame. Its nature and nature does not evolve around people. I was in the 4-9-11 tornado and it was nothing like this but still horrifying enough.
@TheChe0101 i suppose your another ones of these sad fuck that thinks it was good that these all those tornados that that swept through last year was a good thing? not to sure how people being killed and homes destroyed is a good thing but hey, you must be must be sick in the head to think that.
and if you went to school your know we don't get them over here, were be lucky to even get a ef0
lets hope all the people that were hit have got their lives back to normal
My school had to go under tornado watch for an hour or two that day. Or maybe the day after. Somewhere around there xP weather was really crazy for those few days.
This is an invaluable record of a tornado which will still be written about a century from now. There are many indications it was a unique storm in many ways. The formation of the storm shown here has already helped understanding of what made this storm so powerful. Thank you for getting this footage of the multiple funnels forming because it helps clarify what followed, a tornado consisting of at least seven tornadoes within, some evidently forming upward from the ground.
I can't believe my boyfriend and I along with our dogs survived this thing. I never thought I would be tested in a manner such as this. We were lucky to recover what we did unlike so many others. Nor did we have any losses in either of our families. My little sister and I went to school with Will Norton and his older sister. Rest in Peace Will. Forever memorialized
interesting, if its punishment for stealing native lands, then why the hell does ok have the worst track record for tornadoes, i swear, where are selfish, stupid, and complete morons bred, lets go and talk as much trash to those who lost so much in these 500+ tornadoes we had just this year in the U.S, not to mention all the other disasters we have faced. just keep your god hating mouth shut unless you have something respectful to say.

ForeverSunny3 1 month ago
@ForeverSunny3 Meteorologists were saying at the time that there are cycles of intense tornado outbreaks every 50 years or so. This terrible event and the other storms that broke out over that horrific 3 day period were part of an established weather pattern.
Venckman 1 month ago
@ForeverSunny3 This kind of uninformed post is so typical of your ilk.
soylentteal 1 month ago
@soylentteal ? idk what exactly your saying, but if you look at the weather patterns for the year 2011, you will find and increase of tornadoes, hurricanes and droughts. It is informed, and I suggest you do some research.
ForeverSunny3 1 month ago
@ForeverSunny3 One year doth not a trend make. One of the records broken (# of twisters in a day) was from 1974...how "warm" was our globe back then? I think you Al Snore drones would blame global warming--I mean climate change--I mean whatever the hell you're calling it now--for an overdrawn bank account.
soylentteal 1 month ago
@soylentteal it's not even worth arguing with you. I'm going to school for engineering, and I work with scientists everyday. They laugh at people who believe that global warming doesn't exsist. Yes, it is not confirmed because data is changing everyday. Nothing is confirmed by scientists, because new research is always found. They arn't 100% sure what is causing global warming, but 99.9% of all scientist know it's real, and is a major problem. So be some ignorant ass somewhere else.
ForeverSunny3 1 month ago
@ForeverSunny3 I really don't see that global warming had anything to do with this monster it just had perfect condition's to form. Now I haven't seen any evidence for global warming but I don't think it caused this powerful and destructive EF-5. This has more to do with La Niña and the fact the hold and cold air and the jet stream and atmospheric rotation and humidity along with upper air sheer and high instability in the atmosphere. 99.9%?? No maybe 30-25% do
bigJ09z 1 month ago
@ForeverSunny3 Honestly if someone tries to use this catastrophic event to promote global warming I would be disgusted.
bigJ09z 1 month ago
@bigJ09z scientists are not trying to promote it, because most people are making changes. But it is a fact that within the past 10 years, the weather patterns have become more rapid because of the warming of our atmosphere. maybe this has happend before, but many other people died around the world because of more stronger and violent typhoons, hurricanes and tornadoes. It's aweful.
ForeverSunny3 1 month ago
@ForeverSunny3 Yes they are trying to promote it if global warming was happening we would have less tornadoes. Because if it actually was the air would warmer everywhere and one of the main things that makes tornadoes is cold air and warm air colliding. So have you have heard of the weather pattern El Niño or La Niña?? You seem to confuse weather patterns with global warming which is junk science if I remember correctly the earth has actually been cooler in temperature the hotter.
bigJ09z 1 month ago
@ForeverSunny3 scientists also think evolution is real too, but clearly i know its not real

S0vereignty 1 month ago
@S0vereignty That's the same exact thing I noticed myself; I'm watching this thing go from a near-transparent, dirt-kicking funnel cloud to touching down and swelling so grotesquely wide it literally loses its form and looks like the damn clouds just collapsed to the ground and were dragging... All within TEN SECONDS FLAT... and I'm just thinking to myself, "This is fucking ridiculous, I can't possibly be seeing this shit..."

We are rebuilding.

that is not a town, it is a suburban subdivision in the middle of nowhere. time to build a business district, a walkable community now. what a horrible disaster. I hope a better plan can be made in terms of livability. Less driving, more getting out and walking.
