Bass lines are completely ignored in popular music. They are treated just like this necessity stepping stone that you gotta put in the song, and so then they always end up super lame and cliche. Finally an artist who puts so much focus into it, A LOT of focus.
I really know nothing about bass playing and would really like to hear from a bass player a purely technical judgement.
Anyway it seems to me that more than the technique itself the bass playing is allowing a whole new level of expression for the man, truly amazing turn for Tom, astonishingly expressive and fine tuned live experience.
@loopback69 i agree. The roll is out the fucking window; i mean that's what so much "X" is a good "Y" player stuff boils down to. It's a different paradigm. His band mates are partially programed contributors. He's the shit, and pulls much of what he does from the legacy of bass players, but that comparison ends at a much earlier and broader point.
@loopback69 i'm not a bass player myself, but a friend of mine who has played the bass for more than fifteen years told me after seeing SQPR live, that he will probably never reach that level...
Tom Jenkinson is possibly the only man who can do freestyle bass over drillin' amen breaks and saw-triangle-square waves and make it sound more than 100% badass
I just watched a bunch of heavy weights like Wooten ,Bailey, Bona,Oteil ,you name them, the Pusher just melted my mind, and destroyed them all in pure freshness, I don't think i've responded to any one bass solo as much, cackling in joy! thank you for the always fresh inspiration, a true leader in freedom, Jimmy would be proud and blown away!.. ...come back to montreal please, I need air to breathe!
I wish he would just play with a fucking band already. They brought transformers back - lets get weather report back too.

But if there are some "Squarepusher lessons" someday, and if I'm still poor at playing bass, I'll buy them.
