@gullis187 he was supposed to! that's what he told the people he was training with, and they created a video about it it's called "terere, return of a champion" you can find it on youtube...
Notice that at no time in this fight did Marcelo ever get in the position to dominate, Terere never let him! Notice the smooth guard pass at the begining when Marcelo tries to pull guard, Notice how Terere just skips aroud his Marcelo legs an passes the guard!
Terere was just as filthy in no gi! Marcelo is good but he could never beat Fernando "Terere" Augusto Silva. Terere has beaten just about everybody he's ever rolled with....He is Alliance Pedigree....Trained with Leo, Ricardo, and Comprido! He beat the imfamous Nino "Elvis" Schembri to become world champ in 2000 and the spanked Garcia in 2003! He is one of two to become a World Champion at each belt he attained. from white to black! Check out his No Gi fights an tell me he's not a legend!
The best part about Terere is that his style is so fundamental and clean. Heavy hips, tons of pressure, good movement, solid passes and absolutely textbook, high percentage finishing.
If Terere hadn't stopped no. In my opinion he'd still be the best pound for pound in the world. But, with Marcelo's rapid improvement and Terere's personal trouble, I find it hard to believe the he could defeat Marcelo today. Maybe if he gets his life together, gets back to training hard and makes a real effort he can become The King once again.
snake guard aka andaconda guard or leglock guard is one leg is trapped between your two legs. The opponent's DOES NOT cross your body. If it did you'd then have 50/50 position. Leglock guard has the same attacks as 50/50 but 50/50 makes it much easier to disrupt an opponent's balance. Leglock guard is used to set up the 50/50 these days. damien maia shows leglock/snake/andaconda guard on his DVD. The science of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Hope i helped.
no. Leglock guard and 50/50 guard are both variations of half-guard. Put simply 50/50 is an inverted heel hook position used a guard and leglock guard is a standard heel hook position used as a guard. Because they can't be applied in the same manner as half-guard the names were changed so the positions wouldnt get confused. I hope that clarifies it for you.
@themasterplan23 You're right. His game no-gi is but scoot into butterfly work arm drag stuff. Since people can control the pants its a lot harder to get butterfly hooks that being said if you can get in the person usually goes flying in seconds as the lapels give you crazy good control.
nah terere beat him twice terere was the best when he was competing man galvao has said terere was the best hes ever rolled with. terere trained galvao and cobrinha
@Narukaflame As did Telles. Telles gets almost no credit for the work he put into that team yet, all those guys(terere, cobrinha, galvao, sergio moares) all hit sweeps when they turtle. Give the guy his due. No offense to you in particular it just seems unfair. Telles is one of, if not, the most underrated BJJ players ever. No disrepect to terere either the guy is amazing I've given to Marcelo's fund for him twice now. I'm just calling it like I see it.
There is so much good stuff going on, and you can see how BJJ ended up where it is now in 2009. At 0.34 Garcia forces Demian Maia's snake guard but doesn't do much but try to go to X-Guard (2.43.). Terere blocks it and pushes the leg to the side where Garcia almost has a 50/50(2.53) but again bjj is now where it's at because of players like these guys. Not people are pros with X, snake, and 50/50 but these guys were starting to do this probably long before the 2003 worlds. This was great!!!
Its obvious Fernando is not playing with a full deck.. He's probably a few fries short of a happy meal.. But he is still by far one of my favorite grapplers.
terere is someone i would like to see compete again. especially in the u.s. his style seems to overwelm people. what happened to his team? i think TT?
He went crazy on a plane, i think he punched someone and bit a flight attendant. he was jailed in the u.s for 2 months and hasnt competed since. after that eduardo telles left TT breaking the team up. evidentally he is thinking about teaching again, but he hasnt even trained more than a couple times since 2004.
i dont think marcelo is better than terere personally

Damien maia calls it the anaconda guard or the snake guard.
i notice that marcelo uses it in the gi a lot. I guess its hard to play the butt scoot game with the gi.

My BJJ instructor from Brazil told me that Terere is recovered in a psychic center because of a mental breakdown.

Apparently not because there are people at the moment trying to gain money so Terere can go back into rehabilitation.
