I have a friend who denied US citizenship (his parents got it, and his parents asked him to apply but he didn't) so that he can serve in the Korean army. There are patriotic koreans out there.

Because YSJ fled to the U.S. from a mandatory Korean military service (usually 2 years, but they reduced it recently to 1.5 years).
The catch here is that, he lied to the public, saying that he will join the military service because he is Korean. After dragging it out for quite some time, he ended up fleeing to the U.S. which caused a huge controversy in Korea.
That is why people still hate YSJ for lying, and acting like he was a good-being.
Unfortunately, no one has the real story. U.S. citizenship can take MANY years to complete, I know this since I had the same issues. As far as he knew, when he made this promise to go to the military, he had not yet gotten his U.S. citizenship. His U.S. citizenship just happened to go through prior to his having to enlist, so he went to America. He did NOT abandon the military service, but was actually inelligible for it as he'd become an American citizen.
