A wonderful performance most appreciated by all opera lovers. Their chemistry was perfect. I cannot understand how "100Singers" can write "most of us know her "Carmen"..., a great document, but unfortunately there was Mario del Monaco at her side: Loud, crude, near to destroy the whole performance with his ridiculous manner to change french Don José into sicilian Turiddu.” Ignorance, fanaticism? Everybody has an opinion, has the write to, but not such a brutal insult to MdM!!

Del Monaco è stato il primo cantante non di lingua francese a cantare la Carmen e Sansone e Dalila all'operà di Parigi in lingua originale e avere un successo inimmaginabile.... saluti

it's really very difficult for two singers to sing in different languages together!!! but they were great singers!my maestro has sung with arkhipova and said that she was magnificent!!!!

It was pretty standard practise in the early days when singers of different nationalities were used. They found it easier than re-learning a role in another language! If you know the opera well enough you'll know the other people's lines no matter what language they sing. Still, less than ideal for us! I like their chemistry. They were having quite an affair offstage at this time.

@TheChiambretti @TheChiambretti Read what I wrote, you donkey, I said it was better that way (that he sang in Italian) because his French was really ugly.... You should read twice before you answer since you obviously don't have an adequate command of the English language.

If you want to hear him in French, try the studio recording with Resnik you'll see what I mean... that's if you have a decent ear :-)

Credo sia osceno che in una stessa rappresentazione due cantanti cantino in 2 differenti lingue ... capisco l'Europa unita ... ma non uccidiamo la musica. In disco canto bene anche io !!!!!

@TheChiambretti Ma era una cosa perfettamente normale all'epoca (1959), si faceva anche in Italia, solo vent'anni fa a Praga ho sentito un trovatore in Italiano e ceco! è inutile scandalizzarsi. Detto questo, io non difendo certo del Monaco ed il suo canto forzato, rigido e musicalmente sgrammaticato, la signora Arkhipova invece era una grandissima cantante ma qui fra tenore e direttore che possibilità aveva? Bisogna guardare questi documenti con un occhio al giusto dell'epoca

Great recording! It's funny though, they both singing in foreigh languages, he is in Italian, she is in Russian.
