This is a great example of when television was highly entertaining. It takes a lot of talent to keep your composure when clowning around like these two legends did, and still pull it off so well. The younger generation doesn't realize what good television or entertainment is these days.
this is sooooo funny. judy's comedic timing is amazing (along with the voice and personality, which we all know). martha is pee-in-your pants funny, and sounds just fantastic!
Saw Martha in Vietnam in 65 she put on a awsome show she was a great preformer and she went to the firebases and did a show where nobody else would go. god bless her soul
@petcherb I heard she did that type of touring for the guys in the service - & greatly admire that she did just that! So very glad you put your post on here to bring attention to what she contributed.
@1:00 Judy looks like she's about to wring Martha's neck...then again who could blame her? Being told "YOU BLEW IT AGAIN JUDY!" must have been pretty annoying, but damn was it funny.
An eldersister we know used to see Martha Raye and her girlfriend at the Eagle Bar on santa monica blvd in the late 1970s - early 1980s. Another sister said Martha used to frequent PROBE and LOVED amyl!
Harry James is the one who did I've That Song Before".The Ames Brothers also did a veresion of Moonlight Cocktails.Never heard the words to Penn 6-5000.At Last is from the movie Orchestra Wives.Never heard words to St Louis Blues March before
I love this clip so much. Any time I want a good laugh I watch it. They don't make them like this anymore. I must have watched it over 25 times already.
It's how funny they were both married to compose David Rose who wrote the score to Bonanza. In fact Judy was seeing David while he was still married to Martha Raye. But this is truly a GEM of a clip
you know what i really love about this...from 2:54 - 3:50 Martha is doing everything to throw Judy off...then with just one line ("she is mine at last") Judy totally kills Martha :D
I have all 8 season of bewitched. Season 1&2 were done in B&W and when I ordered them they also had those two season colorized and the you cannot really tell that they were done in B&W. the JUDY FRANK &DEAN SHOW IN 1962 was taped in B&W then colorized back in the early 90's and it looks crappy I think if they get the company that colorized Bewitched seasons 1&2 to colorize the Judy Garland show it would be such a treat to see her in color. They should've it in color like bonanza was in1959
Garland instictively coming in and out of comedy and ballad singing during 'At Last' is amazing to behold
She goes to sing it seriously but eases off when Raye starts mugging across her and effortlessly MIXES a completely improvised blend of straight and comedy singing
In contrast to Martha Raye's discomfort at 4:20 when she is thrown off by Judy giving her a taste of her own medicine and has to put on a gritted smile and reluctantly play it for laughs the way she made Garland do with At Last
At the start of her number Raye clearly intended to sing it straight & show off her voice and the irritation with Garland spoiling her showcase moment is definitely there under the mugging
This just cracks me up, its brilliant. Judy has a hard time keeping up with Martha, but does so with flying colors. And Judy could be difficult on the set, I've read the book, but if she liked the guest, she just shone. By this time Judy was supposedly all washed up, but when she had a good day, she was beyond compare. Martha did an hilarious dance number also. She entertained the troops during WW2 longer than anyone, second only to Marlene Dietrich. Thanks for posting.
Martha's "mugging" was priceless - she was an incredibly talented commedian/singer. Not a very common combination of talents! Judy and Martha were both very fun people, who enjoyed each other's zaniness, and socialized quite a bit during the years they each lived and worked in Hollywood.
Love it. This was actually a filmed rehearsal and Judy decided to use it on the show since Martha Raye was so outrageous. The two ladies were friends for life, even though Raye's second husband, composer David Rose, left her for Garland, who then left HIM for Vincente Minelli. You can see how much these two enjoy singing together and people forget what an awesome singer Raye was.
This is a great example of when television was highly entertaining. It takes a lot of talent to keep your composure when clowning around like these two legends did, and still pull it off so well. The younger generation doesn't realize what good television or entertainment is these days.

Definitely one of my favorites.
Everything Judy does is charming and her laugh is contagious. Martha's voice is amazing also. Wish we still did things like they did back in the day.

This show with Martha Raye is one of my favorite episodes from her show. They were great together, and this medley is the best.

which hubby did they share?

David Rose I believe. What's funny is Judy's show was put in a time slot that rivaled Bonanza which David Rose composed the music for.

best part:
Judy: " I found a thrill to press my cheek to."
Martha: "Kiss me."
Judy: "A thrill I've never known."
