I've been looking for this a long time, it's a shame that they don't show them back to back of Tv...Oh but they'll do that for Starwars/trek/Terminator/Rambo/Rocky every year :P
JAY ROBINSON is one of the ALL TIME GREAT BAD GUYS in the movies. Unforunately he got type cast for playing crazy people and never really got the recognition he should have.
@TriforceMinistries3 Not kidding man, if this movie were made today it would clean out the Academe's Oscar trophy shelf. The passion of the actors and the spectacular color, totally blows the audience away. Thanks for posting, Durwin
They should splice all the scenes from The Robe and Demetrius/Gladiators that just have JAY ROBINSON in them, it'd be a helluva movie. Robinson is all I remember from both of them as a kid.
@Blahblobify So did I, but my favorite chracter (besides Victor Mature) was William Marshall, and, at the time, I'd never seen a black person (I was 7).
2 heartrending scenes. Where Demetrius remembers Calvary and returns to his faith and his first love. And where Messalina gazes longingly after him as he departs her and her husband at the end.. Maybe the closest she will ever come to real compassion.
Messalina’s biography at Wikipedia. Very sordid. She was known for her cruelty and debauchery. She had all-night orgies. When she became empress, she prevailed on her husband to execute or exile anyone more popular than her. She was herself for executed for plotting against her husband. Both Claudius and Caligula were her 2nd cousins. She was Claudius’ 3rd wife. Lotta that stuff going on among the patricians in Imperial post-Republic Rome.
Interesting thing with Caligula’s affectation for wearing military garb. It took me several decades to pick up on. He was born Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, son of Germanicus, a popular general. When he was a kid, he strutted around camp in child-sized officer’s garb. His nickname came from the caliga, the boots. He grew up a spoilt brat. Hence his garb in the movie.
Interesting notes on Jay Robinson at his Internet Movie Data Base bio. “ a pair of the narrowest, cruelest-looking eyes in 1950s Hollywood. To compliment them was an evil-looking sneer, crisp and biting diction and a nefarious-sounding cackle. These were all draped upon a lean, bony physique that could slither about menacingly like a ready-to-pounce cobra.”
33:40 A slight movie inconsistency. In “The Robe”, Caligula knew Demetrius by sight as Marcellus’ slave. He presided over Demetrius’ torture. Perhaps it can be said that it is beneath the noble Caesar’s dignity to be bothered with something so trivial as remembering every insignificant slave who has been tortured at the imperial whim.
Yes since Caligula considered himself a god, little wonder he does not bother to remember Demetrius and even Marcellus. A god should not bother himself with such trivial issues of mere mortals as you know. And "Those who the gods want to destroy, they first make mad" as we see here.
wow. loved this flick as a kid. looking back, the arena scenes are kinda hokey. but the music is absolutely epic. About Jay Robinson, the actor who played Caligula: he lost all his wealth to drug addiction. And just after he got clean, he was sent to prison for an old charge of possession. But he became a born again Christian in the 1970's. He was in the movie "Born Again" as David Shapiro, Charles Colson's lawyer
One of the All Time Classics,Don't make them like this any more i wonder how much it
Cost to make back then. Thanks for posting

1:14 Oh, that marvelous segue into the movie theme. It gives me goose bumps. Same with the
Gloria theme at the conclusion. 1:36:41
What can I say? I love this flick. I’m a total inspirational movie geek. Thank you for allowing me to submit the zillions of comments. Bless you.

@hatepbj94 I woundn't go as far to say better, but I do believe as a sequel to The Robe it does it Great Justice.
Because it's 2 different stories interlocked to the Greatest Story Ever Told, Jesus Christ.
