Funny tidbit I found out, South Korea, while not having a large active army, has a reserve of 8 million. Any attempt at invasion from the north will be equally swamped.
I'm surprised the DPRK government didn't commission (or force) people to drive around aimlessly in state sponsored cars for the sake of the foreigners. "Oh look! we have traffic because our country is thriving with technological commerce!".
Seems like the kind of country that will do that.
LOL at 7:06. That's about as close as pulling a tiger's tail as you can get. Whistling the marching tune out of Bridge over the River Kwai in North Korea.

Notice how when they're indoors, there's almost no electric lights. Can't they dam up a river or something? Wait...you have to have money and resources to do that. Sorry...
@vilhelminaali You posted that comment on an American website, on the American internet, probably using an American-brand computer, while wearing jeans, a baseball cap, and saving money for a Ford... Yeah. Fuck the American culture...
@monkeetime I am posting mine on an American website, on the American internet, using a German computer (Medion is German) while wearing jeans, a shirt that says "Made in China" and I am quite happy with the Dutch Railways with it's French-made trains. ;)
Very interesting videos, thanks. But I think your attitude towards the ordinary citizens is a bit... disrespectful. No matter how messed up their country is, it's still their own country. Let them believe whatever they believe is right. It's still part of their culture, messed up or not. Their attitudes towards visitors surely won't get better if we treat them all like fools. They're still just ordinary people... living under the rule of a few insane people. As you know.
@karri2 Look at it this way: In 1930's, a mid-size European nation was messed up, they had weird beliefs, and some of their people were oppressed by the majority because of these beliefs. Was it bad to criticize them? Make fun of them? When a whole nation embarks on a homicidal/suicidal mission, letting them do what they want to do is not the best idea... There is nothing respectable about the North Korean state religion... Or any religion.
For a regime as xenophobic and nationalistic as the North Korean government, it sure does pull out all the stops and spends a buttload on making tourists comfortable. Hypocrisy much?
I really like the style of your commentary monkeetime and I'm enjoying your documentary so far. My only nit-pick is your video intros' are annoyingly long in comparison to the length of each segment. Good stuff though.
To all of you, who show hostility toward DPRK, around here: you are all blind because you have been obfuscated by the lightening of capitalism propaganda, and I am not surprised with it, whatsoever.
—If you are honest with yourselves, and want to know why I said what I have said above, and why I am laughing at your comments, just go to North Korea (Part 12), and read...
You all have a lot to do to catch-up, and get the power of knowledge!
Don´t worry too much; there are many millions like you!
@monkeetime One American who has every opportunity of living outside of North Korea currently lives in North Korea as a legal resident and has been interviewed, saying he would rather live in North Korea than anywhere else.
You know I've often wondered about the people assigned to work with foreigners in North Korea. On one hand they get to have access to better amenities, better food, and occasionally entertainment. On the other it's only really when the tourists are around though. It's like being perpetually teased with something they can never really have. Deep down they know it, they know those tourists are going to go back home to better lives while they are still stuck there waiting for the next group.
@monkeetime I would consider them important historic land marks. Such recently found nazi land marks in Germany who has very serious laws against endorsing the past Nazi party, the findings are preserved anyways. Why... Because people should learn from history, not destroy it because they don't like it.
@jhkshot I hope that reunification will come so you can do just that. And take a piss on those statues for me as well.. as well as for the rest of the world.
Wow, monkeetime your video's are reall awesome. Going through all this trouble to bring us these video's is really commendable of you. I wish your video's got more views instead of rambling, babbling idiots that fill youtube.
@chowbbkit Because it is a Japanese bus that was imported to NK (because NK is so shitty they cant even make their own bus, despite blabling all over the world about how they will drown the US in a sea of nuclear fire.)
BUT SOMETHING STRANGE IS THAT U KNOW THERE ARE JAPANESE MADE VEHICLES IN CHINA AND THE US AS WELL, BUT THEY R ALL MADE INTO LEFT HAND DRIVE :P BUT THIS IS PROBABBLY COZ THE NKS THEMSELVES DON'T EVEN CARE WHAT VEHICLES THEY GET.. AS LONG AS THEY CAN STILL OPERATE LOL :P AGAIN,, SORRY FOR TYPING IN CAPITALS
