I don't think it makes any sense, any way. The bad thing with all martial arts styles is that they don't seem to have a convincing method to test if what they teach you will work in the real world. I wished I could meet someone from a special forces team to tell me what works and what doesn't.
@miamiresultscoach Why would special forces know? They are trained primarily with weapons and use hand to hand combat as a last resort. It's also not about self-defense, but deadly force like Krav Maga. Once it becomes a martial art, sport or demonstration it is not combat. That is true for every martial art/practice. There is really no way to test self-defense techniques since you are likely to die or face serious injury. Striking and kicking arts are the least practical. Broken bones anyone?
@harrylimewirejr That's ridiculous. You can't blanket all martial arts as 'not combat' simply because you disposed to not seeing their usefulness. Muay Thai, Kyokushin, some kenpo styles, BJJ/JJJ...they all train alive and full contact. They are constantly testing their self-defense aspects. A striking art can be perfectly combat effective if the training is effective. Likewise, grappling and submission arts such as Judo, jujitsu and aikijujitsu can also be combat effective.
If I will base it on my experience, I have tested my striking and judo/jujitsu techniques against aikido practitioners so many times. Aikido is not an effective or practical combat skill but perhaps it is a beautiful martial art. - but this based on my experience.
This competition format could be used to seriously evolve knife defense in an alive setting. You just need to up the badassity - attacker has mma gloves and a shock knife, defender - don't get stabbed. Points the longer you last, big points if you disarm/control. Then you switch.
I'm not sure if you still think that given how old your comment is...but it's called shodokan aikido. It only looks like judo because their opponent know the same things they do. On the street, these guys will look more like Steven Segal/Christian Tisser.
Competition clips tend to show why aikido is so difficult to do properly. I have done competition and it is soooo difficult to try not to use strength. What worries me is that there is no effort NOT to use strength in every competition clip I've seen. Aikido is about feel and awareness - not trying to rip the other guys arm off.
:-) Go train with guys like Robert Mustard Sensei, David Reubens Sensei, Joe Thanbu Sensei, then come back here and tell me aikido doesn't work. These guys are masters and martial artists of the very highest callibre. There IS alot of absolute rubbish aikido out there....but there is some absolutely stunning stuff too. Don't judge an entire martial art by the one dimensional view you get on Youtube - get on the mat with someone good and then make an informed judgement..
What does good aikido look like? This video? This video is just some pretty ugly (read: bad) judo. I don't even need to drop any names there, I'm pretty sure the blue belts from the school in town could tool any of these guys in a matter of seconds, if all they did was grope for that really ineffective wristlock...thing.
This is NOT good aikido! I'm not disagreeing with yr assessment of this clip; what I'm saying is don't judge an entire martial art on the basis of one clip. Sport Aikido is the bastardisation of a martial art - that is all, and has nothing to do with real aikido. Good aikido is effortless and extremely powerful, but I could talk about it til I'm blue in the face. Only way to understand is to get on the mat with any of the guys I mentioned before and then judge for yourself. ......
I don't mind your scepticism (I welcome it) but your arrogance and childish manner are offensive. READ what I said - I can TALK about Aikido til I'm blue in the face and it won't change your opinion. Take yourself and your supposed skills and get on the mat with someone like Robert Mustard - tell him you want to give him your best shot. Then come back here and tell everyone on this post what happened. Don't dismiss something until you have experienced for yourself. - that's how you learn.
You ever seen a steven seagull movie? He use Aikido and I assure you it can be lethal to the right practitioners especially when combined with canadian or american style wrestling.
You read Angry White PJ's right? One of the guys in that said that a great deal of akido is actually strikes and distraction while the rest is technique. I understand Mustard and the rest are from a very hard style of Aikido. I am still skeptical of Aikido's practicality as far as the general public is comcerned. But I would love to see someone try to charge at Mustard sensei lolz
interesting concept. but still, i wont take my chances trying to force an ikkyo on a guy with a knife. Just as easily he could pass the knife to the hand not held in a kote gaeshi and stab me with it
@linbeilinbei16 i agree with you. The bad thing with all martial arts styles is that you never know for sure that what they teach as self defense will work successfully in the real world. I'd love to meet someone from the special forces to hear what they think about this.

Effortless and extremely powerful?
You're living in a fantasy world. Find me a clip, or wake up.

I can dismiss things I've never seen a shred of evidence for.
Scientific Method and whatnot, all positive claims must be proven.
Aikido that's any more effective than what is pictured above is one of them.

Yes, and it's a movie. Are you twelve?
Wrestling is more than effective on its own, and has nothing to gain from aikido.

AGREED! I want to try going to a tourney at least once in my life but I have a problem finding dates for such tournaments in Canada.

Don't forget that this is a sport. Self-defense is totally different. Real knives are not part in competitions.
