It's obvious that our Portuguese teacher is not a native speaker. There is a basic difference between SER and ESTAR in Portuguese (both meaning TO BE in English). "Hoje É um dia lindo" is not the best translation for "Today is a beautiful day." ESTAR is normally used for something temporary, SER is for something more permanent. Today may be a beautiful day, but tomorrow may not. Therefore, in good Portuguese it should be, "Hoje ESTÁ um dia lindo."
