It´s really amazing. I love the sound and the fuckin´ drive. And they must be one of the first bands who used fuzzbox on the lead guitar. One year earlier 1965 it was very few bands who used that equipment. For example check up THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". The guitarsound is clean, raw and honest. I rally love it. And the band (The Zettlers)..........."formidable"!!!
Ah! These guys were around the Chicago suburbs in the 60's. I think my sister brought me a nylon-tipped drum stick their drummer threw out during a concert (I was learning drums at the time), in Glenview or wherever. I lived in Winnetka.
So glad to be from NE Ohio, now in Paris, turning people onto this stuff. Crazy Pages and Plan 9 also Fleshtones did songs about me, I was so honored. xo Lisa Falour cutecatfaith d com
Great 60's psych. I've got a Dunwich comp called "The Best of Dunwich Records Volume 2: If You're Ready!" and wish this was on it. I need to buy the 10" EP but funds are tight. Dang.
@hawkmoon03111951 i was recently reminded of this the gu8itar player w2as a thief but he confronted ted nugent for using this riff injourney to the center
I remember this! Lived around there, then. Had a metal-bodied drumstick from their drummer once -- he threw it into the audience, and my sister caught it, nylon tip. Lobed that drumstick. Used it in my right hand!
All the crap on tv about the 60s is either the swingers or hippies or some unrealistic chearful functional family life. I've heard OF the del-vetts but never experienced the pre "Hippy" movement because I was like barely born. this is the pre punk/glam period to me. The original Glam.. not that 80s hair crap. Most of that was just vanity and noise. If you don't agree with me that's fine.. it's just my opinion. But you can go f*** yourself :D
Oh God ... does anybody remember THE CELLAR, the rock club behind Bill Cook Buick in Arlington Heights, IL, ... where I saw CROW, the Del Vettes, Bubble Puppy, The Ides of March, Butterfield Blues Band, Joe Kelly Blues Band, Howlin' Wolf, Rhinocerous, Aorta ... and others ... with rock DJ Joel Sebastian, and the (rarely-used) full-screen color organ behind the stage?
God, I could name names ... so this is Bill Dunlavey calling .... for a different kind of yearbook.
WOW ! Saw them play @ Maine East,Park Ridge,IL they all drove Corvettes into the Field House parked, ran on stage and Jammed great high school flash back....great music...But then it was CHICAGO!
The Del vets also were known as The pride and Joy . Jim Lauer is my cousin. His Mom Is my moms Sister. They used to rehearse in our living room in Northbrook.
@clubford00 Jim Lauer was my room-mate for a short while during 1970. I am looking for Paul Wade. The last time I saw him he was very depressed and I think I was pretty abusive. I have wanted to apologize ever since.
Any clue as to his where abouts??? All a long time ago. Jim, I and 3 other guys had a big apartment with a PA system stereo. It was over a Dr.s office in Deerfield. Lots of pot and acid, not the greatest atmosphere for Jim I think. I was known as Jeff Walté then.
That photo is from the cover of LIFE magazine - the Del Vetts were on the cover in 1966, for a feature article on the Chicago rock 'n' roll / discotheque scene. A great issue, if you can find it, I recommend it. There is also an ish from '67 with pics of the Velvet Underground. A great, overlooked classic song...
I agree Ox,very menacing, but its a little too polished, well executed ,and catchy to be considered garage punk in my book, although most people would call it that.
But it doesn't strike me some much as a punk song, not even the proto-punk, as they know way too well how to play their instruments to be punk :P Well, actually it's that they have a professional approach to the music and that's certainly not something punk aspired to. I'd say they dabbled somewhat in heavy rock, the sound is truly menacing, not unlike Black Sabbath's. Though this song has no obscure ocultism in it and so wins on impact scale alot more for me :)
beatnicks and mods... notpunk.. in fact ever hear the exploited song about beating up mods... definately not punk lol when you grow up and learn some more about music and scenes youll know the difference..punk is over rated by kids.. none of the bands are even credible anymore.. only good bands left are the subhumans everyone else called it quits ..except exploited vice squad and the adicts lol most of the "old" bands still performing dont even have original members lol stoptrying to revise punk
awesome---haven't heard this is eons....been hoping someone has, and would post The Knaves' Leave Me Alone....more mid 60's Chicago garage punk ( I assume they're also from Chicago anyway)....I remember hearing em on the radio there about the same time as The Del-Vetts
Thanks for your help, I totally appreciate it! As a matter of fact, I had gone to our main public library here in what used to be the capital of Flower Power, San Francisco and being the opened minded fun loving being that I have always been picked up on Nuggets 1965-1969 (or some time like that) psychedelic rock and found a whole lot of bands I've never heard of, The Lyrics being one of them. I'm really into verses.
the Del-Vetts "That's the Way It is" is also an all-time classic...
powertrust71 -- the song "Red Sky at Night" is by The Accent (single: Decca F12679). You can find it on the "Chocolate Soup" comp (and probably elsewhere).
a freind ove mine had a shit load ove albums called nuggets..like they where released as volumes..this is where i heard it...im trying to find a song called red sky at night,i think...red sky at night sheperds delight, red in the morning sheperds warning.thats all i know but it was on a nuggets compilation..
The 3 original Dunwich singles are becoming increasingly harder to find but I've found a couple at record shows and stores. However, Sundazed Records released a 10-inch vinyl of all their songs last year which you should be able to find no problem.
This song and band (The musicianship is indeed far beyond most of their then peers) is a sonic and audio gem. A true work of time spectrum genius. The song is 2:42 seconds of musical history.
Wasnt Jimmy Lauer the lead singer for these guys(?) and Jack Burchell was the bass player.... dang thats going back in time.

Yes, Jimmy Lauer was the lead singer. I grew up with Jimmy way back when in Deerfield. I also went to see them play as much as I could - and the place you are talking about was called the Pink Panther. I still have my ID card. I went almost every weekend.
Wow, is Bary Mraz any kin to Jason Mraz the singer? If so then I'd be related to him so just wondering if he is a relative. I'd never heard this song before but it's a good one. Thanks for posting this...
The best band in the north and northwest suburbs of Chicago in 1965-66. The Del-Vetts played at teen night clubs throughout the Chicago area. Their versions of "Still in Love with you Baby" by the Beau Brummels and "I Call Your Name" by the Beatles were better than the originals. This song is inspired by the Yardbirds so it is late in the canon. I'd love to see some of the early stuff that the Del-Vetts played at the New Place in Algonquin. What a great group!
Wow..these cats would have been one of the best garage punk bands of the late 60's..wish I'd been old enough to see them..their fuzz guitar is awesome!! Being from New Zealand we had some very cool garage bands of that era...check out The La De Da's
These guys were the best around. Played every song as good as, or better than the original version. In the "Battle of the Bands" they played against the Shadows of Knight at Loyola University-they both played Gloria (Them-written by Van Morrison) and the Del-Vetts put the Shadows to shame...played it better as judged by the crowd.
