I think he harbored a huge amount of guilt for not being there for Jules, and that he did lavish on Sean more than he might have because of that. It wasn't playing favorites. Yucko purposely isolated him from his first son. She was attention-grabbing to the last degree. John was a wonderful, but messed up man.
