This here is Hayward a great Judo player. He's also very good on the ground. Amazing to see Hayward spar. Hayward is also a long time friend with "Judo" Gene Le Bell. This took place at Los Angeles City College. Same Dojo that I train in.
I'm pretty sure that's not Rickson, but I think it says something about his abilities that now merely throwing him warrants the moment captured on film, posted to YouTube and discussed for eternity.
@redwoodowl That is Rickson Gracie. Back in around 1987, Helio, Rorion, Rickson, Royler and Royce visited Hayward Nishioka’s judo club in Los Angeles. They rolled with Nishioka’s students, and both Rickson and Royler got a chance to roll with Nishioka himself. Rorion did some commentary on the original video.
Here's Dave Camarillo's take on which to learn first - judo or BJJ.
"Judo is the ultimate in martial arts. It is the toughest art I've ever sampled. It builds character, respect, and aggression in its application. I believe it prepares the student for anything."
And this is coming from a high-level black belt in both arts. This is why I got my two kids in judo instead of BJJ. Not to mention that judo lessons are MUCH cheaper. If they choose to, they can learn BJJ later on.
@noformstyle yup! BJJ is so limited. So one dimentional. It's not a practical martial art. It looks good in the UFC though. But imagine a judoka slamming someone on the concrete which is where real fights take place. It'll be game over.
all of the sudden GJJ doesn't have throws?? we have everything judo has...our focus points and execution are different..we can slam you into the concrete too we dont just act like the fight is over after its done, yeah going into the ground like that hurts, but landing properly eliminates alot of the initial damage thats why we dont spend the whole day focusing on throwing people but its taught none the less,we just feel we can end the fight reassuringly with a ground focus..GJJ Forever Much Love
@TheThetruthiz False. Gjj and Bjj dont have all the throws of Judo. But they do share the same self defence throws in my opinion. Alot of Judo throws expose the thowers back too much to be viable in a Bjj or Gjj world, Competition or otherwise. other then that the rules/philosphy are different between the two. I would always recomend grappling styles for self defence. They seem to work wonders.
Deep Voice Commentary: "This Judo player wanted to to test his skills against a Jiu-Jitsu representative. My brother Rickson accepted the challenge but..."
To properly finish someone in the streets, it takes more effort to learn judo than to learn bjj. At least, that's how i feel. I train both, but i do judo a lot longer.
@918Anon hey thats true but everything starts standing up thats why every bjj that plays with the gi needed a strong base wonder why rickson trained wrestling judo and sambo so if your not a ninja i won't get choked
Groundgame this groundgame that....get real! Admit that you are training purely for competition & stop referring to BJJ as the best martial art!!! Judo - BJJ = SPORT COMPETITION get it into ur heads!!
Why doesn't no one bring up the fact that Nishioka Sensei was also retired for awhile when this happen. So what he got tapped, by a great fighter, yet Nishioka was able to toss him like a rag doll very easily. Don't let the gracie hype fool you.
@huevoloc Yes sir, great point. These are two guys who were legendary in their respective fields and it's too bad the people on here who have never trained or competed have to bad mouth them. Nishioka was better at throws and Rickson was better on the mat, simple as that.
Reading some of these comments is like watching a really old Kung-Fu movie. "Iron Palm beats Double Dragon...no, no, you are wrong, you must die!" Judo and BJJ complement each other really well and both skill sets (throwing and grappling) are important. All you need to know is that some of the best BJJ players such as Royler Gracie, Saulo Ribiero, Jacare, etc. are also Judo Black Belts and the Japanese National Judo team goes and trains newaza in Brazil to hone their groundwork.
@Icepacalapse Rickson only does basic moves and being submitted from one of his cross chokes just shows how good he is at it. Today, one of the most dominant BJJ competitors is Roger Gracie who submits everybody with the basic cross choke, even against elite opponents.
to not develop your takedowns and transitioning skills is silly and incomplete for a bjj martial artist as is a judoka not working on his transitioning skills and ground positioning .
Those who continue to say this style is better than that style really show their lack of experience. Every style will have advantages in given situations. Those who really know fight the man, not the style!
I left it all, got bored with the whole, humans have continually gotta be training to fight the invisible man, pure base fear. It's basically the result of being an unevolved species. I put the energy into studying the universe, and planets who host class one civilisations, a million years ahead of us apemen
Ive met judokas who are world-class ground fighters, and then i've met ones who're relay lacking in their ground game. Its just a lot more variable than BJJ.
The same goes for BJJrs' standing game - you'll find world class take down artists along with those who just roll back and spread their legs.
I started with BJJ a long time ago but now im all about judo. why just roll when you can roll and throw too?
gracies are weak they all just live in the gym afraid to fight they always get beat by mua tai experts besides with rules bjj is good is it better then judo or jiu jitsu is as good bjj alone is no good i have seen bjj fighters get beat by mma in real life in the streets bjj you would have to be stupid to used it rather use judo never on the ground
@luizinho81 The Gracies are afraid to fight? That's all they do. Street fights, MMA fights, gym challenges, etc.
BJJ alone works exceptionally well against the untrained. Against the trained, it still works very well, but you need to have very high level jiu jitsu.
Look at guys like Demian Maia, Jacare, Roger Gracie. Dominating in MMA with nothing other than BJJ.
@luizinho81 Look up Rickson's accomplishments. And then maybe next time you'll think before you open your cockhole and reveal to us all just what a pile of monkey foreskin you are.
if you're an expert at newaza in judo than you can take on any bjj player...the gracies took more emphasis on newaza style fighting and called it brazilian jiu jitsu...it's nothing new....
@tenderoni0709 Gracie Jiu Jitsu is modified over and over and over just to make it more modern and effective than any martial art. Helio(before his death) would study moves and positions and take in effect, what needs to be changed and how to change it to make that position dominant for the Jiu Jitsu fighter. Gracie Jiu Jitsu vs Japanese Jiu Jitsu.... Gracie would kill Japanese any day.
You just reaffirmed my arguement. Wrestlers trained in MMA will dominate. Randy Couture, Rashad evans , and Jake Shields all started wrestling as their primary training when they were less than 10 years old. BJJ was added to their training much later so they could effectively counter BJJ techniques. Machida and GSB started their primary training in karate and added BJJ much later in to once again COUNTER bjj techniques.
Probably because showing the submission leads the audience into a bias perspective. Lol maybe the judo guys are getting sick of all the bjj guys bragging.
@Kranio They are both great arts, I train bjj, but would love to train Judo too. On a mat sure a Judoka will likely eventually loose to a same level bjj practitioner due to their inferior ground game (Generally). But if a bjj-er had a street fight with a judoka, 1 throw to the concrete and chances are the bjj guy won't have a chance to do his thing because he will be out. I've done wrestling/bjj on grass and that really hurts, don't want to imagine getting thrown or playing guard on concrete.
I have studied Judo as my only martial arts my whole life, but I am not currently doing it. Even though ankle/leg locks etc etc are illegal in judo, I would still train and practice these Jui Jitsu submissions regardless, because in a real fight they ARE legal.
I find that Jui Jitsu focusses a lot more on ground grappling and submissions and not so much on throws/takedown where as Judo is the opposite but both still have a little,
@jthetrackr since wen r leg/ankle locks illegal in judo? ive been makin people tap 2 them in the last 5 weeks i even "tried" 1 on my sensie he didnt say anything but yea yr right, better 2 train in everything i only officialy train in judo but i practice every kinda submission, throw, strike n i wanta learn pressure points
I don't want to sound like someone arguing or anything but in IJF it's illegal in competition. Maybe legal to use during Randori? Most clubs serious into competition do not teach these moves because they can't be used in competition anyways where as clubs that advocate street self defence more will teach these moves. Or maybe you just do it and no one says anything cuz they don't know themselves if it's aloud and don't wanna seem like babies for complaining who knows.. =/
@jthetrackr You must be the smart ass around here! so jiu- jitsu is an offspring of judo? haha. let me teach you something about the subject buddy, so you don't embarass yourself next time you try to be the "smart ass": Judo came from Jiu-Jitsu, not the contrary. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came from Judo. Try study a little about martial arts, then you post, my friend.
Uh, that's what I said. Jui Jitsu is Japanese originally because it came from Judo. Judo came JUJUTSU, which isn't the same as modern BJJ or JJJ. So, Jui Jitsu is the offspring of Judo, and Judo is the offspring of JuJutsu. < which is still japanese
I think you should study martial arts more bud, my father came 7th in the olympics for Canada in Judo and I'm a student of Hiroshi Nakamura. < If you even know who that is hahahaha
@jthetrackr For real, who give a shit about who is Hiroshi Nkamura? haha. And no, thats not what you said, you're try to fix the shit you said, but anyways, who cares. Your father came 7th in the olympics? no problem at all, my master is Rocian Gracie, the son of master Carlos Gracie, the founder of the Gracie legacy, but yet again, who really cares about it, I just fight, yuo may fight to, that's all that matters.
I train in both Bjj and Judo and I love them both equally. But to pretend that a judo black belt has the groundgame of a BJJ black belt is just ludicrous . The same could be said about the standing throws of a BJJ blackbelt vs a Judo black belt. BJJ is honestly the most complete of the grappling arts but it would just be foolish to not have knowledge of wrestling or judo. Even Roger Gracie does Judo
i would say judo if practised as it was meant to be is more complete grappling art than bjj.A competeive judo bb will be very strong at throwing and fairly good on the ground but Ive been to several bjj clubs that never spar standing(many that never spar with strikes either but thats another story)
Dude I'm a blue belt in bjj and and I submit judo black belts in their 2nd and 3rd dan. And that is with a Gi on. With out the Gi a Judo player would be hard pressed to hold his salt against a decent BJJ black belt . I don't know where you train bjj at but if those guys don't know standing takedowns or defense you need to train someplace.
@FireballKid01 A sound wrestler trained in mixed martial arts will always dominate MMA as we see nowadays. The days of BJJ dominance are over. When BJJ first came in it was a novel concept, now everyone knows how to counter bjj fighters, jab, sprawl, jab, sprawl, knee KO, bjj has to adapt to survive
@muaythairaja Takin into account that UFC champs BJJ black belt Lyoto Machida, GSP got his BJJ grade from R.Gracie, Anderdson Silva's a BJJ black belt under Nog, and SF Champ Jake shields (who by the way even GSP has said is the best out there) is a Black belt BJJ fighter as well as Penn, Rashad Evans, Randy Couture etc... to say the days of BJJ dominance are over is.....
@djsilvano You just reaffirmed my arguement.
@muaythairaja Respect. I was a wrestler before getting into BJJ. It actually helped me a lot to gain rank and learn moves quickly. And before Judo I hated the gi because I thought it hindered me and made things slower. I know better now. But I've been so into Judo and BJJ I can't consider myself just a wrestler anymore. I still love it and I always root for those guys. But you have to consider that every Wrestler on UFC has extensive knowledge off submissions. Even Matt Hughes knows bjj .
@FireballKid01 Very well said. I train both too, and enjoy them both equally. I find Judo is for throwing, BJJ is for ground game. My Judo sensei says the same.
@FireballKid01 I consider aBJJ a sub-style of Judo and I consider Judo a sub-style of Japanese JuJutsu. A true Judoka has excellent submissions. The problem with today's Judo players is that most dojos in the states do not practice much newaza (ground grappling) but most if not ALL Judo players in Europe are excellent on the ground ... especially in former USSR because of Sambo influence. It all depends on the instructor.
@pcjudosambo I've noticed that a lot of international teams have very good newaza. I was lucky enough to train with teams from Korea, Russia, Cuba, Japan and Mexico. But even still these guys that have really solid Judo don't have the same feel as a bjj black belt on the ground. Judo ground work is much more aggressive and is force to be reckoned with. But a BJJ black belt just has infinitely more places to go.
@FireballKid01 I think it all depends on the competition you're in. A good judoka with traditional knowledge of newaza would hold his own and probably win in a BJJ competition because you have 3-5 minutes on the ground to look for a submission (or be submitted). In a Judo competition, you have only seconds to lock in a submission, so in nature, Judokas are extremely faster in submissions because they're trained to be like that. BJJ guys are excellent in subs but not in a Judo comp.
@FireballKid01 True that. Despite that Judo is the father of BJJ, BJJ focused mostly on the groundgame while judo stayed on both standup and ground. My personal opinion is like yours. BJJ= Excellent Ground Game. JUDO= Excellent Standup. Together? one badass motherfuckeR!
@FireballKid01 Which one did you start first? And how has the judo helped your BJJ? I have a background in wrestling, then I got into BJJ but the Gi is really throwing me off so Im thinking about learning some Judo
@FireballKid01 I don't agree. Not all black belts are on the same skill level. Some are better at tournaments, teachers, submission experts, defense experts. Brazilian Ju Jitsu might as well be called Brazilian judo, as all the relevant techniques stem from Judo. Triangles, gi chokes, kimura (lol), all came from Judo. BJJ may spend more time on the ground, but there is no stopping a judoka from focusing on the ground aspect of his sport, as earlier explained. Wow I just wrote a fucking novel.
@FireballKid01 Finally someone who gets it. I went against this one judo guy who was a black belt when I was only a blue belt. He threw me to the ground instantly but once on the ground I choked him out in a few minutes.
@TheRiobezerko Well duh! In the street you never want to go the ground. But besides the point, you seem a little butthurt like some jiu-jitsu guy choked you out.
@TheRiobezerko You're a terrible troll. I'm not even getting angry or frustrated. I'm actually laughing right now at your pathetic attempts to get me angry.
@DuykRuyk so the moral is: if my ne-waza is weak and I am fighting a strong BJJ player, when I throw him I drop him on his head, then make him tap like a cheetah getting fucked to the Sharpshooter.
How embarassing for him; he may be banned from Bullshido for life.
@RPenta uh huh.... Anyway most BJJ guys are hard as hell to throw. Don't put all your bets on judo throwing someone, have a back up plan if that doesn't work.
@RPenta duh. BJJ is only really good for one on one cage fights. On the street it's almost useless. But if I just sit down I can ruin the game of almost all judo guys.
@FireballKid01 a good judo practicioner does have excellent ground work. unless the judo school is focused primarily on competition, they will usually spend an equal amount of time on throws/ground work. while i love BJJ as a development of one's skills on the ground, i think the biggest mistake they made was to get rid of all the stand up work.
@FireballKid01 Are you slow or something? How in the WORLD is "b"JJ the most complete grappling art? You DO understand that there is only groundwork in "b"JJ right? And that in traditional kodokan Judo there is both the same groundwork that "b"JJ has AND throws right?
@EricRyanCronin if i may interject: the fundamental difference between bjj and newaza is strategy. newaza wants to be on top typically and comes from a school of offense. bjj doesnt mind being on bottom since there are more attacks but must wait for an experienced player to make a mistake. i see flaws and good things it both strategies. you probably dont want to be on your back against an experienced judo player with a gi on and judo players tend to give up their back which .....
Respond to this video... would be a mistake against an exp bjj player. the early gracies have lost to judo players in vale tudo and vice versa. these 2 arts are hand in hand and i believe cross training would bring these 2 to become a powerful art in one. all due respect.
@EricRyanCronin No I don't understand that there is only groundwork in BJJ? Because that is a 100% incorrect comment. I've been training in BJJ for 14 years and we've trained throws and takedowns(Osoto Gari, Uchi Mata, Seoinage, Kosoto Gari, Baiana etc.), everyday leading into our groundwork. So it seems your the one who doesn'y "understand". Educate yourself before you go calling out other people, or you just make yourself look stupid.
If this kind of fight happened in the street where you fall not in the mat but to pavement the fight the guy is hospitalized and badly injured then you can escape from the mugger
Yeah nobody because he retired in the year 2000 when three Gracies got a beating or a slap in the Butt from Sakuraba. Then got a nice scapegoat just to avoid fighting him. To think that year 1999 Royler is already defeated while he is in the ring side and complaining that the lock is not fully applied.
BESIDES Rickson got only 400 fights RYAN GOT more than 500 as claimed.
Whats the big deal? He got thrown? Not like thats a loss and he probably wants to be on the ground anyways as he can abuse the judo practitioners lack of knowledge of leg submissions...lol I do all the time to my friend in judo...he falls for the heel hook and knee bar every time
Why is everybody so hell bent on seeing that the Gracies get beat or get whooped on? Could it be that all you guy's are jelous of thier success. one way or another they are still a Major part of MA today, no maatter what losses or wins they have, I RESPECT THE FAMILY ALL THE WAY.. No Body is PERFECT ya lames. Stop hatin' and no I do not go to thier Academies unfortunately I don't live there. BUT I am blessed to go to a very good academy in my area and it is well worth my blood sweat and tears!
Agreed.. the hate is ridiculous.. NO ONE has done as much for American Martial Arts as The Gracie Family...most of us would still be living in fantasy world in MArtial arts doing Karats etc and living in all theory.
I've bounced in bars for years, and used BJJ in REAL fights probably over 100 times over the years while bouncing... It's an amazing art...
Yeah man you're absolutely right. I've used it myself not only in competition where it is extremely successful..but in the street also. It's thee most effetive art for fighting. Judo is ok but you just throw the guy, then what? Pin him?!
Haha I love how ALL judo guys think every martial art apart from judo is crap. "Your glass must be empty"
I agree man. There is value in many arts, the problem is you have to wade through a TON of bull**** to find it.. That's what I like about BJJ, boxing, kickboxing etc... If it doesn't work, throw it out. Not a lot of "theory", just solid hard work and progression.. you get your ass handed to you EVERY training session.. you KNOW what works and what doesn't. REAL Judo is the same, but 90% of American Judo is Throw focused and skimps on Newaza, just as wrestling is focused on Takedowns and pins
definitely true. real judo is 100% practical. i think when it became an olympic event it got bogged down in the rules of competition. but a REAL school will teach plenty of newaza
@RobbieH02879 lololol Yeah nevermind Folk style and greco roman wrestling and boxing.. Without bjj americans would be nothings. kid before i even know what jiu jitsu was, and i had never seen a cagefight in my life, i was winning fights alright with a jab cross hook double leg takedown and GNP looong before i could spell jiu jitsu and probably thought muay thai was a traditional oriental food. now i love BJJ with everything i am but get out of here, it didnt single handedly make a diff.
@RobbieH02879 my point is its not like there werent legitimate american martial arts out there that could win street fights. bjj maybe saved most other martial artists, but boxing and wrestling are two of the three biggest disciplines in mma. if anything BJJ NEEDED BOXING AND WRESTLING. there i laid it out barney style for you.
@matwizard I agree with you completely, I have trained boxing for years and wrestled in HS in the 90's. Boxing, BJJ and wrestling are what I tell everyone looking to really defend themselves.
When I say BJJ revolutionized Martial arts, I am referring to what MOST consider Martial Arts.which are the Traditional arts. BJJ opened a LOT of people's eyes during that time period, hell, I was a BB in Hapkido during that time period and kickboxed(early 90's.) and still remember the impact.
All you neophytes are uninformed and biased. I have followed Nishioka from his early days at Seinan Judo Dojo to the Kodokan in Japan, jr. college and even witnessed him fight as a bouncer at a Hollywood Disco in the 70's. He threw the biggest guy in the club who was harassing the girl. Gracie is great but do not downplay the extremely powerful and knowledgeable Nishioka. That belt is no kind of adornment. His dad was a ju jitsu expert. He is a formidable judo and karate man. Johnny Pal
You are absolutely correct. I have had the extreme pleasure having been one of Sensei Nishioka's students in both Shotokan and to a lesser degree in Judo. I can assure you that Sensei is a master in both standup and ground fighting. He is a very calm and centered person who believes in inflicting only the necessary damage to your opponent that will subdue him. In Shotokan we learned practical and deadly attacks, strikes, and deflections. Judo taught us to use these concepts on the ground.
@TP7JZS Hayward is powerful. In visiting his parents' home, his dad had a fighting monkey from Java kept in a large cage in the back yard. The monkey would go crazy when someone visited, screaming and wanting to attack the visitor. Hayward did not live there at the time. However, when he visited, that monkey chilled out, ha, ha. He sensed something very powerful. It was not that Hayward was familiar with the monkey either. Incidentally, his dad had a Hawaiian show that I was part of. Thx!
What is the controversy over Rickson getting thrown? He would end the guys life if it continued after that...or in a real street fight so don't bullshit yourselves about judo defeating Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
I can and have, easily tapped black belts in judo..yes they threw me but once it was on the ground for more than fifteen seconds........
I sure did and still do on a weekly basis! The judo guy is asking me to teach him bjj lol judo is the takedown, the three seconds in mid air when being thrown and once it hits the ground then what? Thats where gracie jj kicks in!
bjj comes from judo you ever heard of kosen judo bjj just extended the ground game there cousins ..ever get slamed by a judo guy with out holdin back now try that on the concrete .. remember all fights start standing up
today's "olimpic" biased Judo is that way... real Judo, the way it was taught before, even to the Gracies, would not allow you to do all the tricks you do to "judo" black belts today... Judo Newaza is great and bjj is Newaza in essence... Pity that most Judo players didn't train newaza more, because the competition...
to bootinthehole: I'm brazilian and I practiced jiu-jitsu for yrs. I play judo for more than 30 yrs. I know the Gracie family. And you are wrong. If you get a well prepared judo player, it would be a very difficult fight against judo players. And I'll tell what: I GUARANTEE that if you play against me, I will NEVER tap to you in fifteen seconds. Even today a lot of jiu-jitsu players tap to me when I'm playing with them. The Gracie jiu-jitsu is to be very respected. But don't underestimate Judo.
Haha ok man. My point was just that judo does not have the same 'finesse' as jiu-jitsu as there are so many more moves/submissions than judo. You are the living proof of my point...you train Jiu-jitsu and would tap most judo guys because you are seeing both sides. I was defending jiu-jitsu because the video seems to be like it is downgrading it the way the title is worded, thats all.
to bootinthehole: Read it again. i don't play jiu-jitsu anymore. And Judo doesn't have the same'"finesse"? Come on, man! As I can see, it looks like you don't know what you're talking about. Judo is one of the most noble martial arts! If you think that Judo doesn't have the "finesse" (whatever), why do you think that Rickson went to train judo? You're saying that, maybe you never played judo and is afraid of been thrown.
if you watch this whole match RICKSON ARMBARS NISHIOKA TWICE right before this throw.& WHEN NISHIOKA COMPLETES THIS LAST THROW he says "ok, im done .attemping to end this match on his last throw. RICKSON ALSO HAD BEEN ROLLING FOR ABOUT40 MIN WHEN RICKSON & NISHIOKA START THEIR MATCH .CONTEXT
CONTEXT indeed. This wasn't a match. It was tachi-waza randori in a Judo dojo. You know what that means? It's take-down/throw sparring. Hayword Nishioka says, "Ok, I'm done" because he got the take-down so he was done.
rickson hasnt been tapped out since he was 18 years old. he was the reigning world jiu jitsu champion in both his weight class and the absolute class for 19 years in a row, only then he retired from the competition
that just shows that nobody is perfect. good fighters, but nobody is perfect. imagine one would be absolutely perfect. no wrong moves, nothing. what a boring life. where is the thrill that you also can loose, if u know from the begining that woldwide nobody ever can become dangerous for you in a tournament? that would be a pathethic life.
rickson actually submitted him in a few seconds after one of the throws,so respect to rickson for that.but, you still gotta say Hayward Nishioka is the man!!cuz he is!!
hahahahah what a stupid guy... you obviously dont know what your talking about.. first of all no such thing as 1/2 ippon its called wazari and yes they are both considered Ippon's... Specially that second throw a perfectly executed uchi mata
Wrong... sorry... but like i said in an earlier comment Rickson came to our JUDO dojo and he was playing under JUDO rules as agreed upon... so sorry to say he did lose... don't get me wrong though I Respect the shit out of the entire Gracie family they are superb fighters and some of the best teachers... but Rickson lost about 5 times and only won twice
This here is Hayward a great Judo player. He's also very good on the ground. Amazing to see Hayward spar. Hayward is also a long time friend with "Judo" Gene Le Bell. This took place at Los Angeles City College. Same Dojo that I train in.

Alot of Judo throws expose the thowers back too much to be viable in a Bjj or Gjj world, Competition or otherwise. other then that the rules/philosphy are different between the two. I would always recomend grappling styles for self defence. They seem to work wonders.

All you need to know is that some of the best BJJ players such as Royler Gracie, Saulo Ribiero, Jacare, etc. are also Judo Black Belts and the Japanese National Judo team goes and trains newaza in Brazil to hone their groundwork.
andrewwa55 11 months ago 2
@andrewwa55 that was a very informed comment, and I did not even know that about the japanese national team either!

Where's the part where Rickson submits him with a basic white belt technique?
Icepacalapse 11 months ago
@Icepacalapse Rickson only does basic moves and being submitted from one of his cross chokes just shows how good he is at it. Today, one of the most dominant BJJ competitors is Roger Gracie who submits everybody with the basic cross choke, even against elite opponents.
andrewwa55 11 months ago
to not develop your takedowns and transitioning skills is silly and incomplete for a bjj martial artist as is a judoka not working on his transitioning skills and ground positioning .

bjj = freestyle newaza
Ive met judokas who are world-class ground fighters, and then i've met ones who're relay lacking in their ground game. Its just a lot more variable than BJJ.
The same goes for BJJrs' standing game - you'll find world class take down artists along with those who just roll back and spread their legs.
I started with BJJ a long time ago but now im all about judo. why just roll when you can roll and throw too?

luizinho81 1 year ago
@luizinho81 The Gracies are afraid to fight? That's all they do. Street fights, MMA fights, gym challenges, etc.
BJJ alone works exceptionally well against the untrained. Against the trained, it still works very well, but you need to have very high level jiu jitsu.
Look at guys like Demian Maia, Jacare, Roger Gracie. Dominating in MMA with nothing other than BJJ.

tenderoni0709 1 year ago

Kranio 2 years ago
@Kranio They are both great arts, I train bjj, but would love to train Judo too. On a mat sure a Judoka will likely eventually loose to a same level bjj practitioner due to their inferior ground game (Generally). But if a bjj-er had a street fight with a judoka, 1 throw to the concrete and chances are the bjj guy won't have a chance to do his thing because he will be out. I've done wrestling/bjj on grass and that really hurts, don't want to imagine getting thrown or playing guard on concrete.
sinhaserpente 2 years ago
^^^^^^ agreed.
I have studied Judo as my only martial arts my whole life, but I am not currently doing it. Even though ankle/leg locks etc etc are illegal in judo, I would still train and practice these Jui Jitsu submissions regardless, because in a real fight they ARE legal.
I find that Jui Jitsu focusses a lot more on ground grappling and submissions and not so much on throws/takedown where as Judo is the opposite but both still have a little,
Both are great martial arts
jthetrackr 1 year ago
@jthetrackr since wen r leg/ankle locks illegal in judo? ive been makin people tap 2 them in the last 5 weeks i even "tried" 1 on my sensie he didnt say anything but yea yr right, better 2 train in everything i only officialy train in judo but i practice every kinda submission, throw, strike n i wanta learn pressure points
PSBnNH 1 year ago
I don't want to sound like someone arguing or anything but in IJF it's illegal in competition. Maybe legal to use during Randori? Most clubs serious into competition do not teach these moves because they can't be used in competition anyways where as clubs that advocate street self defence more will teach these moves. Or maybe you just do it and no one says anything cuz they don't know themselves if it's aloud and don't wanna seem like babies for complaining who knows.. =/

Jui Jitsu is originally japanese anyways, it was formed as an offspring of Judo.
So basically, Brazilian Jui Jitsu wouldn't exist without Judo.
Nice one smart ass

@jthetrackr You must be the smart ass around here! so jiu- jitsu is an offspring of judo? haha. let me teach you something about the subject buddy, so you don't embarass yourself next time you try to be the "smart ass": Judo came from Jiu-Jitsu, not the contrary. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came from Judo. Try study a little about martial arts, then you post, my friend.
Kranio 1 year ago
Uh, that's what I said. Jui Jitsu is Japanese originally because it came from Judo. Judo came JUJUTSU, which isn't the same as modern BJJ or JJJ. So, Jui Jitsu is the offspring of Judo, and Judo is the offspring of JuJutsu. < which is still japanese
I think you should study martial arts more bud, my father came 7th in the olympics for Canada in Judo and I'm a student of Hiroshi Nakamura. < If you even know who that is hahahaha
jthetrackr 1 year ago
@jthetrackr For real, who give a shit about who is Hiroshi Nkamura? haha. And no, thats not what you said, you're try to fix the shit you said, but anyways, who cares. Kranio 1 year ago
FireballKid01 2 years ago 22
Yes...the force is indeed strong with you
DrGreenThumbs1 2 years ago
i would say judo if practised as it was meant to be is more complete grappling art than bjj.A competeive judo bb will be very strong at throwing and fairly good on the ground but Ive been to several bjj clubs that never spar standing(many that never spar with strikes either but thats another story)
billysue2 2 years ago
Dude I'm a blue belt in bjj and and I submit judo black belts in their 2nd and 3rd dan. And that is with a Gi on. With out the Gi a Judo player would be hard pressed to hold his salt against a decent BJJ black belt . I don't know where you train bjj at but if those guys don't know standing takedowns or defense you need to train someplace.
FireballKid01 2 years ago
@FireballKid01 A sound wrestler trained in mixed martial arts will always dominate MMA as we see nowadays. The days of BJJ dominance are over. When BJJ first came in it was a novel concept, now everyone knows how to counter bjj fighters, jab, sprawl, jab, sprawl, knee KO, bjj has to adapt to survive

FireballKid01 1 year ago
@FireballKid01 Very well said. I train both too, and enjoy them both equally. I find Judo is for throwing, BJJ is for ground game. My Judo sensei says the same.
stormypup 1 year ago
@FireballKid01 I consider aBJJ a sub-style of Judo and I consider Judo a sub-style of Japanese JuJutsu. A true Judoka has excellent submissions. The problem with today's Judo players is that most dojos in the states do not practice much newaza (ground grappling) but most if not ALL Judo players in Europe are excellent on the ground ... especially in former USSR because of Sambo influence. It all depends on the instructor.
pcjudosambo 1 year ago
@pcjudosambo I've noticed that a lot of international teams have very good newaza. I was lucky enough to train with teams from Korea, Russia, Cuba, Japan and Mexico. But even still these guys that have really solid Judo don't have the same feel as a bjj black belt on the ground. Judo ground work is much more aggressive and is force to be reckoned with. But a BJJ black belt just has infinitely more places to go.
FireballKid01 1 year ago
@FireballKid01 I think it all depends on the competition you're in. A good judoka with traditional knowledge of newaza would hold his own and probably win in a BJJ competition because you have 3-5 minutes on the ground to look for a submission (or be submitted). In a Judo competition, you have only seconds to lock in a submission, so in nature, Judokas are extremely faster in submissions because they're trained to be like that. BJJ guys are excellent in subs but not in a Judo comp.
pcjudosambo 1 year ago
@FireballKid01 True that. Despite that Judo is the father of BJJ, BJJ focused mostly on the groundgame while judo stayed on both standup and ground. My personal opinion is like yours. BJJ= Excellent Ground Game. JUDO= Excellent Standup. Together? one badass motherfuckeR!

DuykRuyk 6 months ago
@FireballKid01 a good judo practicioner does have excellent ground work. unless the judo school is focused primarily on competition, they will usually spend an equal amount of time on throws/ground work. while i love BJJ as a development of one's skills on the ground, i think the biggest mistake they made was to get rid of all the stand up work.
eamonob84 6 months ago 2
@FireballKid01 Are you slow or something? How in the WORLD is "b"JJ the most complete grappling art? You DO understand that there is only groundwork in "b"JJ right? And that in traditional kodokan Judo there is both the same groundwork that "b"JJ has AND throws right?
EricRyanCronin 6 months ago 2
@EricRyanCronin are you sure on that one? I don't see a Judo match ending up on a choke or some lock like a gogoplata.
nekinhas10 5 months ago
@EricRyanCronin if i may interject: the fundamental difference between bjj and newaza is strategy. newaza wants to be on top typically and comes from a school of offense. bjj doesnt mind being on bottom since there are more attacks but must wait for an experienced player to make a mistake. i see flaws and good things it both strategies. you probably dont want to be on your back against an experienced judo player with a gi on and judo players tend to give up their back which .....
knownpornographer 5 months ago
Respond to this video... would be a mistake against an exp bjj player. the early gracies have lost to judo players in vale tudo and vice versa. these 2 arts are hand in hand and i believe cross training would bring these 2 to become a powerful art in one. all due respect.
knownpornographer 5 months ago 2
@EricRyanCronin No I don't understand that there is only groundwork in BJJ? Because that is a 100% incorrect comment. I agree man. There is value in many arts, the problem is you have to wade through a TON of bull**** to find it.. That's what I like about BJJ, boxing, kickboxing etc...

He sensed something very powerful. It was not that Hayward was familiar with the monkey either. Incidentally, his dad had a Hawaiian show that I was part of. Thx!

The fight that this vid was a short part of...did Hickson count this as another win in his 40000-to-1 record?
Don't hayt i'm jus axin
DancingSpiderman 2 years ago
Throwing someone on the ground doesn't win the fight. Rickson would tap him quick in a mma fight.
Cody1174 2 years ago
On a hard concrete floor, Rickson would have had his skull caved in. END OF FIGHT!!!
chastell 2 years ago
he didnt hit his head on the mat. he wouldnt let him get to that point in the first place in a real fight

Calm down. Beginning Jiu jitsu players always with the aggressive shit. The guys that have done it some time are a little less wound up.

if you watch this whole match RICKSON ARMBARS NISHIOKA TWICE right before this throw.& WHEN NISHIOKA COMPLETES THIS LAST THROW he says "ok, im done .attemping to end this match on his last throw. RICKSON ALSO HAD BEEN ROLLING FOR ABOUT40 MIN WHEN RICKSON & NISHIOKA START THEIR MATCH .CONTEXT
G0G0PLATA 2 years ago
CONTEXT indeed. This wasn't a match. It was tachi-waza randori in a Judo dojo. You know what that means? It's take-down/throw sparring. Hayword Nishioka says, "Ok, I'm done" because he got the take-down so he was done.

rickson hasnt been tapped out since he was 18 years old. he was the reigning world jiu jitsu champion in both his weight class and the absolute class for 19 years in a row, only then he retired from the competition

Nishioka is my Judo Sensei.damn what an honor!

that just shows that nobody is perfect. good fighters, but nobody is perfect. imagine one would be absolutely perfect. no wrong moves, nothing. what a boring life. where is the thrill that you also can loose, if u know from the begining that woldwide nobody ever can become dangerous for you in a tournament? that would be a pathethic life.
decebal01 2 years ago
I disagree; fighting is to master anything that comes your way. I think the greatest beauty is a fight that goes on for one second.
Fupper16 2 years ago
rickson actually submitted him in a few seconds after one of the throws,so respect to rickson for that.but, you still gotta say Hayward Nishioka is the man!!cuz he is!!

Wrong!
It wan't a clean throw and thus would only be worth 1/2 ippon. It takes 1 ippon to win.
Whammer79 2 years ago
hahahahah what a stupid guy... you obviously dont know what your talking about.. first of all no such thing as 1/2 ippon its called wazari and yes they are both considered Ippon's... Specially that second throw a perfectly executed uchi mata
SlugDropsonheads 2 years ago
Check out the other video on youtube and watch Rickson armbar him!
Throws don't mean much- you have to be able to finish.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Wrong... sorry... but like i said in an earlier comment Rickson came to our JUDO dojo and he was playing under JUDO rules as agreed upon... so sorry to say he did lose... don't get me wrong though I Respect the shit out of the entire Gracie family they are superb fighters and some of the best teachers... but Rickson lost about 5 times and only won twice
