  • Considering this was the first time she ever acted...ever, this is excellent. She has come leaps and bounds in the world of acting; just look at the music video of "What's never been done before."

  • she really sounds like cher!

  • Linda Eder has a more naturally beautiful voice, but I say Coleen Sexton brings better life to the character.

  • Linda Eder has such a fantastic voice, but I just think Coleen Sexton is better suited to this role as it needs someone with a fantastic voice but who can also act their socks off!

  • Coleen Sexton has a more moving and hair raising voice and way of singing though!

  • Linda Eder has real and true talent, Colleen Sexton has an amazing voice but it just lacks the rawness of Linda Eder's voice.

  • This woman has so much freedom in her voice. She really makes singing seem easy, which I'm sure many of us know it isn't the case. I just sit in awe of her.

  • So great, added this to my audition collection. :)

  • Ms. Eder can sang her behind off!

  • I feel as I'm watching this is that Lucy (Linda) already knows the ending, I don't feel any emotion or building just a pretty voice. ( the mundane execution of the same task over and over is boring) But it was overall emotionless for me, at least with Coleen she puts her whole heart into it. You can she actually believes what shes singing. It just seems a little blah to me, but simply my opinion.

  • @Kozzi42 she doesnt...its an effect on the video (as in its shot from different angles and combined)

  • What a voice!

  • Linda Eder and Colleen Sexton are great...but my fav Lucy is Scottish singer/performer Sabrina Carter in the 2nd UK Tour of Jekyll & Hyde...

  • Why must there always be a war between Colleen and Linda. They are both amazing and perform the part to the way they thought it should be performed. Linda has a great voice as does Colleen, and they both did amazing jobs with the rold. Can't we leave it at that and not say anything harsh about their singing or acting skills. Please and thank you :)

  • Hey 1997 :) I was born that year... I wish I could see the Broadway show with her or Coleen in it. I love them both.

  • I love Linda's singing more but I'd prefer to Coleen's acting :)

  • Linda Eder is an absolutely amazing singer. I love the way she performs this wonderful song with such emotion and with a voice that is so beautiful and so powerful. She is one of the greats.

  • No one will ever sing Frank Wildhorn's music like Linda Eder. Period.

  • Am I the only person who kind of wished he would have killed his Fiance instead?

  • @JudefckingRambo ...... no I understand....! she sings the song about wanting to start over...and then she dies right after! Devastation! But I love this song so much, that I want to sing it at a cabaret concert!

  • i get chills when linda sings i don't get them with colleen :( sorry

  • Personally, I believe that Linda has the stronger voice. But Colleen brings a certain exuberance to the role and her tone is much purer. When it comes down to it, they're both too perfect to begin to choose a favorite.

  • hard to argue at all when the part was written for Linda by her HUSBAND! Like Christine, in Phantom of the Opera--- it suits Sarah Brightman absolutely perfectly... say whatever you want about the rest of her work!

  • Well, at least she said something before she died.

    *Hyde stab*

  • I swear...it seems most people like Sexton just because shes young... AGEISM! Linda Eder is crazy amazing! I love love love her singing!

  • Wow her voice is AMAZING!

  • Wow! This is awesome! Didn't she also play in Man of La Mancha in 1997?

  • What a voice. That last note is incredible.

  • memories of meeting Linda after J/K in 1997....she signed my playbill

  • amazing!!!!!

  • What a great song a what a voice this lady has. Not many could handle that last note and hold it that long

  • Why have I only just discovered this musical?!?!? So glad it's doing a UK tour!

  • Please come back to Broadway =(

  • Saw her perform this live in New Haven - gave me chills! Never thought anyone could compare with Streisand -just amazing!

  • This was the first Broadway show I ever saw back in 1997...I have see Phantom, Les Mis, Miss Saigon, Wicked and many others....This is by far the best show EVER!!!!

  • I have this on repeat every single day !

  • Where can I find the press reel?

  • Linda owns this song.

  • i'm upset that "Bring on the men" was cut and replaced with "Good N' Evil" because it builds more of Lucy's story unlike "Good N' Evil" which is more of Jekyll's. also bring on the men (in my opinion) is a more interesting song musically.

  • She reminds me of Lara Fabian. her voice and her look.

  • i remember a few years ago there was talking about making this musical into a picture.

anyone knows what happened to that?

  • Por Dios que gran voz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!que respiración increible, afinación, colocación y administración del aire. TECNICA, RELAJACIÓN Y CONCENTRACIÓN DE UNA GRAN ARTISTA

  • Her voice is truly one in a million. It is a shame that she is not a better actor, yes, but her voice has such color and life that it is endlessly forgivable.

  • They don't have a DVD of the obc, do they? I know they have the David Hasselhoff version, since i own it (And i how I love it so), but though Im not a fan of Linda's acting, I would love to have some type of video recording.

  • we saw her performance in 1997 , it was outstanding and from then on J & H became our favorite broadway musical. It was also a pleasure meeting Miss Eder, Robert and Cristine after the show....excellent post !

  • incryabale

  • Want to sing want to sing want to siiiiiiiing!

  • OMG! dude seriously where are you getting this footage? I want it! Id so rather have her on dvd than colleen sexton for sure! Pleeeeaaase let me know! I dnt care if its pirated or not i just freaking want it!!!

  • Bwaaah I want to do this one but I can't find a decent instrumental! Boo. But.. yay! for the song!

  • the only thing i dont like is here vibrato

  • I defiantly like her better than Coleen Sexton. Not saying she doesn't have talent. Cause when she belts that girl can sing! But I just like her voice better.

  • i love both Coleen Sexton and Linda Eder. they both bring a different type of personality to Lucy and both have very different oices so i cant say i like one better. i think they are both amazing :)

  • In the book she is only abou t 14 or 15

  • It's quite amazing to see her transmit that much without even trying too hard. You can tell she's insecure and not convinced of herself as an actress yet integrates all of that into her performance. And out comes magic!

  • an absolutely beautiful vocal from linda eder...as always....i figured it would be a challenge for a male to sing it...here's version of it...comments (constructive) would be most appreciated....thanks....

  • Sad that she dies after singing this. It's such a beautiful song.

  • I love Linda Edner, but she looks a little old to be Lucy. But besides she is perfect!

  • I've always thought of Lucy as being older anyway. Like, she's worn down and at the end of her rope and not so naive anymore. Which is why she's singing this amazing song. And she knows this, which makes it all the more beautiful and tragic. But, you're definitely right. She's perfect!!! :D

  • I agree but i do remember hearing she was working with this show for ten years so mabye in the begining she looked a lot younger cause ten years is a long time

  • I had the privilege of seeing the Pre-Broadway touring company of J & H with Linda Eder and Robert Cuccioli in August of 1995. It was so thrilling to see. She soared on this song so hi, you felt as you would lift out of your seat with her voice. Terrific.

  • the new one with Coleen Sexton is much better (just a opinion)

  • Yeah well no one asked for your opinion here when we're listening to LINDA EDER sing it.

  • @Gabreilthearchangel I STRONGLY disagree (just a opinion)

  • I love this song, but if I were Lucy I would be packing instead of singing. Had she done that she would have lived.

  • haha. i agree.

  • Oh I think Hyde would have found her.... She was his and that was that... The Murder scene...shocking for a musical.

  • Linda is by far the best Lucy, not surprising since this role was written specifically for her.

  • Linda's voice is stunning! I wish I would have been older when she was doing the show! I think Coleen does a pretty awesome job with this song as well.

  • i don't think she is all that amazing but, she does have a nice voice, i just can't feel any emotion. maybe it's me?

  • Linda is Incredible! No body does it better=)

  • Totally agree ^^

  • i love linda's voice but i adore coleens way better

  • who is coleen?

  • Her name is Coleen Sexton and she also played Lucy in a later version of J&H. She is on the DVD release of the show with David Hasselhoff if u want to check it out!

  • When she preformed in Denver, she literally stoppped the show after singing this song. An unforgettable experience!

  • Oh. the things I want to do to Linda Eder sexually because of her voice.

  • She makes it all seem so easy!

  • Unbelievable, she's the greatest vocalist I've ever heard. simply billiant.... totally amazing voice.

  • Linda eder is the best lucy EVER!! no matter what anyone else says!!

  • Linda is the best ever at this role!!!!!

  • honestly, i much prefer linda eder to coleen sexton. however, coleen does play the role very well. i think she brings a real innocence to the role with her younger voice, making it sadder, however i just love Linda Eder :) just my opinion :)

  • @randommusicgal i completely agree.

  • @randommusicgal I liked Coleen better in this role. Not that Linda's not amazing, but Coleen's portrayal of Lucy just makes the musical for me.

  • Comment removed

  • @randommusicgal Though I agree Linda is better, I don't think that Coleen makes it sadder because she is younger. I actually think that Linda makes is sadder, being older and FINALLY getting out of this horrible lifestyle after many, many years. I actually think that's why I like her version so much better, you can see the new hope in her, but not a naive hope, a wise one. I think it makes it all the more special. And then SO devastatingly sad when she is killed.

  • i like them both, in my opinion both actresses bring something, linda brings depth and maturity to the role, colleen brings innocence and undying hope under her hard shell (either way its sad)

  • wow. i was JUST about to type pretty much the same thing, then i scrolled down and saw this. haha

    well, i agree. :]

  • Linda Eder is so much better than Coleen at the role of Lucy Harris. Coleen's voice is to innocent and pitchy. Linda's has depth to it, making you believe that Lucy really has had a struggle in life.

  • @SeeAyArhAyStitchez Yea thats what I always thought too.

  • Coleen's SO much better.

  • amen to that.

  • You can't even compare Linda Eder and the other woman. Can't compare Linda Eder to anyone. She is in a league of her own.

  • amen to that

  • I absolutely love this song-she did an excellent job with it and i don't think it was overdramatic or anything. Linda is an amazing singer and actress

  • I completely agree! I only wish she had been teamed with Andrea Rivette, whose voice is more mature than Christianne Nolls'. I'm going to be singing this for my voice class, as it's my favourite from the show. Linda is SUCH a phenomenal talent!!!!

  • andrea's voice isn't as pure and pretty as christianne's though .-.

  • sorry, forgot to add that thats just my opinion!

  • Linda is the true Lucy. The music for Lucy was written for Linda by her husband, Frank Wildhorn who co- composed Jekyll & Hyde The Musical with Leslie Bricusse. I saw the tour version with Linda Etter in New Orleans before the show went to Broadway and she was magnificant. My daughter, who recently played Lucy in a local production, has idolized Linda since we saw her in New Orleans.

  • hmm i think i like lindas voice better but both linda and coleen had phenomenal (albeit different) performances

  • i don't understand why people need to constantly compare linda and coleen. they both portrayed lucy wonderfully and they both have their strong points. that's why they both got the role at one point. just enjoy the performance, no matter whose it is!

  • @devonfarrell You can't compare the two because they both have equally amazing attributes and give something to the role of Lucy. They are suberb. :)

  • @devonfarrell thank you! i completely agree! :)

  • @devonfarrell I agree.

  • @devonfarrell I would like to second that! If people could just stop and think for a second how boring it would be if everyone did everything exactly the same way. Personality is the key to be successful in this job, apart from the obvious vocal talent you need to be a singer. Both of them are blessed with amazing tools and use them the way the see best.

  • @devonfarrell You do have a point! But Coleen was originally the understudy of Lucy! Still she was wonderfully fantastique in her performance! Coleen did deserve the part either ways!

  • @devonfarrell agree 100 percent!!! i love both!!

  • how on earth she does that in a corset is beyond me.

  • They probably have it a bit loosend for her to sing. =]

  • Are there any videos of Linda speaking in the show..like maybe the one before this one or Lucy's death?

  • pwns coleen sexton

  • I absolutely love that. ♥

  • is there any recording even on VHS that has this cast? because I would love to see this production and I love the soundtrack with this cast but I refuse to watch Hasselhoff and that seems to be all I can find :(

  • *chills*

  • where did you get this? Can you buy it ?

  • Incredible! I love Linda Eder. Her voice always blows me away. Very few singers can belt and have those high overtones. Just listen to the last note, and you'll hear what I'm talking about.

  • I saw the original cast on Broadway, and was blown away. I realize that this is not the best musical ever, but I thought the cast performed the hell out of it. Listening to Linda Eder, I can remember an entire audience stunned by her talent pouring off that stage. A very memorable evening!

  • The Producers destroyed this show from Mr. Wildhorns first concept recording with Anthony Warlow and Linda Eder. If that show would have went up, it would have faired much better then this version did, never having turned a profit.

  • I love the complete recording far better than the obc

  • o.o this version has such a fan following and i'm pretty sure it faired quite nicely financially.

  • This became my fav musical..in '97, I met Miss Eder, Cuccioli and Cristine Knoll after the show.....I still have the pics and autographs...........treasures!

  • this is great! :)

  • linda eder is absolutely astounding.

  • That is one VERY talented woman.

  • I love her sperated vibrato!!!!!!! it comes out as:

    "A new life-fafafafafafafa!"

So awesome! I love betty buckley's vibrato, though, they are very different

  • i love linda eder! i love listening to her voice. i enojoy hearing a voice of an angel. She is my role model. I'm training my voice to be that powerful. And maybe one day my voice will be that powerful.

  • How do you train your voice to be that powerful (not meaning to be snappy, I am actually wondering, can you give me some tips ?? ) :D

  • It takes training and time. On of the most important things is not to overdo it. If you try to sing this way incorrectly you could hurt your vocal cords. Support from your diaphragm. Your shoulders should not move at all when you take a breath. Your soft palate should be up. One thing to help with this is to touch the back of your bottom teeth with your tongue. The best advice I can give you is to find a good voice teacher. That makes all the difference in the world. Hope this helps!

  • i love linda eder! she knows how to sing. Linda Eder is my role model. She is my number one favorite singer of all.

  • Question;

I have looked and looked all over the place for a video that stars Linda Eder, not Coleen Sexton and so on... does anyone have information as to where I could find one? Where did this video come from?

  • This video is from a press reel issued for the original Broadway cast. I don't know of any official release of the full original cast.

  • @Becca101291 my father made it; serino & coyne inc

  • Where did you get this!!!

  • she is phenomenal

  • AMAZING!

  • I love Linda Eder. Coleen's voice gets whiny at times, which gets on my nerves.

I hate how Broadway productions cast people who force their voice and make it whiny. Bring back the classical voices!

  • i luv colen but inda's voice is much more powerful

  • I think Coleen does a very good job and her emotion and acting are very good also, but Linda Eder's voice is far superior, and there is something so unusual but powerful in the way she phrases things. Her duet with Christina "In His Eyes" is worth a listen. Linda's voice is about equal to my favourite woman of theatre Ruthie Henshall, and that is saying something!

  • Coleen perfroms this song better by so unbelievebly better....and notice say PERFORMS.... maybe it has something to do with the fact that this clip of Linda was not infront of a liv audience.... Coleen is amazing.... Linda did not do anything for me emotionally.....

  • then you're headless.

  • But I think they are BOTH good actresses....

    Aren't they??

  • they but linda has such a unique voice!

  • ive got to admit i prefer coleens voice but linda elder is absoloutley nicredible!

    hugs and kisses! :0)

    xxxx

    xxx

  • I agree with you tasmin30natasha, even though Linda has a completely amazing voice (i wish i could belt those notes) and is probably a good actress (i haven't actually seen her act without singing), I think Coleen's version is miles better.

Maybe it's because she's younger and therefore i would understand her portrayal of the character better or maybe because she has a different take on the song. I don't know but her's seems to make me want to cry. I don't get that with Linda's version.

  • i dislike coleens its so hopeful and weird Dx like shes thinking of all her dreams she knows won't come true, and yet shes roaring and jumping around and smiling like a mad woman. linda's is more real i think. when i wish my life was different i don't get all hopeful, i get sad over things that have gone wrong.

  • coleens is like that because she is younger, therefore her lucy is younger, so she would be more hopeful, realizing that although she made many mistakes she's still young enough to start over. Linda's is more like "20 years ago maybe...not now." but she's still hoping.

  • Wow... my vote is def. for Colleen Sexton...

  • It's Coleen (LOL), but my vote is sort of tied. Coleen because at the time that Linda finally got this show to Broadway, she honestly was a little too old :(, but her voice was phenomeanal. Coleen, just because she was so much suited for the part. But I'd have to say this role technically is Linda's so my vote goes to Linda!

  • Her voice is so ridiculously beautiful and rich, I love it. But to me, it feels sounds too seasoned and pure to be a girl in her early-mid twenties dancing for cash. Linda as the better vocalist over Coleen? Definitely.

But to me, Coleen just really acts and embodies the part, plus her voice suits it.

  • It is unfortunate that it took 9 years to get to B'way! Otherwise, handsdown Linda would have been the absolute best no questions! Luckily her voice only got better (and keeps getting better might I add!)

  • I just love Linda...

I'm open to other actresses as Lucy (obviously because I have the video of Coleen uploaded), but Linda really did do it the best.

I also like Kate Shindle from the J&H Concert & Resurrection CD. Sarah Dawn Finer of the Swedish production is good, too.

    I guess in perfence...

    1. Linda Eder

    2. Kate Shindle

    3. Sarah Dawn Finer / Coleen Sexton (tie)

    Thanks for uploading this. :-)

  • I don't understand how you can say Coleen has a better voice but I do think Coleen is a better actress. Both are amazingly talented women. I can't say who I prefer. Coleen really puts her all into her performance and understands Lucy but her voice is a little whiny at times. Linda has that haunting voice and presence but needs to step up the acting a little bit. I miss Jekyll & Hyde!

  • Seeing this live was just amazing. The video can't do her justice.

  • WOW!! Have not seen this video before - Linda Eder is a Goddess!! LUV IT!!

  • she's great but i like coleen better

  • Hear hear!

  • I like this girl, but Coleen is just pure perfection! She is the better actor, and i think i like coleens voice better too! But this girl can surely sing the crap out of this song!

  • While Coleen is an excellent actress and great singer, her voice really can't compare to Linda Eder's. Coleen is a legit belter, but Linda Eder is just chillingly amazing.

  • This "girl" is who the song was written for by her ex-husband Frank Wildhorn so you can bet that she can sing the crap outta this song. Linda Eder has a voice far superior to Coleen Sexton. Eder has a wider range, shes had more training and a better quality to her sound in my opinion. Sexton is a great singer and probably a better actress but she cannot beat Eder when it comes to singing.

  • Perfection! I was so lucky to see this show with the original cast.

  • Have loved this song for years and Linda takes the crown

  • she is perfection, i actually cried only hearing her voice

  • I love Linda's voice, her acting, everything. This is what Broadway should be- not whiny, forced voices that people seem to like now.

  • @Saltiegal OMG SO agree!

  • she's my hero...

  • Linda Eder rocks the world no matter what y'all say! I wish I could sing like that!!!!

  • I have tears in my eyes. Beautiful.

  • Linda's no actor-but an icredible vocal technician. Coleen acts the fuck out of that role and the colour of her voice is more believable. Yay for Coleen.

  • Oh god... I WOULD kill for this full show 0=]

  • I have say, she is very good, but I do prefer Coleen Sexton's portrayal of Lucy!

  • omg she's my idol. i love her voice. amazing
