PhilTortoise, if you can make some time free, please drop a video on how to configure Vim to achieve such results. I downloaded Omnicompletion, and than things get fuzzy to me. Also if you can write an article on your site, please let me know. Cause this is really awsome. Emacs fans really hate you with this video :p
1- don't memorize the basic commands, instead do the the vimtutor 3 to 4 times a week for 2 weeks (15min).
2- go to command mode with ctrl-c or ctrl-[ rather than with the ESC key
3- if you edit code, install the NERDTree plugin
4- when you have a chance, invest some time into learning touch typing and watch your productivity soar. touch typing works the same as tip #1, you do it everyday in small doses (10min) for 3 weeks and the magic happens on its own
I am a complete newbie to using command line text editors, and this was the best tutorial I could have hoped for. Thanks a lot for putting this helpful video up.
Yes I am originally from France though I now live in Canada where my english-speaking library is being occasionaly patched. But the codebase is not that good ;-)
The commands seem a bit of a hassle at first. and the vim learning curve is pretty steep, but once you've got a basic set of commands in clearly and start finding more and more of the functionality you will soon find out tha tyou can be much more productive in vim with a keyboard than in a normal graphical editing-tool.
thank u

Also, @kw1ksh0t, even better, learn both! :D

Is there a difference between vi(default on ubuntu) and vim(obtained with apt-get) ?
SaschaHeylik 1 year ago
@SaschaHeylik
yeah, vim is actually usable!
elem101 1 year ago
@elem101 lol, yes Now I am using vim all the time (For C).
Btw, i wrote a toolkit with which you can easily realize AS/400 (IBM iSeries) style, console based menus.
Interested, anyone? I will release the sources, and maybe post a video demo.
Would be cool if others found it useful, and maybe helped extending it.
I will also be usable in shell scripts and python for those who use c. Message me for Source/Binarys/Tutorial if you don't want to wait for a video.

both work, and I had to choose one for this tutorial. To me it seemed easier to remember because it combines :w and :q

@SeltsamerAttraktor :x? wtf? try ZZ
Clearly there are multiple ways, a tutorial doesn't need to clarify every single option available.
LilSnyperX 9 months ago
@LilSnyperX Yeah and that's why the shortest way is the one that should be mentioned.

hitandyrun 4 years ago
A quicker way to save and quit is ESC to command mode and then shft ZZ.
I find it quicker and easier.
TheYouuTubeRipper 4 years ago
Right, but I was not sure it would work with older versions; and for a tutorial I thought it better to focus on one way to do it.
philtortoise 4 years ago
using :wq teaches two things, :w and :q, using :wq or :wq! is better than ZZ.
