Thanks ever so much, Captain Soul. I have three Rickenbacker 12-strings parked next to the speakers in my retro listening room. I cranked up this track, and the truss rods got so stiff my guitars were playing themselves.
I saw David Crosby live with SS and GN in Chicago the week before Woodstock, and I saw McGuinn at a solo gig about ten years ago. I can't get enough of that 60s 12-string thang.
I saw them at The Action House on L.I. a week or two before the single came out.
They played 8 Miles once in every set (they did 3). There was either a blizzard or Noahish rain that day and very few patrons showed up. About five of us stood alone before the stage and loved the 3 sets. Roger in granny glasses: "We'd like to play our new single, 8 Miles High." Rock On, Roger! Missing Clarence too.
Can never get enough of these backing tracks of the BYRDS---their distinctive sound is so bright and forward---just the thing for the AM back in the day when gas was 27.9c/gal, movies double-feature @ $1.25, V-8, and "safe" sex a laughable concept because there were no diseases that could kill you. And people didn't feel they needed so f*cking MUCH to live a full, satisfying life.
I agree all five Byrds are in top form here. And the highly under-ated Michael Clarke puts on an amazing performance here, I don't there's anybody that could drum better than he did on this track.

Thanks Captain Soul before you I had never heard this true Gem. Nice to hear the instrument talking alone. To me this version rolls forward with ease a little more in a good way. I totally agree with whoever commented on the bass Chris Hillman is the belly of it rolling forward like a boulder over a cliff. Here is one time where every person in this group was in perfect complimentary sychronisity moving towards a timeless and VERY ORIGINAL MASTERPIECE. Does anyone hear the Twiligt Zone part?
I've never heard anything like the lead guitar track on this cut. It's both amazing and unique, unlike the endless shredding that is often heard these days.
ppl always say it's a psychedelic trak, yes, but it think it's more a merge of eastern and western influences-my son loves it-i dedicate this to my lovely cousin who had a band called 8miles high-he's no longer with us, but he is here, somehow...
Those chords at 40/41 sound like inspired Gene Clark to me. I think you can hear on this just how much one of his own songs became a great group effort. A revelation!
When I think about when this was recorded, what had been accomplished by others, I realize just how much creativity went into this. The layers of notes being arraigned like nothing ever before it.
You cant say, "It sounds like", because there is no LIKE!
This sounds more similar to the final release than the RCA session, and more refined - I would guess it's a rehersal during the later Columbia session.
Crosby's guitar is much more prominent. Sounds "edgier" very nice. McGuinns 1st solo almost sounds like a Steely Dan guitar solo. Just Awesome. Can't get enough of that compressed 12 string sound.
Thx for upload and the excelent Sound !

Isn't this really the Wrecking Crew? I know they did the intrumentals on much of their work
tdell1275 4 months ago
@tdell1275 on the byrds first single the wrecking crew played all the music except jim mcguinns 12-string, but after that they never used them again

@CornyPoopDude
You're right. I must have been thinking about the Beach Boys (or many other acts for that matter!).

I think so; the RCA version sounds darker and is slightly slower.

Absolute groundbreaking song - it influenced so much that followed.
