@Nailsdewed Yes, sorta, they both read treble, but if you play the french horn with the trumpet, both on trumpet music, it starts to sound very funky sounding, so I would read out of a french horn book, and I learned out of a trumpet book, so if you use a trumpet book, have LOTS and LOTS of help with the fingering positions.
@radiationboom Go for it, horn is tons of fun, I think you might enjoy it if you patience enough to switch from woodwind to brass. I myself am a brass trying to master all instruments, so I can one day be a music teacher, but I play the horn in class, and I LOVE it.
I remember when Barry Tuckwell was the conductor in Hagerstown, Maryland. I went to a couple of performances there. But I never saw him play the horn; just conduct.
@radiationboom Hello! Without meaning to discourage you -I think it's quite unusual to play both a reed instrument and a brass, because it messes up your aperture a bit and you won't be used to positioning your lips in such a way to get the right pitch, - but by all means try it! Do lots of buzzing exercises (better to have a teacher to demonstrate). Start off with a single F horn (later on you can move onto a double horn). Have fun!
@radiationboom I'm a Bari Sax player aswell, and I just took-up F Horn at the beginning of this year. If you have a good ear and are willing to practice both (you'll want to keep playing your sax so you don't lose your woodwind embouchure feel) you should give your best shot to trying the Horn! It's a truley a wonderful instrument; this last year's been really great as I've been learning how to deal with a brass instrument. Hope you're up for a challenge!
wow..... i am a horn player of about 2 years, i started on clarinet but i decided to go for a challenge. the horn is deffinatly my instrument of choice, but this guy is amazing. his lip trills are the stuff of legends.
Tayluvsday. I played the cello. I sucked. I play the horn. I love it. The cello sounded like a sick cow with laryngitis. How would you explain to an experienced cellist when one cannot master the instrument?
hey i'm the only one in my class with the french horn, and, even though i wanted to play the trumpet, it's definitely one of the more awesome instruments in existence
one useful thing about being a brass or horn player, I was the only one that could make the right sound on a conch shell at the last New Years party :)
Awesome footage of Barry Tuckwell, I was looking all over for a video of him. I want to add this along with my favorites of Dennis Brain and many other hornists who are forever my inspiration.
For a dedicated horn student that's only about 3 years... so in three years someone can play like Tuckwell? Well, that's interesting... good luck with that. Not that Tuckwell is by any means the best, but you certainly can't get there in three years.
Perhaps not, but they are all comparable to Barry Tuckwell in virtuoso. Or at least Dennis Brain and Radovan Vlatkovic, I haven't actually heard a lot of Hermann Baumann
can u just teach me how 2 play
