  • I had a rhodesian ridgeback mixed with a pit for my first dog it was the best

  • die koenige der hunde, einfach nur grandios schoen....

  • man for the size of these dogs they are soooo fast, ours is 5 years old and still catches hares and rabbits and caches the odd possum they love to run loose in open areas we take ours to a friends farm and he loves it !!

  • he locks and jumps exactly like my young rhodasien ridgeback "Chuck".

  • Haha my Rhodesian/Lab mix prances around like that ;D

  • This is a perfect example of why I always say that a Ridgeback is the perfect breed of dog: they can point, track, bay, tree, retrieve (with training) and naturally have excellent guard dog instincts ( I ve actually seen where it is not advised to "train" a Ridgeback to "attack"-they already have this instinctually)

  • @hazor777 Watching this is somewhat "bittersweet" , I laid my Ridgeback of 15 years to rest in Dec09........God he was such a great dog. I miss him terribly.Rest in peace, Rommell......you were the best friend a man could ever hope to have.....

  • i have never seen a dog jump like that

  • No dog can take down a lion, theyre just trained to track em down and keep em bizzy while the hunter has time to take aclean shot and'put the lion down.altough it must be said that these dogs are courageous as well as they are smart and fast..

  • one of my favorite breeds! <3 i would love to see one actually take down a lion :D

  • they won't take them down, they just bay.

  • @bcsROBBERY

you're right, i just checked wikipedia. my akc breed book doesn't say anything about baying, just that they were bred to hunt lions.. sort of misleading :(

  • haha, faunny and very nice:)

  • wow nice dogs but are there any that have the coat like dobermans maby dark brown??

  • @punisher70000000 nope, they may get a little darker than this fella but not more.

  • are R.R hard to manage ? like are they agressive do they shed often, how much excercise do you give your dog asin hours per day or week ?

  • I can only talk about my boss´ dog. She is lovely and wants to play all day. We have a huge backyard at our facilities and we all play with her. But if she thinks it´s not enough yet she is mourning and goes for your butt... ;-) She has a lovely character and is so much fun. She lightens up our office work. But as always, in the wrong hands.....

  • Look up dogs 101 Rhodesian Ridgeback here on youtube. It will tell you all you need to know about the breed.

  • the short clips on here about breeds dont tell you anything usefull. or anything that you didnt already know through the use of your own common sense, i find the distinct lack of knowledge in them generally irritating.

  • No, they are intelligent and very sensitive dogs.

Training? I start the trainig at an age of maybe 4-5month for a time of 3 month. Wonderfull dogs. They remember almost all, like an Elephant :))

She never ruined something inside, no shoes, no kables etc. Its like an switch, when she`s inside she`s calm but when we go out, hehehe, action, fun, fun, fun! RR are the best dogs i ever have.

  • depends, vet and breeders think that the owner should have quite a few years of dog care and handling because this is a large strong breed, so not good for the light hearted or first time dog owners

  • Look at that jump, it thinks it's a cat!

  • Don't worry. One day he'll get one.

    I like it's tail.

  • I've heard of Rhodesian Ridgebacks as being aloof to strangers but they've been pretty social any time I've met them. My Shep/LabX hunts mice the same way.

  • My Ridgey (Frank) takes mice from my two Burmese cats after they have caught them. He then proceeds to the back lawn to befriend and play with the mouse.

  • Mamba, my Ridgeback caught a squirrel once. Kinda cool due to trees every 30 ft or so in the yard. He also caught a duck in a Fla. park. I tried to stop him but....when Ridgebacks decide they have found game the hunt is on. Simply amazing dogs.

  • Cool

  • is that you oonsta?

  • Yes,

it is a ridgeback nice dog and great vid

  • i have a ridgeback vid cheack out (destroyernight27) =)

  • i ove it when it jumps!!!!!!!

  • cool..i got a ridgeback cross staffy

  • I got a rodhesien redgeback! I love her! Wonderful dog :D Use to hunt with her!

  • The Lion Hunter !!!!!

  • absolutely gorgeous dog!!

  • looks a game dog, perhaps you should get it out with some dog men, they could get your dog working properly, foxes etc, might make a good bushing dog but it seems to be a stalker and not insane like a spaniel

  • He brings food to the table, don't worry. Those are old videos.

  • morgasm, look for some videos with Rhodesians out with Rangers. Rangers in Arizona use packs of Rhodesians to track mountain lions. They are most certainly stalkers like you say. A pack of 5-6 of these guys are a well oiled machine. Sorta like watching Raptors in Jurassic Park. Don't forget, the main use of these guys was tracking and baying lions in South African colonies.

  • has anyone besides me heard the fact that rodesian ridgebacks were used to hunt lions in africa. i read it in a book called the dog bible and nowone believes me. anyways Rodesian Ridgebacks are awesome dogs!

  • Yeah, I have heard the same thing, I really want to find a video of it though.

  • yes they were bred for it...

  • ridgebacks also called the african lion dog, ignore morons mate, you are right, superstition is what made the ridge, people thought that the dogs with ridges were better hunters, when actually it is some sort of bone problem, anyway they ridges were bred from and the others were killed, it still happens today, but everyone knows that kennel clubs are the downfall of many dogs, english bull terrier, stupid curved head, deerhounds and wolfhounds, too big to work the list isnt endless but is long.

  • The ridge is most certainly not a bone problem. The breed stems from the result of mating domestic dogs brought to South Africa from Europe with wild African dogs like Hyenas that have natural ridges. The result over years of breeding was seeing the ridge trait from wild dogs showing up in the domestic breed.

  • well i spose i am wrong, but thats just what i have read and been told by tv programs etc, im hardly an expert on ridgebacks, i just like hunting with dogs. and there are a few examples of good ridgebacks that i wouldnt mind working with, most i have found to be overweight, this is unfortunate, people seem to think that they arent supposed to have defined muscle lol, but there are a few good examples such as the one in this vid. great fox dogs and some do ok on deer. always lurchers for me tho.

  • overweight RRs? Gosh they must have had terrible owners then. RRs on any decent exercise regime would be guaranteed to be in shape. You'd have to not care for the dog at all for them to end up like that.

  • most dogs of today are overweight if we are honest, I've seen dogs win shows that were overweight. I'm not a fan of fat dogs, it annoys me, the original purpose of the dog has been forgotten, and people want them as companions rather than team members.people don't think of the dog, they think of themselves. but then most people wouldn't know how to go about hunting with their dog, and have no reason to keep it in shape.

  • We have a rodesian ridgeback too,his name is Jack. :D<3

  • I also have a rhodesian, it is a great dog :) And he acts almost the same as the one on the video :) What a pity it's such uncommon to see rhodesian ridgeback in my country (Poland)

  • rhodesian is a dominant dog

  • i have ridge backs. good vid

  • Taste very of Rhodésians! They are very funny! Later it looks at the Nile that I trained! One I hug and congratulations!

  • my ridgeback does the same

  • Beautiful dog, really (he?) is gorgeous. I know someone who has 2 and they are awsome animals. he takes them in the woods a couple of times a week with a friends-the friend goes with their own dog about 10 mins ahead of the guy with the RR's andhangs out under a tree or bush or something-always going to different places, then the RR dude comes into the woods and his dogs find the friend...great excercise and a great way to stimulate the dogs mind to do what hes meant for if you own them as a pet

  • Our dog does that INSIDE the house...

  • This video reminds me of my dead dog (german shorthair) who once tried to catch deer.

I was walking with my dog and suddenly a deer ran down the hill, ran ago me and my dog looked like it was stunned. Than it clinched to ran after the deer. The funny thing was that the deer was bigger than my dog and freaking fast.

  • love the dog..just awesome

  • That's hillarious they do that! My German Shepherd did that when she was younger (she's 10 now). Pouncing! Wolves and coyotes do the same thing. Must be instinct!

My dog actually caught over a couple years, 3 mice and 1 packrat. And yes, she ate them all! Yuk!

  • you just gotta love a well trained, obediant ridgeback. They're really something. Really smart dogs. And the way they move, it's like watching a gaselle, it's so light and well-controlled.

  • Cute pup! Was he hunting mice or imitating them? Adorable!

  • Hunting. :-)

  • @rogersmmr my RR has caught 3 mice in my back yard. Unbelievably fast!

  • @rogersmmr mine does that with frogs

  • SeRiUsOrThOdOx, I have 3 ridgebacks (one was a former showdog). And they can be a major handful! A good idea for feeding (this is what I do) I feed them 2 cups of MMillennia with some water twice a day. We put the water in with the kibble so it doesn't expand in their stomachs. Once at 4-5 am and again at 8-9 pm. Make sure they get lots of excercise and water. They can be very energetic (at any age) so lots of attention. They don't need a lot of grooming, but still some.

  • nice video TY

  • yes yes yes!

  • I miss my Rhodesian=( R.i.p Ockra=(

    Beatiful vid btw.

  • same :(

  • Very Very Nice Dog!!

  • I heard that the dogs born without a ridge are emmune to a sertain type of spinal disease that the ones with the ridge get.

  • Actually, even the ridgeless ridgebacks have been known to have a dermoid sinus.

  • hey all, im getting a 10 week old ridgeback puppy in 6 days. has anyone got some useful advice? thanks.

  • yes train him they are a very stubborn dog just dont let them get away with anything

  • Nabi87, I find that very hard to believe. These dogs don't attack for nothing.

  • Any dog will attack for nothing if it's been raised wrong.

  • @tsaketh are you serious? the hunting is naturally implemeted in their blood.. I'm sure the owners of this dog has correctly raised it to become an independent and good dog.

  • @tsaketh no

  • I got attacked by one this week, I didn't do anything to threaten it either, just went after me, it was horrible.

  • If it was a Rhodesian Ridgeback then it was trying to get you to roughhouse when it attacked. You would have been badly injured if you were ATTACKED-attacked.

  • I love that hop he does at :07! What a beautiful dog!!

  • haha i love how he prances aroundlol. i have a rhodesian ridgeback and pitbull mix and hes the best dog ever.

  • we have a female rhodesian, and she is the sweetest thing. She will only bark when a stranger comes. Very, very loyal and will respond almost immediately to commands

  • don't get a female! too independent, gets into everything, totally determined, won't give up- mine could open dishwasher where her food was hidden. breeder said males are big dumb and happy- like my male. 2 yrs old- hasn't discovered how to steal off kitchen counter, female learned 1st day! most beautiful, regal dogs, no barking unless necessary. they look at barking dogs with disdain. TOP BREEDER- "CRESTRIDGE", FL. RIDGELESS PUPS 1/2 PRICE, WITH ALL WONDERFUL RR CHARACTERISTICS

  • Our first Ridggie was a girl. Actually a lady, sweet loving and full of fun. Don't step in her back yard though. Protective and smart. So we got her(us)2 ridgie puppies. Both related to her. Her nephew who is mild mannered Eyore type(Forrest Gumpy)and her grand niece (Satins daughter), go figure. She is the first multiple personality I have ever met. 0 to B** in 1 sec. Lost lotsa stuff with her. But when the other dog is in. sweetness. Take your chances. the love you take is...

  • Just like people, personality is individual specific. Pups from the same litter, same sex, can have vastly different personalities (just like human brothers and sisters) and levels of drive. I've had both and they've all been highly trainable and unique individuals.

  • I have 2 Ridgebacks, Jake and Trixy. Litters are 6 months apart with the same father. Their personalities are as different as night and day. I must check out your videos in detail, as you seem to be a talented trainer.

    PS Good looking mouse hunter.

  • Thanks, but it's easy when you have food motivated dogs (aren't all ridgebacks food motivated?).

• What a big goof lol I have two of them A big male and a smaller female there both a couple of clowns. The male is huge but he is nothing but a big baby.

  • i want one NOW!

  • rr can cost much because they are a rare breed btw rr were breded with greatdane blood hound and i think mastif but ya rr cost alot we got ares for 689 bucks any ways he was not a pure bred and we recently brought him hunting and boy did he do good

  • I just discovered the breed, and to my surprise, its almost everything I've weanted in a dog - especially the fact that it doesnt bark UNLESS there IS a problem.. Its just a big bigger then I want, but I believe the advantages far outweigh that lone characteristic.. Have 4 acres on property & live in a small home. Can someone quote me a typical cost for a quality R.R. pup in the USA?

  • Truly the best family dog ever! My wife and I have had some great RR over the years. They are great around infants and kids. Love 'em. We currently have one female.

  • What a goof. I love it. I have a R.R. and he always makes me laugh.

  • Have a Ridgeback2 --- nice video :D

  • man they are great dogs, when i was a kid i had one, he would chase squirels up trees (really climb the trees) and he would find mice all over the place it was so funny to watch, i loved that dog, he went with me everywhere, poor pup got hit buy a car and died when he was 10 years old, but thats kind of a long life for a big dog like that

  • Did you know that "car hit" is statistically first cause of death in Ridgebacks older than 6 months?

  • When I had my 3 rr they were inside dogs, but when they were out back in the yard, they would escape once in a while and one of my males was hit by a van, it broke his bottom jaw, but the vet fixed it and he was tough as new.

I really miss my doggys, I cried for weeks after the last one was put to sleep, he was 12.

I dont think I can swallow getting another, But I am thinking about it, I love the RR.

  • loved it

  • ive got a new RR mix Chihuahua its sooo cute and i got a RR female i love these dogs

  • Ridgeback and Chihuahua? I'd have liked to see THAT mating...!??

  • lmao

  • Nice video, I've added it to our forum

  • After scouring Dog Rescues I have found a RR, would I be crazy to adopt him? Any opinions appreciated!

Would much rather adopt an unwanted dog if I can.

  • Yes i think you should. They are great, I have one and it gets along fine with my kitten, and other dog. She is adorable and gentle as all hell. Although they can be trained to be guard dogs they aren't scary... unless you fire them up :D.

  • They can be some work because of there size but if you don't mind a big dog then yes because they can be a great addition to any family and can be gentle giants indeed.

  • We adopted a ridgeless RR from the pound - she's the best dog ever. Tons of energy when she's outside but inside she's a lazy lump. loves to be near you all the time and loves people (gets along fine with our cat too)

  • nice dog

  • Pretty dog!

  • I have a Ridge back too!1 His name is Draco, he's 7years old, and luvs to hunt smallwood land critters too. He's very energetic and truely brings the meaning to life: "Mans best friend" BTW/ very nice dog, looks just like draco!! lol thanx for the vid!!!

  • we are having a ridgeback puppy in april :D:D:D:D

  • we have 1 too

    im from holland :P

  • how many people have a rhodesian ridgeback i think we're a little group

  • A very small group depending on what country you are from. Back when we had ours there were only a few in Victoria (Australia). Now there are more, but not many people know about them. Fine by me! It means fewer chances for idiots to own them and give them a bad name due to miss handling and poor training. I am getting hitched next year, the bride and I are getting two dogs...a German Shepard and a ridgy :D I cant wait.

  • this is the first time i've seen a ridge in an open field! I'm surprised how it leapt! But I can't imagine how it'll take off running! I would love to have one for my own one day!

    Thanks for the video!

  • Poor guy. Bred to hunt lions, reduced to hunting mice. That's ok, my ridgeback "stalks" crawling babies at the beach.

  • Actually, his main prey today are deers.

  • You sire have a might fine dog there :) Hat off to ya sir.

  • Thanks!

  • ye awe have one these theyre really pretty

  • these are really pretty ...

  • i have this dog

  • he should be hunting wild boar or rabbit with a couple of helpers instead of puny little mice. but at least he having fun.

  • Could be Meeces LOL. Great dog.

  • the dog is verry funny
