I don't don't know....this is many years after the recording - and the band's heyday - and I think he sounds just fine, whether it was his song vocal to begin with or not !
I have read all these remarks...my opinion is...i Like the squeeze...they all had good voices.....But Paul Carracks voice is Classic....sang with a group called Ace...sang classic hit....HOW LONG....also...One of the greatest songs of the 90s....He sang The Living years with Mike and the Mechanics.....Paul Carrack....Paul Rodgers from Bad Company....Freddie Mercury....These guys will go down in History as some of the best that ever sang A Song...again...just my opinion...I know there are others.
I'm hearing all kinds of stories here, but from what I understand myself is that Carrack wrote the song and Squeeze sang it. Now Carrack sings it. Not sure though.
Nah, it's as pretty much every squeeze song is - Difford and Tilbrook. Pretty sure Costello thought Carracks voice was very soulful and would be great for this song which is why he sung it!
I was at this gig and well worth the drive from Hampshire to East London. Anyway the lyrics are written by Chris Difford about going on tour. The beginning is about the things he's preparing, then moves onto the "temptations" of touring. Finally it moves onto the coming home and the guilt. A very personal song. Chris really bares his soul. If you are a divorced/separated father, try "To be a dad" and see if you don't cry!
Squeeze was pretty far from a one-hit wonder. "Everything In The World," "Pulling Mussels From A Shell," "Hourglass" (a huge MTV video hit) and "Another Nail In My heart" is a short list of their other hits.
i have been a squeee fan since 77.can we confirm most prolific top30 uk artist since lennon/mcartney and the most original since the fantastic ray davies
even though i dident go 2 america to c the us tour i did get to c most of the venues my dad ( bassist john bentley)skyped me before most gigs so we could c the stage!!
To this day...Glenn regrets not singing the original. Glenn is a great down to earth guy, with zero "rock star" ego, but he has always maintained that him not singing lead on the original stopped him from being a household name in the USA. I happen to agree.
I love Squeeze, but I'm not sure how someone concerned with being a household name could be described as having zero rock star ego. Glenn's is one of my favorite voices in pop music, but Paul's vocal on the original is what put the song over the top.
Continued...when their producer 1st heard the song, he knew it would be a smash hit, but he suggested keyboardist Paul Carrick step in and sing it, and add organ. Tillbrook wasn't real happy (see his expression in the video), but agreed Paul sang it well. Carrick was in the band a very short time.... when Tillbrook said I he leaves...or I do.
Actually...Paul Carrick sang lead vocals on the original, although Glenn Tillbrook & Chris Difford both sing on the original(middle part). Chris Difford (short dark hard guy) wrote the lyrics on the back of napkin when riding in a taxi from JFK airport to his hotel room, and Glenn Tillbrook (tall blond singing) wrote the music after Chris handed him the lyrics.
who is the singer playing the guitar on this video? is he the vocals which plays the keyboards on the original version of the "tempted" video? need some answer, thanks! (sorry, i dont know much about squeeze but i definitely love their music)
Do you think you could turn embed on, then add this to chann3lz.. It's a completely random jukebox site I'm working on.. I just saw the Glen Tilbrook DVD on netflix, pretty cool guy..
How brilliant to see the return of Squeeze. I hope that this goes beyond just the 'best of' CD and the reunion tour. Music needs the talents of Squeeze.

Not bad but If Paul Carrack sings a song first, you're done. You will not match that vocal, ever.

Although I miss the original Carrack stuff here, he still sounds great...
Amazing voice... : )

@Ptrrrrrrrr It was written by Difford and Tilbrook and sung by Carrack when he was in squeeze.

@Ptrrrrrrrr - Carrack was only briefly in Squeeze, and Tempted, like most Squeeze songs, was absolutely Difford/Tilbrook.

I always thought Difford was the lyricist. If Tilbrook penned these lyrics, he is the most supremely gifted musician of all time.

The producer in question is none other than Elvis Costello (who also provides vocals on the song).
