@emillokemotocross Yeh, "Rubinho" is still driving in F1, actually he has holds that record of most racers driven/participated....but it might be that his 19th season in F1 might be his last, and that he drives his last race in his home GP in Brasil 3 weeks from now. Williams doesnt seem interested to keep Barrichello any longer, he will most likely be replaced either by Kimi Raikkonen (who is most likely returning to F1 after 2 years break) or Adrian Sutil.
It's easy to forget now that Rubens was second in the world championship at this point. He was the only other driver besides Schumacher to finish in the top four and the points in both of the first two races. I think it was the highest a Jordan driver ever sat in the world championship (after more than one race). Obviously that isn't the important issue and it's a miracle that Brazil didn't lose both its greatest driver and its youngest new star that weekend.
@rohgenextfan n Before, happened in Friday's practice session. Ratz died the following day in qualifying, Senna died the next day during the race. A sickening weekend .
I just couldn't believe what I was watching, First Barrichello in this horrific crash, Razenbergers crash coming from nowhere, then my boyhood hero being taken from us. RIP, all taken far too soon.
@Factory051 I remember watching it too and it was just one jaw-dropping event after the another. You just had the feeling that there was more to come after Roland's death. It was relentless, a truly shocking weekend .
He survived this crash, but the Marshals were a bunch of cowboys. They just saw a guy crash at 135+mph and get barrel rolled a couple of times. What they did was just manhandle the car back onto it's wheels and lucky Barrichello was unconscious because no one supported his head or body when car slammed down on it's wheels. They could have killed the idiots.
The telemetry of the car showed that he exited the corner at 139mph, when he should of been doing about 120mph. If was going faster, he would of gone higher, probably through the catch fence, and into the spectators. Hard to think about what could of happened.
Just bare in mind that after THAT weekend, F1 security standards in general (and especially considering racing automobiles) had a dramatic change to the better. In some twisted way, those accidents/deaths contributed the most, considering raising security standards in any aspect : it's gone down to history as the last fatal Grand Prix in F1, up-to-date...
Graças a Deus Rubinho sobreviveu a este gravíssimo acidente. E olhando bem, vemos que a pancada dele foi mais feia do que a que levou o próprio Senna a morte.
And because in until 1994 things were a lot different. Car were safe, not as today of course. But a false sense of security was in the air. Rubens and Roland accidents were taken as coincidences, not as safety issues. Until Ayrton accident changed everything.
I haven't any words...it's so incredible...the whell...the ecu...the only 2 chip that haved stored the information about the crash deleted by williams and renault...i have just one word...rip Ayrton!
yes why didnt they cancelled it after ratzenburger died.. isnt that enough to cancel one grand prix or what? that was the worst weekend in f1 history.. if barrichellos car would have landed different it would be 3dead.. rip ratzenberger and senna and the many others dying in the decades before
you see alot of accidents where cars roll and spin etc, they are bad in themselves, but when the car goes from speed to a standstill in a short space of time damage really gets done! this is a massive accident, the car goes from high speed to 0 in a flash!
Don't forget the really bad accident of Wendlinger (Monaco, coma of 3 weeks) and Lamy (testing, crashed outside the track borders in a spectator tunnel, probably the worst non-fatal accident in F1 ever, comparing to impact and how it could have played out in a race when there WOULD be spectators there.
Also, testing accidents of Jean Alesi en Lehto (Why Verstappen drove the first 2 races and Larini drove 2 races)
@OnePieceSanjiRobin the worst non-fatal accident I would consider Donelly´s accident in Jerez 1990 (broken legs, ribs, collar bone, fractured skull and bruised lungs) or Purley´s accident in Silverstone 1977 (highest G force ever up to 2003 - 29 fractures, his heart stopped six times)..
@Shadowhawk25 you forgot the other heavy crashes: Wendlinger (bad head injury), Montermini (broken ankle), Lamy (broken legs and wrist) plus heavy pre season accidents of Alesi and Lehto..broken leg of a track marshall in Suzuka, Verstappen´s pit fire in Hockenheim..etc.
The thing about Imola is it's turns. The track itself isn't very fast on average, but there's alot of very high speed curves. If you have a tire/wing/whatever failure you're going straight into the wall.
Really fucking great by the italian marshalls, they have tire walls there but nowhere else on the track, if they had more tire walls then maybe Roland Ratzenberger or Senna might have lived that weekend. That is the worst track for safety in the world.
