They are not the same, X-Guard is both butterflies controlling one leg, and butterfly guard is controlling both legs, each one with one of yours.. Kind of like having your hooks in when your in back mount, except your facing him and your hooking your ankles in his inner thighs..
It is nicely done technique..but most people squeeze knees together and cross ankles when lifted up in butterfly now so the avoid many of these techniques...respectfully.
Yep, its the leg he swings over to enact the knee bar, just tried it out defending it and man does that leg swinging over lead to a number of just sick toe holds, I wouldn't use it but I am glad someone else might use it on me, makes my job all that easier.
It looks nice but dude is the guy pulling guard open to a ton of toe holds and leg locks himself, if he hit this on someone who actually knew what he was doing the guard would be toast.
the left hook is still in pushing the opponents left inner thigh, his right leg is off the ground, very impropable to sink any toe/leg lock while so dramatically off balance. the leg must come through quickly, Marcello Garcia throws a figure 4 to finish. check it out, its sick.
Improbable??? I roll with a 13 year and black belt sudent of Rigan Macado who loves the X-gaurd. I sink toe holds on him all the time, infact he has modified his x guard to try and avoid that. Even he admits that BJJ is not caught up with the legs and toe holds and is open to them. At least he admits that and looks to evolve accordingly.
i said Improbable as in not Impossible. If done explosively it can be successfully used. But like just about everything in BJJ there are infinite variables. I will look for the toe holds. thx for the tip!
Really good idea, seems like you´re pretty thoughtful on your moves. Also thanks for sharing. And by the way, please check out my video and tell me your thoughts on it.
great set-up but low percentage against high level players who will see it coming a mile away. This is all day against beginners.

@Dojocho If you pinch your knees together, you kill your ability to post out and become wide open to knee push sweeps. Wheels within wheels.

Yeah, that was in Tapout magazine and I immediately loved it. I never hit it, however, because I never roll anymore; just strike.
