She really have a beautiful voice ! she's one of the best mezzo all over the world ! and she's a magic personn and my favorite star !!!! Fan from Paris !
I was blown away when I first heard Denyce sing this song. I absolutely love the version of Vavilov's (mistakenly known as Caccini's) Ave Maria; and Denyce brought it alive for me. I also agree with the comment about Lys Agnes...WOW! Denyce! I hope you don't ever pay attention to the raunchy comments that have been made. I don't think they understand what a truly magnificent voice you have. Thank you for being there for all of us!
Wow what a vocal range she has! I just heard Lys Agnes sing a small part of it search her name here. I assure you Lys will soon be on her way to stardom.
@midnightrose414 For me, it's the same if she's black, white or red haired. The version is horrible. Vladimir Vavilov (the real composer of this beautiful song) would agree with me.
when ever I here this song it make me get the tingles. When I here songs like this one i wish that i had a mezzo-sopranos rang. But lass i am a baritone- tenor vocal rang.
She is very beautiful however, I would have to say that she is no Leontyne Price. No offense- her voice is beautifully trained, but that residual timber of Price's is not there.
Omg This made me cry! soooo beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!! the most beautiful thing i have ever heard. Im a mezzo too. Where can I find the score for this?!!!! Please someone tell me before I explode.
A true contralto of the finest sort. This is a very rare voice seldom found among opera singers. She must be appreciated in her own right without unnecessary comparisons with her to sopranos. She is NOT a soprano, yet she has the talent, and ability to soar to the soprano register with ease. Her voice and singing is majestic, dignified, and exquisite. So making comparisons with any of the great sopranos that have also sung this most beautiful and classic aria is to compare apples with oranges.
@carotamia Caccini did not write this....do your homework. A popular misunderstanding is one thing ....but inexcusable if you are going to criticize. p s I do agree the harmonic sequence is rather twee.
Caccini must have had a bad dream when he wrote this piece. A stupid scale of boring tonal sequences - sounds like a clip from a 3rd rate off Broadway musical.
What a great instrument though - Denyce Graves - and a gorgeous lady as well.
Denyce Graves is wonderful- and I love deep low voices on women- Marian Anderson was able to go really low on Schubert`s Der Tod und das Mädchen, but here beautiful Denyce Graves reaches to the lowest notes I`ve heard in that voice quality with any female opera singer.
@elm268 A mezzo-soprano (meaning "medium" or "middle" "soprano" in Italian) is a type of classical female singing voice whose range lies between the soprano and the contralto singing voices, usually extending from the A below middle C to the A two octaves above (i.e. A3-A5 in scientific pitch notation, where middle C = C4). In the lower and upper extremes, some mezzo-sopranos may extend down to the G below middle C (G3) and as high as "high C" (C6)
@leamorena89 i understand the meaning of mezzo-soprano, thank you. I'm a mezzo. I've already taken my pedagogy class in school, I don't need a text book definition of something I know very well without your help. She sounds like an alto to me. And yes, I know the definition of an alto. Thanks.

@diamondmoney007 Keep telling yourself that Idiot! She is probably losing sleep over you hating on her on youtube because what you have to say make ALL the difference. Get a life..
If you are looking for the traditional version, then no doubt this will disappoint you. And yet it offers one an alternative to experience. If all our experiences had to be exactly the same how dull life would be. Yes, it sounds like a different song and yet it is no less magnificent. I don't understand the intense vitriol when there is difference. This version is this rendition and for all commenting and reading .... may peace be with you... God bless.

What a hideous arrangement of this beautiful work! She sounds like and looks like a drag queen in the first part then turns this sacred work into a flashy show off piece. HOW AWFUL and most offensive!
i kinda think she is a bit flat on some parts but i think that adds to her appeal. i really feel she tries to mix opera and jazz together. this girl got range....
I think this version has a R&B and African-American Comtemporary gospel feel to it. I'm not an expert obviously but I do sing opera and African-American gospel. I feel that she was a little to low in the begining, but I still loved it b/c it was very different. She stands out in a good way and I like that about her. she is an inspiration to all young women but especially to African-American girls. Kudos to you Denyce!
I have listened to all the beautiful versions of Ave Maria there are on Youtube, and this one touches me most! Not as soft or as pure as some of the others, but way more expressive!
Oh, how easy to criticise and dissect a singer in tiny little pieces... I am going to listen to Her sing This Ave Maria and learn from her... and in the process if I sing it Half as good as she does, I'll be in heaven... This is not an easy song to sing... Long notes, big breath... Madame, Beautiful, You touched my soul. Bravo.
whoops! i clicked the wrong button! THUMBS UP ALL THE WAY! Totally agree with everything you said! She's a star for a reason- let's learn from her as we sit behind our computer screens...instead of having superiority complexes and whatnot!
WTF? why the background people have to mess up the masterpiece in the making? Also way too many instruments??? This is so stupid. I feel very sorry for her. I think who ever directed this better apologize to her for messing up her voice.
Sumi Jo version is still my favorite. But I will say she is still close second though I think she is more of Mezzo Soprano than a Soprano w/ a broad range of notes.
yah i think they over did it with the instruments and they def didn't need that chorus there. some things are better left untouched- classical! SUMI rocks! she totally owned this song! check out her performance of ich liebe dich.

A dramatic mezzos' and contralto's low register are gonna be masculine singing if they are strong! if they are merely a moan or a mumble they'll be "cutesy".

I love this soo much. Her range is extraordinary. She is one of the best for sure. This performance proves that.

I never knew there was such thing as a fully trained singer... isn't everybody always learning like everyday?
I think it's an awesome performance!

What a hideous arrangement of this glorious work! Denice's lower range is very masculine and unappealing to the trained singer! YUK!

That is why she is up there and you are not ;)

A dramatic mezzos' and contralto's low register are gonna be masculine singing if they are strong! if they are merely a moan or a mumble they'll be "cutesy".

I beg to differ!!! The first art to music is contrast and that is exactly what she conveyed
