very nice!!! stock removal is a good way to make a quick knife, but a forged blade will last generations of abuse!!! sometimes you get what you pay for, handmade or forged!!! keep up the good work!!!
it is good piece of work but it makes me sad that this process is out of tradition. i believe that it is the voice makes you happy when you hit the raw steel with a hammer - not voice of electrical instruments.
@xxwes997xx I didn't include the heat treat in the video. YOu can read about my heat treatment process off my webstie. Here is a summary: Our Heat Treatment is a 2 step process. Heat Harden by Normalizing our steel. This process involves heating the steel to approximately 1500 degrees, until it becomes non magnetic then quenching it in oil. 2nd is Heat Tempering, @ 400 degrees for 2 hours, and letting it air cool. This makes for a Rockwell Hardness of approximately 61.
@edbo7 first. you need atleast two hammers. one small one large. start out slow.. you need an anvil, bench grinder, rotary tools are helpful, a forge and if you can. a beltsander angle grinder and ofcourse some good metal. ( punches, chisels, and a drill are good too :P) hope that helped
@zanuha yeah i never liked holes in blades before. its usually associated with cheap knives. i assume he's doing it to take off weight from the knife but i think it destroys the asthetics.
so my friend, I am wondering what you did for Heat treatment on that blade. I didnt see any annealings, normalizings hardening or tempering. would you be so kind as to detail your HT method for me?
Awesome. What sort of machinery do you use to cut the metal etc and make the knife also what sorts of costs would you be looking at to buy all the stuff to do this? Beast of a knife btw :P
@BLANKMEMORYDATA No. No engineer here. Just somebody that likes to work with his hands. I've been tinkering and making things since I was younger than you. Just pick it up and try making something. You might be surprised how good you are. Thanks, Chris
The main ones are a 4 inch grinder with metal cutting blades and grinder wheels. A sanding station, like a table top belt sander, and any kind of thing you can use to shine up steel. You can look on youtube for resources on heat treating equipment. Thanks, Chris
you should try a folding knife i was lookin at some instructions on line and they dont look that hard to make well it would take skill but the way they work looks to be fairly simple just go to google type in how to make simple folding knife and its was the third or forth link down they show detailed images and and measurments and step by step instructions of how to make your own folding knife
I can make just about anything you can of :) I'll make one eventually. Most of these are from custom orders that I end up adding to my web page to sell. Thanks, Chris
No. Sorry aydee2020, It needs to reach at least 1400 degrees. I beleive most stoves only go up a little over five. Visit my website. On all my knife, sword, spear pages, I explain my heat treatment. Chris
wicked looking blade nice work but PLEASE back the car out of the garage when welding/cutting/grinding so you dont ruin the glass! lol good work keep the vids coming!

does the heating in the flame at the end of the video get rid of all the marks left by filing, sanding, sharpening etc?
if not what does?
yojialjimbo 2 years ago
No. That was just for fun. All the marks are removed by sanding and filing. The heat just hardens and softens it, depending on how you do it.
