This movie was made for half the budget of the last Conan movie remake; and was a lot better. They should have released this in the U.S. instead. I have a bootleg copy my friend picked up in another country on a cruise. It would be nice if this movie got at least a limited release or something its too good to go straight to video.

Kane was Robert E. Howard's first creation, written in the 1920s. The original stories seldom stand up to his later work, like Conan, but they seemed to have breathed new life into the character. And more, from the trailer it looks like this film might be the best attempt to date to bring his characters to the screen. Pity it wasn't put in general release in America.

Not as Epic as "The 13th Warrior', but visually better than "Season of the Witch". Don't be swayed by the whole Van Helsing impersonation because Solomon Kane was around first. Plus thats pretty much how Puritans used to dress back then so its not like either of them own the costume design. Same creator of Conan the Barbarian btw. This can actually come off similar to "Army of Darkness" in terms of witches and demons, minus the comedy and the legendary Bruce Campbell. I just love these movies.

I've been waiting for a Solomon Kane movie since 1972 when I first read the REH books....not true to the original character as some have already stated, just like the Conan and King Kull movies and I expect to be true of the Bran Mak Morn movie when it comes out. Anyway, having recently read a bunch of the comics, one thing I react to with this trailer is the suggestion that Kane has renounced violence in order to save his soul. That seems kinda out of character for someone who genuinely sees himself as a warrior of good, having no problem killing people he thinks has it coming. Kane had a complex personality, but he definitely wasn't a pacifist or liberal-humanist.

This doesn't look like a faithful adaptation of the Robert E. Howard stories. The guy they picked is too cheerful, to young, too good looking. And too cocky and bantering.

A more faithful pick would be gaunt and leathery, grimly silent and focused on the task, not smiling or bantering at any point.

Solomon Kane wears his Christian faith on his sleeve, is resolved to follow the course God takes him on, and then quietly hacks up whoever gets in his way, before traveling elsewhere.

The only reason most people don't know about him is because Hollywood execs generally don't "get" the appeal of these characters; and he was overshadowed by Conan of course. Abraham Van Helsing was created before Kane, but Gabriel-the dude from "Van Helsing", is a new creation, ergo Kane was around decades longer.

@Arvarker Agreed. Basset had only done two movies prior to this, I think, and both had tiny budgets. This was his first big movie, and it was a grand scale epic. All things considered, this movie was pretty damn sweet. The only thing that could have used work was the script, I think, but everything else more than makes up for it.
