Good god, never realized i was only three years old when shadow created this masterpiece. Lotta respect for this guy, this stuff just doesnt get stale!
@newgenre201 I know you're trolling. Let me have this, though.
The purpose of sampling is not laziness. Especially not with Shadow; do you know how much time he spends in the basements of record shops just taking stacks and stacks of really old crap and sorting out what he wants to use?
No, the joy in it is taking things that otherwise would've been forgotten and lost forever to time, and letting them find new life in a completely different form from their original purpose.
@newgenre201 I checked out your Youtube account. You don't have any tracks posted that prove how much of a musical genius you are. And even if you had uploaded your "perfect song" that has a "definitive ending", I'd bet my left nut that DJ Shadow could produce a better track before you can say "I have delusions of grandeur".
P.S. If your looking for someone who can create a perfect song, "I know someone who did". Just hit play.
@newgenre201 Perhaps you could become a less negative and more peaceful person if you would stop judging others based on their personal preferences in life (as long as these preferences don't hurt anybody, of course). Do you really believe you have the right to dictate what other people should and shouldn't like? If you do, "sucks for u". Because you're probably kidding yourself.
@Alexito924 I dont know the song he sampled. But if you have an electric guitar. Go to your local pawn shop and grab a Wah pedal. Get a Cry Baby or a Morley if the have one. Best sound ever.
@Alexito924 : go on wikipedia and search for the album : preemptive strike(album) there is a list of the samples used on In/flux...for some reason, youtube don't allow me to past the link ! have fun !
Trip hop was not coined to replace Hip hop. Stop carring so much about the terms & what they call the FIRST actual Trip Hop track. (it's actually an honor) The track In Flux is what paved the way for the new sound & its category. Many artists followed suit & were influenced by it & they all CANNOT still be considered hip hop as well! Because when things evolve, they have to be coined as a sub-genre. Always has & always will!
Weather you like the terms hip hop or trip hop to describe Shadow, he is deemed hip hop. He contributed his own style to hip hop therefore being a pioneer. He is experimental, samples & uses hypnotic downtempo style to his music which is where TRIP HOP was used to describe it due to its atmospheric trip-like sound.
plus the fact DJ shadow sounds nothing like Massive Attacks early albums that were being made during the same time period nor does Shadow sound like portishead. Do you hear a female lead singer on any of these tracks? NO
what you do hear is a lot vinyl cuts and vocal sampling over breakbeats - that's hip-hop
"trip-hop" is a word used by raver kids in the 90s, keep it there
@theadman024 Just cause it doesnt have a female vocal doesnt mean that makes it trip hop or not. Trip hop is the SOUND. Not the vocals. vocals are contributions. Trip Hop is the Atmospheric trip like sound infused with Hip Hop. Many Trip Hop artists dont sound alike. They all have their distinct sound. But to everyone else who don't know about Trip Hop, would tell you it all sounds the same to them. If you disect the sounds and sampling, yes Shadoe, massive Attack, Portishead sound similar :)
By the way, the Trip Hop word used by raver kids was coined by dumb druggies in another part of the world that had no idea about the hip hop & its atmospheric infusion of the UK. Hip Hop & house was big & when all that Rave crap blew up, they just called it Trip Hop cause they tripped on acid to the sound. Had nothing to do with the Hip Hop sub-genre: Trip hop. Nor was it a overall used term for that short lived rave scene.
You know, if I could turn myself into pure energy, I'd turn myself into a mystical boom box and travel the countless stars bringing this song to the infinite.
@theadman024 To those arguing about whether this is trip hop or not. The term Trip Hop was coined to describe THIS SONG by Andy Pemberton in 1994. So technically, this is the definition of Trip Hop. It may be very different to what you conceptualise Trip to be (most likely MA, Portishead etc.) but it is most undisputably Trip Hop.
@DoubleBrowne and andy pemberton was a WRITER, NOT a musician, "trip-hop" was never a genre Massivre Attack and Portishead both hated the term "trip-hop" and DJ Shadow is hip-hop, he has always been a hip-hop DJ and producer. Just because some Eurotrash, raving wanker reporter decided to make up a word in 94 doesn't make instrumental hip-hop "trip-hop". it's instrumental hip-hop, hip-hop production - period
@theadman024 Massive Attack&Portishead did NOT HATE the term Trip Hop cause they didnt agree that was their sound, they just didnt like it cause they didnt want 2 be limited 2 a style typically because it was a new sound they unknowingly were pioneers of something & didnt want to labeled. They r considered the ones who started a movement so thats justified. They were sampling, experimenting & being unique infusing hip hop, downtempo, jazz, 60's, electronica which is what TRIP HOP is coined for.
@evilspin sorry, massive attack HATED the term, look it up. Portishead HATED the term too and all the little wannabe "trip-hop" acts that followed, look it up.
Trip-hop is a faggit bastardization of hip-hop, hip-hop is hip-hop period. if your too much of a limp-dicked faggit to listen to hip-hop and have to call it something else, fine. But DJ Shadow always has been and always will be hip-hop, no matter what word some eurotrash beat writer wants to make up to describe the sound. get it?
@MloI I agree, music is a very personal experience, especially with an artist such as DJ Shadow. It's stupid to argue over something as trivial as what genre it falls under. That said, I personally enjoy learning about the history of the music I'm listening to. So when I saw a petty argument based on personal opinion, I thought that adding some fact to the mix may clarify things.
