  • You know what? Just listen to it. If you like it, add to your favs and give a thumbs up. If not, then go on and find something else. Music is in the ear of the beholder. That's why we all love music in different formats and genres. Live with it! I would never diss any music just because I didn't like the style or the way it was interpreted. I only wish I had the talent these folks have.

  • has a blending of stairway to heaven mixed in. Very creative

  • Thanks for posting this :) The very good audio more than makes up for the little video wobbles.

  • Bruce! The kind of musician that is so great, you can't stay mad at! LOVE HIM SO!

  • If anyone has the album version of this, will you please contact me?? (:

  • @FoxEatFox I have it, but I have to dig up the disk

  • @cloudtrimmer123 amen, bro. thanks

  • thank you for posting this video. disregard all the rude comments. clearly they can't get past the little things...

  • Already obsessed with the Hornsby / Skaggs album and only just heard the whole thing in it's entirety today! This stuff is from the soul.

  • Love LOVE LOVE this version! The CD of Skaggs and Hornsby is not to miss...IMHO. You get Hornsby's awesome poetry, chord progressions and musicianship AND Skaggs with Kentucky Thunder's superb instrument-playing. Not sure if it is even "Newgrass", it's so unique. Thanks for posting this live version.

  • Bruce Hornsby and Ricky Skaggs made an already powerful song epic if you ask me. The bluegrass arrangement was perfect. Part of my morning ritual now.

  • top tune .i lost mine to the clouds

  • Hornsby has some Celtic in his style, no doubt....I hear that Appalachian in there as well. I saw him a few years back do a solo performance in the pouring rain, very moving...he did a 20 min intro this song.

  • chills,tears ,memories,hmm,

  • Like a Sailor's Song of farewell... Listen to the tears roll Down my face as s/he turns to go....

  • Rarely hear something that seems to have made it through the sands of time like this does...... both ancient and modern.... well done. 5 *****

  • A great arrangement, wow.

If you like this, the "Intersections" box set has some great live reworkings of older songs like Jacob's Ladder and The Valley Road.

  • What a *gorgeous* minor-key reinterpretation of this already haunting song! It doesn't get much more mournful and Appalachian-sounding than this. Made me want to cry--but that's precisely the point: deeply moving!

  • Well put my friend.... sounds very ancient, almost medieval .... quite a universal feeling this song conveys

  • I absolutely love this arrangement. even more than the original

  • He did this in Richmond on Saturday, like this - just gave me shivers, it was so good! Just an incredible arrangement. He's amazingly talented.

  • I fully agree about re-releasing this version of this song. Absolutely love it. It's got an entirely different vibe. Bruce is awesome!

  • This is the way they played it when i saw them at the biltmore house july 09 I like both versions of the song, this one sounds more haunting and to me fits the subject matter of the song better but both versions are great and Bruce is one of the most talented musicians to ever live!!

  • Go Ricky

  • wow... beautiful...!

  • It's turned into a bluegrass/ folk lament! I like it! Different and very good.

  • I'm going to have to agree with nickalmand on this one! hahahaha If these guys aren't the pros then who is? You've got the songwriter along with other pros doing a different version of the original and are appealing to a different group with this unique version. This goes to show you HOW professional and musical these guys are. Bruce is so talented, he could sing this a hundred different ways and all of them would be wonderful in their own way. That is the sign of a true pro and musician.

  • one more example of how America's beauty, and inspiration to the entire world is expressed in our bottomless well of brilliant popular music.

  • america's beauty....LOL good one

  • You have to see one of these shows for yourself to even begin to appreciate the how fantastic these guys play and sound together. These guys are near flawless on some seriously intricate arrangements, and live, the sound is amazing. I see comments farther back crying about playing this in a minor key and liking the original better - sit through this live and let's see if it doesn't put a tear in your eye.

  • Absolutely amazing! MisticMcil really hit it on the head.......the original is great, but this version is so haunting and so powerful. Wish he would re-release this version of the song.

  • This version is available on the Ricky Sckaggs / Bruce Hornsby CD.

  • What a combo! both Bruce Hornsby and Ricky Skaggs are great singers. They sound great together.

  • Wow. amazing!

  • This is simply awesome...what a combo of extreme talent.

  • who are the "profesonals"?...I'm pretty sure Bruce wrote this song and therefore can't "butcherd" it.

  • @420TheBARON Surely you aren't saying that Ricky Skaggs is not a professional???? I know by your screen name you get high...but how high were you when you came up with this "brilliant" review. Is it a different take on the song...of course....but get real dude. Stop smoking grass and start listening to bluegrass

  • Beautiful song. Really heart breaking. While the original one was nice, this one has a soul.

  • I saw Bruce Hornsby & Ricky Skaggs in concert mostly because I wanted to see Mike Farris open the show. I didn't know much about Bruce Hornsby & Ricky Skaggs' project. I was very impressed by the immense musical talent of the 8 of them!

  • This would have been a great video if not for the Gigantic/Black Hole/Saskwatch/Yarn Monster/Muppet/Douchebag that blocked the videographer!

  • HaHaHaHa That's funny right There!

  • I think Hornsby is great, I have had the pleasure of meeting him and he is a very nice guy!

  • why would you say that? It doesn't make much sense to me. Either you like his new rendition of HIS song, or you don't. It doesn't make him an "asshole".

  • And Raminator is an idiot...why would you say something that stupid?

  • This is played in minor keys, thats the difference

  • Bruce Hornsby's voice sounds different when he sings now.....aged... happens to everyone.....so he can't sing it in a higher register....whatever it is an interesting take on an old favorite from growing up....not interesting enough to buy or listen to again....but interesting

  • It's beautiful, but in a despondent way. It seperated me from the first incarnation by Bruce, which made me sad, but smile.

  • That's a really cool way to describe it. The heartache isn't sugar-coated in this version. The song is telling you the story again after the curtain is drawn.

  • 'Try listening to things more like Kentucky Thunder and less to Goddamn Coldplay or Iron and Wine.'

Ouch. I happen to like Coldplay, as well as a lot of other genres.

  • @BourgeoisBuffoon Bro, I happen to love Coldplay and some Iron and Wine. That wasn't my point. Sorry for the offense.

  • @musicbymicah Never a worry, man. We all have tastes and differences of opinion. If the world was run based on music, there'd probably be less hate dwindling around.

  • Don`t like this version. The original is better than this!!

  • I agree. Even though the Ricky/Bruce album is totally amazing and captivating. Nice to actually hear mandolin featured on the tune, finally...lol

  • If people don't like it, they can always learn to play the song themseves the original way... or listen to the original. I've come to find Bruce is all about refreshment, but sometimes if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

  • Yeah, a nice group of musicians...

  • Do you have any idea how long Bruce and Ricky have been doing this? Do you have any realization of how many times they've played to your appetite? Look closer, you fools. This isn't about you. Listen to someone speak with intent without trying to gain your money or favor. These guys don't have to do that anymore.

  • Unfortunately, this is another situation where artists that have spent many years on their craft and know exactly what they intend are completely misunderstood by and audience that thinks it's merely "an experiment."

It's taking someone to a fine restaurant with a world-class chef and hearing their dissatisfaction after the meal because "it doesn't taste as good as McDonald's."

  • eeek, nothing pleasant....cant make a major into a minor very easily...yukk

  • Totally agree here...it doesn't work, at least like this. There are some beautiful lines here, but no dice. Feels flat and murky instead of brooding and dark.

I think a minor version would work if it was a bit more spare instead of so damn florid...as it is, this thing is overloaded...

  • For you and anyone else that can't appreciate this beautiful reinterpretation:

Me, Bruce and Ricky are sorry that you came to the art institute and couldn't find any cotton candy at the concession.

As far as brooding and dark, this is every bit what this ensemble is doing. Try listening to things more like Kentucky Thunder and less to Goddamn Coldplay or Iron and Wine.

  • I don't like Kentucky Thunder or Coldplay, and I don't like this. I like the original version.

If you have a problem with criticism and find it's necessary to make personal attacks due to disagreement, then perhaps it's time to find a good therapist to help you to resolve your anger/resentment issues. Goodbye.

  • pretty sure music will sound like this in heaven! or at least, i hope it does. : )

  • Thank goodness the video is really still.

  • sarcasm? thanks

  • @nickalmand deshaker is awesome!

  • I usually like live versions better than what they produce in the studio. Studio versions are just too sterile and 'perfect' and lack that raw sound of a live performance.

  • Boring version!

  • great version, i saw these guys in shippensburgh, pa 5 hr. drive , well worth it.

  • minor chords

  • i like more the studio version.. this one sounds very different.. and his voice is not the same

  • moevann85 - - The studio recording of this new version can be found on itunes.

  • AMAZING. I think I love this one just a touch more than the original... does anyone know where I can get this version?

  • its not bad but it sounds totally different, not like the same song.

  • yeah, it's completely different except for the words. i first heard him play this in Spartanburg, SC last October and loved it. I was glad he recorded it.

  • thanks for posting the vid! only problem is, it's kentucky thunder.

  • #%&!@#...You're totally right...now I have to go back and change all of them :p

  • what's wrong with Kentucky Thunder?

  • haha, i can see where that comment could come off as malicious, now. in the original description he had written that it was tennessee thunder, so i corrected. don't worry, i'm a huge fan!

  • oh then i apologize for not reading the description. i hate when i jump the gun!

  • Thanks for the post...we need more Bruce posts. I only hope he comes back to the Cape Cod Melody Tent this summer.
