Remember that Sweden scored 15 goals in the tournament whilst Brazil scored 13 and that Sweden beat Bulgaria with 4-0 in the bronze game. Bulgaria had flair and amazing individual skill but I still think that they weren't the fourth best football nation of the world at the time.

Neither was Sweden. Sweden only got to that game because they didn't have to face teams like Germany, Italy or Brazil in the knock-out stages. In the end Sweden beat Saudi-Arabia, Romania and Bulgaria, those weren't really that tough. The whole tournament was also strangely lacking in quality, normally tough teams like Germany and Argentina were very lacklustre, and Argentina were if I remember correctly disqualified because of Maradona's drug use. But anyway, not a memorable tournament.

Do your homework, for starters; Bulgaria beat Germany and then Sweden beat Bulgaria four to nill. Argentina weren't disqualified only Maradona was. Argentina got knocked out by Romania who Sweden, as you mentioned, then beat. Romania was considered to be one of the tournament's best teams with several players in big european clubs. Basically the same Swedish team had two years earlier played a semi-final of the european championship wherer they beat both England and the champions Denmark.

Both Bulgaria and Romania didn't have the kind of consistent big team level of play. They relied on Stoichkov and Hagi, and a couple of other players. They were lucky to be up that high, as was Sweden. Since Sweden didn't have to face the big teams on it's way up I will continue to think of it as being very lucky to have gotten that far. Not that third and fourth place mean much.Or do you think that South Korea was the world's 4th best team in 2002? Sweden just got lucky.

South Korea reached the semi-finals for numerous reasons and advantages that Sweden didn't enjoy in 1994. Fisrtly they payed off the refereés. Secondly their squad had been practising as a team since february 2002 whilst France for instance only got a week of practise prior to the world cup. Remember that Sweden played against Brazil in the group stages where they were evenly matched. The game ended 1-1 and Sweden were, together with Holland, the only country who managed to score aginst them,

Despite absences (england, uruguay past winners) missing several top names (Savicevic, Gullit, Van basten, Cantona, Papin etc..) 94 was the opposite of the tense, negative Italia 90, but equally fascinating...match-ups like Argentina-Nigeria, Cameroon-Brazil...Baggio carrying Italy, then Romania and Brazil who set games alight, and impressive team efforts like Sweden. I loved Romania-Argentina and the day Bulgaria beat Germany. Will always remember 'the greatest show on earth' with fondness.

I remember watching that Colombia-Romania game; before the tournament everybody said Colombia would win the world cup and I switched on the game just before Hagi goal. I went "What?! How the hell can ROMANIA do that to Colombia??" Then the Colombians reduced but the Romanians scored again and I again couldn't believe it. It was one of the greatest shocks I ever experienced watching a football game.
