This is an awesome piece - Vangelis was WAY ahead of his time in the way he used synths. Had to buy the whole album for this track - then found the rest of the album was JUST as good as this.
Its great that the Rock Group YES passed on Vangelis for Patrick Moraz back in 1975 other wise! He wouldn't of had the time to come out with all these classic & wonderful pieces of music throughout the years!
first heard this pieces of music while watching a BBC documentary, the name of the program escapes me. The music affected me so much that I wrote to the Bee-B to find out what that music was. After many weeks of waiting, and not expecting a reply I received a note simply saying, Vangelis using chung kuo, I've been a fan ever since - 1980
I recall this as a watch commercial; either Timex or Pulsar...or was pulsar just a model of a Timex? I just remember the sequencer kicking in and it being the ideal musical representation of time.
my dad introduced me to Vangelis via Albeto 0.39 as a child. Even for the 70s when the album come out, no one around our area (it's a small, simple town) was into the same stuff--and certainly not in the 90s when I came to love Vangelis. so I thank my dad for enlighting me with some culture.
One of my favourite pieces by the main man, Vangelis. Love the way he knows how to make the hairs on the back of your kneck stand up. Also refreshing to read comments that actually disscuss the post and not tear eash other into pieces, so cheers to the fans of Vangelis! Cheers to you all.
I've been looking for this song for 30 years...loved it in the lynx commercial as a kid too. Also like the music from "Heaven and Hell" that they used in Cosmos around the same era. Thank you SO much!
I first bot this album in San Frandisco on a 33 1/3 and didnt have a record player to play it on...I heard his music , and couldnt believe how beautiful it was....Here it is 28 years later...and I still enjoying listening to Vangelis.... What a fantastic sound and music....
strange how songs bring back memories and I remember my older and only brother playing this music loud when parents were not home .... then later hearing it on that Lynx commercial....... he turned me on alot of music and not many people I speak with ever heard of this ...when you mention Vangelis they only knkow Chariots of Fire but there is so much more !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just found this music, for me it was HMS Endurance done by pebble mill just before the falklands war it brings back so many memories and they have stuck with me until this day
This takes me back to a gliding trip twenty-five years ago in the French Alps. We took a car and drove into Switzerland. There's something glacial about it - it was the perfect theme music to all the surrounding snow-topped mountains. Gorgeous!
I remember when I bought the "Themes" CD (for the unreleased "Blade Runner" music and I remembered this music from the Lynx commercial as well as the "Missing" theme from that phone commercial.
at last I have found this piece of music, I heard it on Radio 2 about 25 years ago, haunting and beautiful, when the final day is on me, this has to be in my ears as I close my eyes.....
I first heard it on Pebble Mill at One during a feature on HMS Endurance (I think) the antarctic patrol ship. Like you I never knew what the piece was until recently. It's a beautiful piece. Calming, like a smooth antarctic ocean.
Nope, it was for the introduction of the Mercury LN7. The TV spot used this track behind it as a giant red ball appeared in the middle of a sun-baked desert with a bright blue sky. Then a red carpet appeared. Camera swept past the red ball and and to a bunch of red smoke. Finally, a lime green LN7 suddenly appeared. Camera panned around the car and then ended up on Chauncey the Cougar sitting atop the red ball. Very cool commercial way ahead of its time.
Not exactly a music video, but I'm glad you made it available.
I'm elated you mentioned the Lynx, since that's I found out about it; I actually called up Ford marketing to ask about the song. They could not have been happy to admit the choice of title.
I think the beginning is about fireworks. We commonly hear this 5-minute excerpt, but I think the whole song is over 7 minutes. But, like Chinese opera, it becomes dissonant with a discordant finish that perplexes the Western ear.
Yes i remember this song on a commercial it was the background music for a 1980 mercury lynx car i remember a real lynx\cat walking around or on top of the car during the commercial i think the car was green or black. i was only 11 years old back then. that song stuck with me for almost 3 decades finally i searched the internet and used the keywords mercury lynx commercial etc etc and someone mentioned vangelis china/chung kuo i ordered the cd and and the rest is history. just a great song
@complexmetal Hey! This is exactly my experience. I remember the commercial had the car out in a red desert at sunset, right? And the cat climbed up on the car. It was right around the time of the TV miniseries version of Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles I think, and I always conflated the two in my memory. But I loved this music enough to do exactly what you did and look for it on youtube. Funny. It's a great piece! Morgan777gc, thanks or posting!
@complexmetal I too, remember the Lynx commercial. It featured this song and there was a live bobcat, who jumped up on the hood and was checking things out while a narrator talked about miles per gallon. Selective memory? I was pregnant with my first child and this got airtime in late 1980. Don't recall which show I was watching, but I remember this commercial! For the music....and the cute bobcat =)
@complexmetal I did the same...I remember a lynx getting on the hood of the car...I listened to the music and told myself, "This is the future?" "I am going to get a car like that when I get older"; I was 9 years old. ;-)
I'm a chevy guy. And there are no more lynx cars around. I remember when StarWars came out and would dream what the future would be like. I was dream what the world would be like, similar to the movie "Logan's Run"...

@JPyle66621 Yeah! That's where I first heard this. Totally carried me off to another world as a kid to hear that on the TV. So happy to have found it again.
Always wondered if the original Chung Kuo was before the 1:44 mark, as I've seen the time marked different on another album. Reguardless, I love this piece, the Dragon, Himalaya, and Tao of Love.
Amazing piece, I think I heard this on a pulsar watch commercial or a Lincoln mercury Lynx commercial around 1980. Wow this guy was ahead of his time.
