Looking back I should have made it a tutorial, but it was to simply show the restoration. Given all of the requests, I will look for the original files and do my best to re-create it.
What I can tell you in the short term, when you are putting a photo back together or trying to eliminate damage, lines or cover holes, use the clone tool, the 9th tool down on the left side. Take good "information" next to the damage and paste it over the damage,
Well that's wonderful, but instead of giving us useless info, you could have told us, STEP BY STEP, HOW you did all that in photoshop so we can do the same thing...
Very impressive. What a great feeling it must be to restore such an important photo. I have only 1 photo of my grandfather, and I'm having problems restoring it to it's full potential. This video will go some way in achieving my goal. many thanks.
Good job. I just started with doing this as well. It sure brings about tender feelings for these people that were once "dead" in black & white and come "alive" through color. I am impressed with your skin tones and especially your thoughtfulness to add blush to her cheeks. Great job!
Could you please do it in a Step by Step way and not in a finished comparison product?... Im trying to learn here to restore my granma's very ancient pic and I need to have a copy of it this week of the newly restored version... Thanks... hope you could do it soon... NSL
She passed away in the 60's. I was young. I would have also wished my dad would have been around long enough to see the photo. I don't think he ever saw it other than in two very small pieces. I am working on restoring another photo and will try to show along the way howI restored it. Thanks for your comment. HS
Thanks, Karen. I didn't go into details because it would have been a long tutorial, but it basically consists of alignment of the pieces, use of the clone tool to fill in whatever's missing and to get rid of wrinkles and other flaws. Once I had a clean black and white, I think I used an airbrush in either the dissolve or overlay mode and applied a little color, a little rouge for the cheeks, flesh tones etc, and lowered the opacity so that I was coloring, rather than painting over.
Your work is truly amazing. I didn't need to know what or how you did it, I kind of figured it out how to do it with my Paint Shop Pro and what tools to use. Besides, your explanation throughout the video is well done. I will try to restore some old B&W pictures I got from my in-laws.
The video goes a bit quickly and it doesn't explain much. But thanks again for the kind words, and perhaps I will do some more restoration in the weeks to come. Regards,
When I did this slide show video, I lowered the color a bit and it printed out nicely. The cameo effect is achieved by selecting, and then under selection, choose feather, about 5 pixels. Then cut and re-paste. It creates a new layer with the cameo. Just discard the original layer and it will appear as a feathered cutout.
I am not an artist and not even a graphic artist. When you learn a few tricks it makes all the difference. Adobe has online tutorials. Check "colorizing" and it should give you details. Those of us left in the family cherish the photo. Thanks for taking the time to write. H

@ibex333 I totally agree with you. The step by step is the real value of any photoshop related video posted at youtube.

Thanks, Karen. There are people who do a better job at showing HOW it is done. I just wanted to show that it can be done.
