As a foreign national, there is no explicit right of any kind for you in China, only curtsy. US can wiretap or put surveillance on foreign citizens without due course. Why not China. I seem to remember that they shot at a few Al Jazeera reporters during the Iraq invasion. I think an objective person would ask himself if he wanted to actually affect change (even slightly) to their SYSTEM of government. If the answer is yes, then you are not a journalist but an agent - BBC blurs that line on china

John Sweeney displays the over inflated self important attitude that makes us ashamed to be British. He acts as though he has some God given right to go where he pleases and do what he sees fit in a foreign country. His aim was clearly to paint as poor a picture of the Chinese as he could find. It would hardly be surprising if he were not allowed to return. Indeed, I may very well write to the Chinese suggesting that he gives the rest of us a bad name and he should be banned.

Give me a break. What most of this is, is corrupt LOCAL authorities who are not even obeying the laws of the central government and intimidating journalists both from outside AND inside China. And it's their OWN people they are screwing up, not foreigners. When your child is killed because a corrupt official has taken a kickback and you can't even talk about it or attend official memorials for the dead, it ain't about nationality.

Why would the West be jealous of China,Sweeney never said anything bad about China until this silly young Chinese reporter came in and started making unfounded acquisations on how the interview would be perceived, i`m all for a peaceful and understanding world but at this stage i would say the Chinese authorities are not capable of accepting any form of democracy.certainly nothing to be jealous of!!

The BBC have nothing good to say about China because the rise of China in the 21st century really making the west jealous especially after the return of Hong Kong to China.The west only happy to see a poor and weak China but they won't see that anymore because in the 21st century China will only get more and more powerful and nothing the west can do about it so BBC keep talking and fool the british public.

Its easy to cast doubt on Chinas intentions or look for flaws in their systems. Remember that If I were to wear a T-shirt supporting Kurdish seperatists in Parliament square in London, I could be arrested and held for over a month without charge.

People have been taken to court in this country for T-Shirt slogans, thats a fact. We have recently tried People and Jailed them for " Thinking about doing something " i.e Thought Crime. We have had Brits in Guantanamo who are released with No Charge after 5 years.

well, if u can give me the details of the case of a person who was arrested and held for a month without charge for a month, for wearing a t-shirt which supported Kurdish separatists, then maybe we could talk about it, but am guessing that you made it up.

I quote from multiple cases, the mish-mash of anti terrorism legislation imposed on the British People under this totalitarian " Government". What has happened so far is just arrest, interogation, printed and DNA samples taken then release under caution for possesion of offensive material ( The PKK shirt ) but the potential to detain has been imposed. Why have you put "Governemnt" in quotes? You don't think the British government is real?! As for "authoritarian", wasn't it voted in? We are taking up space on a page which should be about China. I live in China, if you want to see what REAL authoritarian government is like, come visit!
