It wasn't a mix situation but just overlaying the steel, that's the normal type of mix used for overdubs. Developing the part is what the video is intended to show, plus the fact that the requirements of a session musician are the capability to repeat the same phrase and 'Polish" it over a few runs.
I'm certainly not comparing what I do at the amateur level to what YOU do (!) but I know what you mean about playing the same thing over and over to polish it. The computer keeps track of takes, and I've done close to 100 without even realizing how many there were! It goes quick, too...
I would love to know what the song was so I could hear the finished product.
