  • I wish she was still sailing. I'll have to settle for QM2 now

  • would the rhapsody of the seas be counted as a liner or a cruise ship? it has a long and sharp bow

    ?

  • @trentos10 there is only one liner sailing the world today and that is the QM2...

  • Di Caprio should be standing on the tip of the bow

  • omg that makes me sik just watchin it

  • Poor old QE2 - she was completely devalued when the Arabs bought her

  • On the Great lakes ,you have what is called the 7Th and 11Th wave. When you count out waves and you count in 7, you'd be hit with a high wave and if you then count 4 more too the 11th and you'd be hit again. Next time you see major waves along the shoreline of any of the Great Lakes, just start too count from the last big one you just saw.

  • Ships are amazing. When you place in Ballast or water in tanks in the bottom of the ship. It takes on water too ride lower in the water and is like having lead on the bottom darn near making it almost self righting. Chance of a roll over are pretty slim. It can happen, but the ship really needs too lean too the point where the upper deck is in the water.

  • Superb footage of this wonderful ship in her element!

  • look a calm day in the North Atlantic, time to shoot the net I think LOL

  • Now that you have all seen this Clip, Why not look at the ``Grand Voyager`` clip in bad Weather, and make a comparison..

she is a disgrace, all over the place, these Queens were built proper when men were men and not by Computers

Built where all proper ships were built on the Clyde Scotland

    Shonnie Bhida a Ranish

  • i luv the way it just flows so smoothly thru those huge waves

  • Great British North Atlantic liner. It should have been tied up and kept as a museum in Britain when retired.

  • LOL.Wheres the ship gone....Great Body Slam at :032...Great Vdeo....really impressive.

  • Doing what she does best - and with such grace too.

  • Ooooh I'd love those waves in such an incredible ship... My wife on the other hand...

  • @threeblackcats

She would have been doing 27 knotts, standard for the Atlantic crossings.

  • omgg big waves but amazing video xx

  • I'm very impressed Douglas =)

  • cool she must have been going full speed ahead. and i like the bow desine.

  • She is the last beautiful ship.

  • @QE2Caronia

Queen Mary 2, is the last...now that economic times have had effects....although there is rumors in the office of a sister QM2 coming out.

  • @qemc More details on the rumoured QM2 sister please.

  • @joelang6126 Just rumours at the moment, but as the saying goes, there is no smoke without fire....and as Mickey Arison loves the Cunard brand, this really is not an impossibility, even in todays hard economic times, so watch this space eh.

  • I have to say she pierces the waves perfectly.

Most ships would be banging into the wave with a resulting wall of spray!.

A true classic of a ship.

  • "Oh jello! Well I feel like I'm on the deck of the QE2!" -Stewie Griffin

  • wow!! cool!! i love it...

  • when was this taken do you know?

  • september 2007 en route to Canada

  • @blumenrausch

en route to canada crossing the atlantic sep 07

  • Do you have soup-du-jour in the restaurant on such days or do you just have something like sandwiches which won't make a mess?

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy

  • wow, those are some serious waves! i have never experienced anything like that in all of my 13 cruises! wow! coudos to the people who had to put up with it!

  • Holy fuck, eh?

  • I used to watch the bridge cam regularly in my cabin when I worked in there in 1988/89.

There used to be some fantastic footage of waves and storms.

Even though she is 70000 tons, consider the force behind the water, which used to buffet us and often cause the vessel to shudder as the propellers came out of the water.

I have in my posession one of the morse keys from the radio room, given to my by my boss, as a lasting memento of my time on board.

  • how often, would you say, a cruise ship hits storms such as this? Would it be common to hit at least one storm per cruise?

  • nah, the worst you get are high winds at night when the boats going really fast but thats on deck so easy to avoid

  • That video was taken on QE2s bridge. QE2 does'nt have any forward facing public rooms for passengers. She had the Lookout but that was removed years ago and now only has the open observation deck under the bridge.

  • It looks like they are heading directly into the storm.

  • That was on the QE2 bridge as I was there when it was filmed...

  • wow whats the qe2 like inside i bet its posh

  • was that in mid atlantic cause i just been on QM2 trans-atlantic southampton to new york

  • I was on the millennium crossing (1999 2000) England to NYC and was tossed out of my bed at 3 AM from a wave.

We blew in the windows on the upper bar level, but

I never felt uncomfortable about the QE2 she is a true ALL OCEAN CRUISER...

  • I had the pleasure of crossing on the QE2 from NY to Southampton in August, 1980. Fantastic experience! I clearly recall approaching the British coast, and being buffeted by powerful wind gusts.

  • QE2 and Queen Mary 2 can handle rough weather much better than the earlier Queens. The Queen Mary was a serious roller until she has stabilizers installed in the 1950s.

  • Believe it or not, I reed in a book that the QE2 could handle rough weather better than the larger QM and QE.

  • gee...maybe because it was much more modern

the QE2 was built in 1969, and the other two in the 1930's

    high tech always beats size

A modern compact car is much more stable (and safer too) in high speeds than really big cars from the 1950's

  • QE2 is'nt exactly rusting away in Dubai. A few weeks ago she had a complete exterior re-painting and drydocking. It was the 1st time in drydock in several years. She looks pristine at the moment.

  • Poor passengers below! The Queen Elizabeth (predecessor to QE2) was amazing as well..but she brought comfort with the creaking wood of her panelling when she rocked & rolled unlike the plastic of QE2! Missing them both dreadfully...unbearable thinking of QE2 just rusting away in Dubai now.

  • Simple three words that define Cunard and the QE2....Elegant, Memorable & Legendary.

  • wow...can u imagin e that on the carnival triumph........heheheheheh

  • The carival ships would seriously suffer in seas like this..they are cruise ships and not liners.

  • @burtonboy67

The Carnival Triumph is bigger though it is not an oceanliner and might not be able to with stand this crap

What about Oasis of the Seas?

  • @desmondwkyip

We (QM2) left New York UK bound, the same time the Oasis was US bound, we encountered rough seas (The infamous Atlantic), and the QM2 arrived safe and on time, the Oasis was 3 days, and their Captain said in a blog, "The ship could handle anything the Atlantic threw at her" then I thought, well being on time is something quite simple lol. Cunard ships are and will always be legendary, everyone knows a Cunard ship.

  • @qemc

Oh you mean Oasis of the seas? Oh do they do transatlantic cruises?

  • its funny how the people on the bridge always laugh at the waves while people in the rest of the ship are freaking out.

  • @piloty5 It's a lot easier to deal with it mentally when you can see what's coming as you can counteract the movement more easily. Inside the bowels of the ship, you just have to go with, which is why some people may end up feeling queasy

  • @lawsonrob thats true, but its still funny.

  • British Built = Strongest and most graceful

    modern ocean liner

  • just like the titanic

  • first go to talk crew and captain you can see bridge

  • does he really need wipers. what is he need to see that cant be seen through a wet window

  • Wipers!? ...I need my surfboard.

  • lol Windcreen wipers on a boat

  • yeah they usually have them on a bridge

  • Were you standing on the bridge?

  • Cunardia, it's kinda obvious he is.

  • Miami...there could be a number of other places where this could have been filmed, like the Officers Wadroom or the Officers cabins that are underneath the bridge....although, the windscreen wipers does kinda give it away, lol.

  • i thought it had guns at the front for a moment then lol

  • i love this, she slices through the waves!

  • The worst weather for Rose and Jack! XD

The QE 2 is now in Dubai as a hotel. : (

    Goodbye QE 2!

  • the thing is the QE2 is in Dubai and they have'nt started work on it yet. and now the think they never will and they wont sell it on:(

  • What a wasted opportunity. Definitely should have a swimming pool on the bow. ;-)

  • This just shows what a fantastically designed ship the QE2 was.

You can see that she just cuts the wave and pearces through it due to the shape of her bow.

  • I will second that! I was onboard for months at a time as a musician, she is the most graceful ship in the world and she handled force 10s very well!

  • Moving pretty fast in those size waves!?!

Good Video rated 5 stars, but it shuld have been a longer video!!!

  • OMG!!!! YOU HAVE A AWESOME JOB!!!!

  • Nice video!! looks crazy

  • this is nothing.. its the front who going to much down...

  • knob.

  • This is man versus nature.

  • She can take it...she's a Queen.

  • pause at 0.32!

  • Seems like a very steady ship. Plowing through those waves.

  • Dear rakshasa,

Thanks for your intriguing response, and data about that special " lee sheet" it really does sound to be THE solution; I checked and it is not yet a patented idea, and so, you want really to register the idea yourself - hurry !

    .

I checked Wikipedia and all they had was "T.B. Sheets" is a blues-influenced song written and recorded by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison,

    .

But not a thing about lee sheets

    Cheers

    from

    del-boy.

  • An awesome video of an awesome ship - sheer power!

  • That's when u take ya' girl back to the room and ride them waves....

  • Bloody hell! That's a massive ship, waves were rough as fuck!

  • Dear raksah.

    Thanks for your information.

It does sound practical and would be effective as long as the movements were such as one didn't fall out.

    .

Falling out and hitting something would really put one permamently off getting to sleep; one would wake-up just beforehand.

    .

    A bit like stay-awake torture, i suppose.

    cheers.

  • woo! look at 0:30!

  • Well I was the ship Captain aboard this rig. An aye was just a makin it up the skip dankle blaster board when 'em waves a commin are on the star board side ye see?!! An me next mate was a harkling on the yank walk when he got a mouth full a scallops from the weezin cloper! Arrr! I ain't even goin' a skankin w/ that 'ol mate again ya hear! Arrg!

  • ROFL! Arrg! :P

  • Dear Doog.,

If one went to ones cabin to lie down while a big storm like this was going on, would one need a seat-belt for the bed?

    Cheers.

  • Arrrg! That he might mate!

  • he he he !

    cheers.

  • The difference w/the now retired QE2 is she could still maintain speed is weather like that where other cruise ships (except QM2) need to slow considerably. She was designed for seas far worse than that AND maintain her speed.

  • Independence of the seas got broadsided by a wave in 2006 I think, the wave went over deck 14 & windows were smashed all over the place. The Atrium on deck 4 was completely flooded about 1mtr deep. Had pumps running all night to empty it out

  • independence of the seas wasn't in service in 2006 and for a wave to smash over deck 14 it must have been well in excess of 120ft high. take it this was a dream you had right!!

  • 0:35 got owned

  • That's nothing compared to some stormy weather. Back in the day, QUEEN MARY 1 use to list side-to-side 44 degrees, and the waves would gulp the bow under so much, the sea would sometimes reach all the way up to the Sun Deck...would be awsome to see a video of that, eh?

Always cool to see these vids, thanks for posting. Interesting to see a ship still in the dock, knowing that bow was covered below the waterline...radical!!!

  • my mom use to work on this boat :)

  • oh and ty for posting the vid . its great.. just a shame too many know it all kids post on here :) ur very lucky to have sailed on her .. she truly was a great queen :)

  • jesus christ!! where the hell have you been muppet! it is very common in recent times to have f11/f12s with 22mtr swell in the atlantic ocean! its just unlucky if a rogue"wave moving in another direction to swell" hits broad. thats when the damage begins. ive been on aurora and oriana when they been hit by 90ft waves.. and they dont televise much!!! its all to common..... had a few broken windows off the coast of africa on the aurora 2007/2008 new years cruise no svre damge there muppet!!

  • Dude no idea why you are reply to that comment. its months old. and broken windows along the side of the ship can be counted as sevre damage. It is a place that lets water into the ship which can lead into sinking. There have been many times when ships have sunk because of this. And i believe that a "rogue wave" is about 30mtrs in hight.

  • jamesj1992 rogue waves do not have to be 30 mtrs (thats 100ft by the way) as im sure you know in heavy seas you go up swell.. but somtimes you get a dirty bugger wave that broadsides you (hence rogue wave) and its very common to break windows on a cruiseship.. they dont sink! yes the sustain damage but they still float.. september 11th 1995 qe2 was hit by a 100ft wave , did she sink? nope. oriana was hit by a 22mtr wave in 2000 with me on her, did she sink?

  • You obviously dont understand what im trying to say. Yes not all ships will sink because of a rogue wave. But getting hit by a rogue wave to the side of the ship is very bad. Since the upper windows of the ship ARE NOT designed withstand the force of a rogue wave on impcat. This can lead to water getting into the ship, short circuiting systems etc which can leave the ship not able to move, with the possibilty of more water getting in through the broken windows.

  • james you are right in saying that smashed windows can cause shorting of systems, however this would be very rare as the navigation and engin systems are protected very well on sea going cruiseships.. the real damage is to d deck height where you sit and have dinner. the windows are much larger there and for that they are weaker by far, any water that gets inside the ship is pumped back out in seconds too .. the real danger is people being sick on you while in rough seas :)

  • ive been on a few ships where they have large windows going up the side of the ship. not just a single deck.

  • ooh it looks relaxing :D

  • I have just returned home from taking the QE2 to Dubai, all I can say is, it is time for the old lady to say goodbye. I have listened to what the new owners are going to to do her and it is all good, some people wont agree, but spending $450,000,000 on her can only make her look good, whether this is sparkling and gleaming like everything else is in Dubai or restoring her to her former glory early glory days, we can only thank the Arabs for keeping her body alive although, now her soul is dead.

  • b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l!

  • I like how you are inside, i was in 40 knots for 48 hours in a 57ft yacht sailing in freezing conditions off of New England, i have toyed with joiing the Merchant fleet but right now, having too much fun in each port i go to. US girls I am sure are not as easy as cruise liner crew but still lots of fun

  • Thats what you pay the big money for. Its all the fun of the fair ha ha

  • It's not the bow that's the problem on the new Queens it's the shape of their hulls. Whilst drawing very little water (ease of access to so many ports) and flat underneath rather than rounded gives the impression of them sitting ON the water rather than IN. and this combined with very, very high sides must make them very difficult to keep on course in high winds and heavy seas. Or am I wrong?

  • This is true for the Queen Victoria But not for the Queen Mary 2 which is built for transatlantic runs as was the QE2 and there for is not "flat bottomed".

  • woooooow...did you get sea sickness? *lol*

  • The QM2 bow deck was designed by Stephen Payne from his careful study of the same area on the French's Normandy from the mid-1930's. The purpose was to deflect and move the seawater off the bow as efficiently as possible. RFB in Colorado (just sailed on QE2's last transatlantic to Southampton with the QM2)

  • The designer of Queen Mary 2 (Stephen Payne) did look at QE2 when designing QM2. QM2 like QE2 was designed for fast Transatlantic crossings and able to keep to schedule in the event of adverse weather. Most passenger ships would have to slow down while QE2 and QM2 are designed for it.

  • As I understand it the designers copied the QE2's bow shape on the QM2 as it was so efficient on her transatlantic runs as demonstrated here.

  • The QE2 looks as if it could take heavy weather no problem. I should imagen far better than the new Queen. The new Queen looks as if it is built for the Med and not the Atlantic? A ship has to move with the sea and not fight against it. Yes, even the Queens. I have two Westerlies. A Nomad and aCirrus that were designed

in the 60s for the North sea. Modern yachts are completely differently designed. Their designs follow trends. Trends are dangerous because they usually follow the easiest routes.

  • what sea was this

  • after that the ship is clean and washed.

  • I love the way that such a big ship has windscreen wipers

  • If we are going to be precise about it the SS United States actually did 43 knotts...

  • QE2 is the fastest passenger ship in service today w/a top speed of over 32 knots. Queen Mary 2's top speed is around 30 knots. The ss United States of 1952 was an ocean liner (not a cruise ship) and she was the fastest ocean liner ever w/a top speed of nearly 40 knots.

  • does QE2 docks in Malaysia?

  • The QE2 does dock in Malaysia, sometimes Port Klang or Penang...but not anymore as she will be retiring this November and all engines will be stopped for the final time on 9th Dec.

  • The Queen Mary 2 is the best..I might go on there next summer again...wooot...

  • Was being the operative word...the QE2 IS the fastest now.

  • actually sir the fastest cruise ship in the world was the U.S.S. United States

  • You mean the fastest ocean liner? The SS United States is indeed the fastest ocean liner in the world, proof of that is that the ship still holds the Hales Trophy after all these years. I do hope the ship gets preserved.

  • I agree with you, Titanic0002, preserve her. As of today, she still sits rusting in the Delaware but still looking grand.

  • I think you will find the SS US does not hold the Hales Trophy anymore and hasn't for over 11 years now...the Brits have the Hales Trophy, back in her real home.

  • May I add that the 96ft wave story is completely true, I have the pics on board of the damage that is did to the bow of the ship...and the stories of those that are still here today. Any other cruise ship and for sure there would have been damage ten times worse, QE2 is a testament to British engineering which sadly stopped with the test of time, still the fastest cruise ship in the world and the most travelled vehicle, nearly 6 million miles travelled...truly amazing.

    QE2 Personnel Manager

  • Well actually. I said it was VERY UNLIKLY this ould ever happen. Never said impossible. And fud, call taht an insult. Lol. :)

  • Yea, I heard it would have sunk most any other ship, but due to her size and strength she survived. (It would have prolly got this camera all wet!)

    Amazing footage.

  • im going on it tomorrow !

  • I was at the QE2's side yesterday and will be again on sunday in Southampton.

  • omg in driving down to southampton tomorrow and staying in a hotel. I will be on it on sunday too !

  • Small world on youtube ;)

Enjoy your trip...you will love the ship.

  • I'm going on her this Thursday! I can't wait. I've not been this excited in years. It's one of her last voyages.

  • Queen Elizabeth 2 (and Queen Mary 2) was designed for that. Unlike regular cruise ships that have to slow down in rough seas, QE2 can keep her speed up and stick to schedule. She is still the fastest passenger ship in the World w/a top speed of over 32 knots.

  • Quite right..most cruise ships have small flatter hulls so have to stick to calmer waters...Liners like the QE2 and QM2 have deeper hulls to provide stability in rough seas.

  • id go out there lol :P

  • awsome

  • hey..wats QE?

  • QE stands for Queen Elizabeth

  • They must be enjoying there almost doom or because there safe inside either way.

  • great video

  • Cool video, thanks for sharing

  • the qe2 is the nices ship in the world

  • Those have got the be the puniest wipers ever.....

  • geez.......... how are you not screaming????

  • im not long back from my first cruise and had an experence sailing through a force 10 storm and i was shitting maself, it was across the bay of biscaye and id never seen waves as big and within an hour there was no water in any of the swimming pools.

i was aboard p&o cruises the oceania

  • This was filmed last September (2007) on the way to Canada on the good old Atlantic, about two days out of the UK. I remember it well, my office is a couple of decks unders the bridge, and my two assistants were shitting themselves, lol...it got allot rougher later on in the day too, sterdy as ever she just ploughed in through.

  • (sigh)...Home! :)

I'll miss that view from the observation deck..

  • Vicky would also not be going 28.5 knots!

  • wow=)
