  • Eric Morgan is my favorite -3

  • EDIT: AAAND! Jon Gomm :D

  • You could also add jimmy whalsteen, stefano barone, and sergio altamura. Just pointing you out to other good artists, since you have a pretty good list; I've discovered a few new artists thanks to you :)

  • Ok, so you can say Segovia is classical (John Williams etc..) , and Bob Dylan a balad writer, and Brian May an electric guitar player...BUT WHAT ABOUT LEO KOTTKE ?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice

  • And Masters SEGOVIA & John McLaughlin are missing

  • SHAWN LANE IS GOD!!!

  • What's the name of the tune that Chet played? So familiar but can't figure out the title.

  • @ConfusedSponge Atkins is playing "Vincent", by Don McLean. It was on the "American Pie" album.

  • @robstolzer Oh, yeah. Starry, Starry Night ;-)

  • Adrian Legge

  • BRIAN MAY of QUEEN?

  • Bob Dylan???????

  • Django Reinhardt didn't make the cut, really? Buster B. Jones, Marcel Dadi, Leo Kottke?

  • tommy emmanuel should be number one

  • Where is Zac Brown on this list?!!

  • Eric Clapton???????

  • becuase sungha jung is the master of the top 15 guitarist

  • sungha jung

  • 1:40 Is not music!

  • Where the hell is Yamandú Costa?

  • KELLER WILLIAMS!

  • lenny breau woukd definately be my top #1 guitarist of all time. Not only di dhe have virtuoso hands his musicality depth of hamonies and unique melodies put him head and shoulders above anyone else As much as I love Tommy his chops are second to none he basically uses 4 or five chord progressions Not sure if u understand music much but your list suggests you do not. Tanks for posting but really there was just nobody like Lenny! miles above anyone else

  • tommy je nambr van PICKO!!!!!!!!!

  • Jesse Cook?

  • Silvain Luc, Bireli Lagrene and Joscho stephan.

  • trace bundy?

  • If you slapped my guitar like that I would carefully remove it from your hands, then kick you in the nads. Just sayin...

  • Phil Keaggy, have a listen 'Beyond Nature'

  • Dave Matthews?

  • John Renbourn, Martin Simpson, Pierre Bensusan and Tony McManus are pretty good!

  • Bill Mize, Al Petteway, Richard Smith, Ed Gerhard, Pete huttlinger, Andrew York? These guys should be on the list.

  • Tommy emmanuel is by far my favourite.

  • Leo Kottke? The King of the 12-string.

  • I cant believe Paco de Lucia is not on #1 or even in this list at all. Also listen to VIcente Amigo if you can. These guys are not only amazing guitarists but also composers. Much of the stuff you show here is masturbation on the guitar and not to be considered music, imho.

  • I never expected Michael Hedges to be your No1 !!!!

Wow, nice one. Hedges is my all time favourite acoustic guitarist.

  • @ColinBobbyDartford Hedges is insane. Easily the best in my opinion. Listen to the end of Menage a Trois.

  • I'm sorry, but I find this slapping of the guitar really boring and irritating. Where's al di meola? Paco de Lucia?

  • I'm so glad you didn't put John Fahey on this list. I would bet that he would have absolutely hated being grouped with these guitarists.

  • Tim Reynolds?

  • It´s clear to me that it´s your list. But try some spaniards, they just fucking invented the whole thing. Segobia is the name to be watched. Turibio, a brazilian, is also amazing. But I respect your choice.

  • Comment removed

  • john butler?

  • Number 11 scratched a mans back.. he died..

  • how mad is when tommy goes.. look out and then bust all that fast shit haha what a legend

  • sungha jung must be on the list

  • Keller williams

  • Some great stuff on your list! I think you'd like Ilya Truanov.

Young Russian guitarist - gorgeous melodies and rhythms.

    Also, try Emmett Chapman. =o)

  • Some great stuff on your list! I think you'd like Ilya Truanov.

Young Russian guitarist - gorgeous melodies and rhythms.

  • Some great stuff on your list! I think you'd like Ilya Truanov.

Young Russian guitarist - gorgeous melodies and rhythms.

  • Where's Pierre Bensusan??? :-(

  • @6032jarod Yeah lol Kaki King is on the list but not Pierre. He's about 50 levels above her.

  • Paco de Lucia ?

    Yamandú Costa ?

    Robson Miguel ?

    Al Di Meola ?

  • Tommy Emmanuel is my #1.

My family just heard him live at a concert in New Brunswick, NJ. He was truly amazing, his cd's and dvd's are great but there is nothing like a live performance, so much more exciting in every way.

Check his website and tour schedule, try to go hear him, you'll be glad you did !

  • all down to personal taste i suppose,--- personally i think you have about 11 of the most boring guitarists, ever heard john williams, eric clapton, leo kotke, david gilmore,

mark knopfler, and a host of others play accoustic ?

  • I agree 100% with your number 1 choice...Michael Hedges was an AMAZING and innovative musician.

  • Where is John Butler?

  • Lenny Breau got 3? You must be crazy. Easily number one. Also most these guitarists play the same or a similar style. You should really expand the list to include all kinds of acoustic players, and just pick the best from each style.

  • @Sunderlanding Lenny Breau was amazing. But only sounds about a tenth as good as some of michael hedges music.

  • @andrewkeen24 Maybe if you don't know what they're playing, but if you analyze their style you'll see Micheal Hedges is all open-tunning flash, and Lenny is very sophisticated. There's a reason a thousand YouTube users can play like Hedges and no one can do what Lenny did.

  • @Sunderlanding Your ears don't seem to pick things up very well then because every hedges cover i've heard generally sounds like shit. Kaki king and Andy Mckee are supposed to be "proffesionals" and there covers sound nothing like michael hedges. Also as I say lenny was amazing.

  • @Sunderlanding And it's not open tuning flash. He didn't seem to be showing off ever. Just playing good sounding music.

  • @Sunderlanding Also I have been into all of the most intense electric guitar styles for years so you must understand that lenny seems alot more normal to me. I knew about the guy for years, just knew he was brilliant and alot better than anyone else around him at the time. Michael hedges music and ability seems alot more interesting.

  • @andrewkeen24 Harmonically Hedges music is about as sophisticated as Nickleback. It's all tricks and nonesense, and it all sounds the same. Lenny could play any style, he could solo, he could play basslines and melodies, chords and melodies, chords and basslines, he was great with harmonics. No one can even come close to what he did. For someone to go from begginer to the level of Hedges or Breau it would take much longer to get to Breau.

  • @Sunderlanding No you are confused my friend. How quickly you learn something depends on what youve been practising in the past. A friend of mine would play a lenny solo very easily because he has practised techincal solo guitaring for years. He wouldnt be able to play a hedges song properly without a massive amount work. Also he would sound just like lenny and would not sound properly like hedges. You've boxed yourself in. Go watch shawn lane and understand how easily he could play like lenny.

  • @Sunderlanding Just because he was a genius and could play any style doesnt mean that he is a better musician or sounds better at all. Listen to jazz for years and lenny will seem completely standard.

  • @Sunderlanding Also understand that years ago when I knew alot less about guitaring and specifically jazz and the more technical genres I used to tell people the same stuff. " Lenny Breau is amazing" , " Lenny was the best" , "lenny this and lenny that". You've convinced yourself of something and you cant move on. He was brilliant and maybe still one of the best ever, but there are other brilliant men as well and there are others who are better than him. There are always bigger fish in the sea.

  • @Sunderlanding As someone who has got bored of normal music years ago and just been into jazz and anything else as challenging for years, I still get alot more pleasure out of some of michaels playing then out of all of lenny's playing. And dont come with this "Maybe if you don't know what they're playing" crap, I know very well what they're playing.

  • @Sunderlanding And I can name infinite guitarists that you cant properly imitate just because of how much time they spent on playing whatever bullshit it is that they play. " noone can play like lenny" is not an argument. No one can shred like rusty cooley but he is a useless guitarist.

  • @andrewkeen24 That may be true, but if you believe Lenny is a useless player you're an idiot. Rusty just plays random lame shit, where as Lenny can improvise multiple lines over complex jazz progressions. Micheal Hedge's music is very simple on a harmonic level. Sure he's got chops, but he's closer to Rusty than Lenny.

  • @Sunderlanding That's fucking retarded. He won a grammy for good music lol. You're the idiot if you don't understand what makes michael good. Remember that he consistently is rated far more highly then lenny and most proffessional accoustic guitarists love michael hedges. And I kept telling you that lenny was brilliant. You either havent listened to enough michael or you've got no sense of taste. Jazz is awesome but it's not the only good genre.

  • @Sunderlanding You don't even know what to listen for you fool. It's not about his chops, jesus.

  • @Sunderlanding Aside from the hedges vs breau stupid argument comparing different styles, many guitarists would laugh at you for thinking lenny was the absolute best. There are guitarists that you've never even heard of that are alot better then leeny was.

  • @andrewkeen24 Name one.

  • 5:42 wtf?!?! why is your guitar at eye level?

  • @rokkerdude8 its for more classical playing, thats how your supposed to hold a guitar for classical music

  • I should add that it was a great list, and included many greats (just not Kottke!)

  • LEO KOTTKE??? He paved the way for most of them, including your #1 (RIP Michael)

  • @razorsheldon Leo and Michael were both INSANE. The other people generally being mentioned i think are pathetic.

  • john butler?

  • I see this list was compiled March 21, 2009. If a revised list was compiled today, it would have to include Sungha Jung of South Korea. As of today, he has 414 songs on Youtube and includes many styles of playing the acoustic guitar. He is a young 'MASTER OF THE GUITAR'. (HWT - USA)

  • @trimblehw No, it wouldn't have to include him. Shut up.

  • @trimblehw Dude maybe when Sungha is older and has done more people will include him on their lists :)

  • Awful, you're missing Neil Young which to most people in the world is known to be one of if not the best. According to Rolling Stones he's the best living acoustic guitarist.

  • Hey another one is Mason Williams. Bonnie Raitt is not bad either.

  • I don't know if I have 15 but here is the short list for me right now. Ulli Boegershausen, Sugha Jung, Chet Adkins, BB King, Jango Reinhart, Chuck Berry, Eddie Vanhalen, James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix. Vince Gill, Igor Presnyakov, Jim Croce. That is not in any particular order and as you can see I don't discrimate types of music.

  • Where is Igor Presnyakov?

  • tommy all the way for me. eric roche could've been up there too, though really there's a ton of great acoustic guitar players out there.

  • Needs some John Williams, Maybelle Carter, Andres Segovia, Leo Kottke, Julian Bream, and if we're being generous Ottmar Liebert or Esteban (are they sell outs? Yes! Are they good? YES!), but other than that it's a perfectly fine list

  • I like how your 7-9 are touring together :-) Killin' list man, you have great taste! Thanks for the introduction to some of your favorite players (maybe someday people will see the words MY/YOUR on your list ;-) haha)

  • Where is Ewan Dobson !

  • where are Ulli Boegershausen, Sungha Jung and Iggor Presnyanov ???

  • i would prob say rory gallagher is the best acoustic player i have ever seen, even though he mostly played electric. Fact is the man could do anything he wanted on a guitar

  • Very nice. Thanks for putting this together - there are a few guys here I will certainly check out. Also - thanks for putting Tommy Emmanuel on here. In my opinion, he tops - but I won't knock anyone you have in here.

  • you should check out Paco De Lucia. you will probably enjoy

  • Stephen Stills? Look at his Crossroads on Youtube.

  • I like #5 the best....feels like I'm in an underground club living it up!!

  • Justin King is just showing off and it sounds like shit

  • @TableEnMousse I agree for the video shown (phunkdified) because it is showing off in a way and he does go off tempo a lot in that song but if you've ever heard crown or especially paris morning by him, you might be impressed. I just find it was the wrong song chosen.

  • love how stephen king plays his guitar lol kinda slash style a lol!

  • John Williams, Julian Bream, Andres Sagovia, Manuel Barrueco, The assad brothers Sergio and Odair, David Russell, .... Joe Pass... Roy Clarke.. Chet Atkins.. Tommy Emmanuel, Michael hedges, only a couple hundred more....LOL

  • well. some there are good while others there stay playing easy blues or country songs their whole lives. I think that the best of the best can only tested by playing difficult things..watch the guitarfestival youtube channel for the major leagues in guitar playing. there are Russians - Chinese teens that will play easily anything anyone on that list have ever done. search for example *Eliot Fisk* he have transcribed and performed perfectly complex violin music to guitar. .. /WbeAbllBpGo

  • @Vann7

i agree...but he did nail a couple, and Michael Hedges is certainly tops,& the best iv'e ever heard. He redefined the guitar so much,i probably won't hear such a dramatic twist on the guitar as Hedges did in my lifetime. No list is perfect, and this is no exception, but it gave me a few more to check out,so we all score either way...

  • @ZOMBIELANDakaUSA no top 10 list should be ever done without the

Latin player Jose Feliciano.contrary to many legends like Chet and others that stay playing easy music all their life.he played for decades every single genre that is possible to play.from beatles to MJ , acoustic n electric, Feliz Navidad his popular hit..you can youtube performances of Jimi Hendrix and bumble bee.which is more dificult to play and why he should be in top 10 because he can do all that and he is Blind..lol

  • That guy at #13 should slap on bass guitar..

  • kataro oshio no1.

  • Throw my 2 cents worth in......Peter Finger with "Getaway"........watch it on YT....

  • WHERE THE HELL IS IGOR PRESNYAKOV

  • chet should be on top

  • Great list. Loads I hadn't heard of to go research. Thanks for that.

    No.1 is Spot On. R.I.P.

  • Great Video!!! Can't argue with your choices. There is a guy on you tube that I think is fantastic... Per-Olov Kindgren aka AndanteLargo. I also like to listen to Pete Huttlinger. These guys are all really talented. Thanks for posting this.

  • These are all well respected men. Great list

  • tommy emanuel is number one in my opinion;)

  • Emmanuel, Justin King and Atkins !!

  • PAT METHaney

  • 15.13.12.9.8.5 all play the some style its boring. i give it all to lenny breau

  • David Grier ? He`d be near the top of any list surely. And the other flatpicking greats. Tony Rice, Clarence White, Norman Blake etc. Bert jansch? Davy Graham?

  • you shuld put paco the lucía in the first place, no doubt

  • And so which one of these guys are better than Jesse Cooke?

  • PEOPLE!!! The description says "Heres is MY list of the top 15 acoustic guitar players" To me that says its his favourite 15 yet every comment...."this list is wrong" "I cant see my favourite guitar player" make your own damn list if your that cut up about it!

  • Lenny Breau is the greatest guitarist of all time, No 1. But I don't see Andre Segovia, Carlos Montoya or Django Reinhardt even listed.

  • this list is so incorect lol! :)

  • Two words: Django Reinhardt.

Cool video, and a list of great players, but I'd love to see some variety.Lots of open-tuning and two-hand players, but as far as improvising or jazz goes, I think the only guy on the list who could hold a candle to somebody like Django or Tony Rice is Tommy Emmanuel.

  • Here is an amazing guitar player and singer from the Uk

    watch?v=Tn1WbdCbq7A

like if you agree, thanks :)

  • coulda thrown in paco de lucia..?

  • this is incorrect choice.

  • I think you can't really rate guitarists like this. They all have different qualities and techniques that can't be learned be played by the other players. However, i would like to see Antoine Dufour ranked higher here:P He has a lot of those exceptional techniques!

  • Tony Rice????? Doc Watson???

  • are they all hill billys or what. where is eric clapton? i aint heard anything like his unplugged album before or since

  • No Leo Kottke, no Doyle Dykes, no Laurence Juber.

    List no good.

  • @thisllub LOL THIS LIST DOESN'T HAVE THE GUITARISTS I WANT SO IT SUCKS LOLOLOLOL

  • I respect that it is his list not owers many he likes the calmer style of Michael quite similar to Andrew white.

  • Jp Cormier try house guitars signature dreadnought

  • @bngeohealth I as well would certainly put J.P. on this list (of course). But I find it pretty funny that this guy put Michael Hedges ahead of Tommy Emmanuel, bahahaa.

  • ♫♫♫♫♫

  • @ZapperJet he should use dadgad. all the pro's use that!

  • Joe Bonamassa should be on this list for "Woke Up Dreamin" alone, even though he isn't an all-acoustic player.

  • Thanks for posting this as I had not heard of a few of these but you simply must include Doyle Dykes and Leo Kottke.

  • wheres george harrison? :D

  • Michael COMES FIRST!!!!

  • Been around for a while... My opinion is Tommy Emmanuel is the best in the world and his constant growth and concerts all over the world has shown and has grown the appreciation of Tommy & Acoustic guitar ...Thanks for posting these wonderfull people ...they forgot Pat Metheny he plays an amazing nylon

    Cheers

    Dave Alberta Canada

  • @dwebster50 Why does Tommy never experiment in alternate tunings?

  • @MrFaulconbridge

Try going to one of his live performances & that will explain it ..... What the heck has experimental tuning has to do with being a top guitar player..... The herb ellis, Joe Pass, Tal Farlow, Martin Taylor, Bucky Pizzarelli , Fappy Lafertin , never did as well as Les Paul. Tommy has done more for acoustic guitar than anyone before him, as well as doing 300 plus single nite concerts for the last 10 years

  • damn.. justin king was messy as fuck.. man.. This list is so subjective.. You can't really quantitatively measure talent like this.

  • 6:14 It's Mickey Teutel with his chopper

  • Listen to Adam Rafferty, another great.

  • dude, Doyle Dykes ?

  • Pete Finger!

  • Scotty Anderson!

  • lawson rollins is missing! he is world class and merits one of the top positions.

  • the first is Tommy and Michael......but micheal is dead! nice video!

  • whats the name of the song that petteri is playing??

  • @TheStratrod Prime

  • This is just bullshit. How do you "rate" someone. It's your favourites. They are all good but limited to their own style. Tommy wins if you want to count notes per second perhaps. Chet wins if you want beautiful voicings and music. I agree with everyone else: wher is john williams? he's fairly handy on an acoustic as is Django R and tons of others. Thanks for the listen. Now what about 15 top beautiful women..also subjective. I'll start off with Cote de Pablo #1 or #15 who cares???

  • Django Reinhardt is in his own stratosphere

  • How about: Martin Simpson Al Petteway Martin Carthy Clive Carrol Fred Carter Jr Pierre Bensusan Will Ackerman Alex Degrassi Don Ross.... The list goes on. All of the guitarists you have in this top 25 are great players but not such great musicians!
  • Ever heard of Monte Montgomery? Just give him a listen, he should be on any ''Best of'' list. Acoustic or electric.

  • Hedges is the superior composer. He was truly a composer in the classic sense, who happened to play guitar. NONE of the others can touch him.

Check out some Michael Kelsey, from Lafayette, IN. Look at 'The Frosted Side'

  • Tommy Emmanual should be number 1 .Lindsey buckinghom should be somewhere on this list

  • Slap-tapping useless performers

  • what about thomas leeb

  • tommy emmanuel for sure

  • Tommy Emmanuel the only one

  • Tommy is the best. Performance, technique, duration.... No one is better.

  • @kneejerkmoderate Michael Hedges was a better musician though. Emmanuel is just a guitarist.

  • Laurence Juber?

  • @SwampDog1957 laurence juber is for old man

  • @MrFaulconbridge Oh forgive me O one of such vast experience and impeccable taste. I had no idea we were limiting our choices to any particular age group.

  • very easy to play...

  • preeston reed

  • eric roche

  • too much tapping and too litle playing to my taste but otherwise cool list

  • what about kyle gass?

  • @halopwner179 and igor

  • oh come on man , petteri and andy and don should be from the top 5

  • Dreadful choices

    thats all

  • @naughtyhorse the top 2 are spot on but there could be some changes on the rest of the list.

  • I love listening to Tommy Emmanual,Michael Hedges and EriK M. Also love the music of Phil Keaggy who you don't have listed. He's quite amazing on acoustic and electric.

  • The Amazing Acoustic Talents of Jerry Reed ,Doc Watson ,Roy Clark and Doyel Dykes could have made the List Easy Aswell but this is a Fantastic List and I Enjoyed it Very Much . Thanks for Posting it ..

  • I would have liked to have seen Doyle Dykes on that list, but like everything lists are subjective. I enjoyed the video.
