a few days ago a friend was (I don't know why) biten by one adult (138.5 cm) female :P

but there were no consequences from the bite...

no, it's not a venomous snake but it has some toxins in its saliva which cause local swelling and changing color in bitten parts of body

Natrix natrix is not aggresive, I think that is the most peaceful european snake. But Natrix tesselata or Coronella austriaca very often bite.

They do get that big in the UK. It is the females who have the larger heads and heavier bodies.

@Doberking I've seen my fair share, never anything even 2/3 the size of that. Even the females tend to max out about 850mm over here, though Im sure exceptional specimens do exist.

@Aco0o bjelouške su jedne od rijetkih zmija koje gotovo nikad ne grizu... smuk (bjelica) isto nije agresivna ali se nekad brani ugrizom...

@RViperC stari reci mi kako se na hrvatskom zove guž (istra)?Ja sam mislio da je to smuk,al vidim ti kažeš smuk ili bjelica,inače ta zmija je potpuno crna tako da sumnjam da se zove bjelica.Naraste oko metar i po,mislim da je najveći kojeg sam vidio bio blizu 2m...

e jbg sad... u hrvatskoj u narodu postoje dvije zmije - poskok i GUŽ...

uglavnom se pod "guž" podrazumijeva bjelica (Elaphe longissima) ili kravosas (elaphe quatuorlineata)... a ak je skroz crno onda je najvjerojatnije crna poljarica (Hierophis viridiflavus)... stavio sam lainske nazive, pa progooglaj i pogledaj slike... Bez slike ti ne mogu niš konkretnije reć...

the natrix natrix has very recognizable color pattern, but the natrix maura is here called culebra viperina, just because how much it resembles a viper, even acts like is gonna bite you if you get closer ( but in the end, they never really do that) do you have an effective method to clerarly recognize them as genus natrix and not vipera??

Natrix are much bigger than any European Viper...

And the color is a bit different... the vipers have a clearly zig-zag pattern (mostly black) while the Natrix maura has dark brown freckles on it's back...

Grass snakes bite, but ralery. Bite hurts about 10minutes, but they has not venom.

Here in Croatia they can reach up to a max. of 2m!

So that's an average snake!

the can reach that here in england as well but they average less than 3 foot cos of the temperature, great vid though i like to catch them in the summer, i always release though
