Only when a CCD camera's lens is focused at it's closest focal length, and the images are STARKLY different in edge sharpness and color, will the pixel density be greatly different in two neighboring pixels.
It takes A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT to insert a "UFO" image into a landscape photograph and be "undetectable" by an experienced computer graphics artist ... am I'm FAR from a trained, advanced degreed expert's expert ... by I can do it with CorelDraw only, it just takes time - LOL
I "dabble" in computer graphics. The way I can tell if one image has been added to another is to magnify the image down to the pixel level and look for a mismatch in pixel density changes at the edge of the suspect image.
It requires a densitometry assessment of the pixels to detect a really good faked image.
Things like hue, saturation, intensity, luminescence DO NOT make "sudden" jumps when a CCD (even at 12 megapixels) creates a photograph with the camera focused at infinity; like landscapes.
