@Vaperousdrop002 If you have a PlayBook, update it to the new OS 2.0. There isn't an app for it, but it's an under-the-hood feature included with the update allowing you to have android apps. So you can sideload android apps to the PlayBook and it will work just fine. A lot of people have already downloaded honeycomb and ice cream sandwich OS to their playbooks
@bachiboy18 February (and is not the really the android market, android developers can submit repackaged apps to the (Playbook and Future BB10) Blackberry App world
@iliStrikeRili Hey! language. just tell me. what is not true of what i said? do you like to pay $5.00 for an app that is only $1.00 for an Android tablet? Do you have Skype on your Playbook? Do you have Netflix? what do you do with your Playbook? Tell me so that i can get some use out of mine. I'm sorry but the Playbook is a brick and is dead.
There's nothing else out there for $199 that comes even close to being as good. Although you have to know how to use the tablet before you can knock it. In Canada, netflix and Hulu are garbage. So we can actually just go to our broadcasters website and watch shows for free. I actually got rid of cable since I can hook this up to my TV in any room with HDMI and just stream all the flash videos online. If there's seriously a comparable tablet in quality for $199 please post a link.
Please notice the date of this video (May 4, 2011). It is now (Jan 2012) and still no Android player. Don't be fool like I was. Do not buy a Playbook, it is junk. The Playbook does not have Skype, NO Netflix, NO Hulu, NO Kindle reader, NO Nook reader and most important NO email app which was promised a year ago. Save your money and buy and Android tablet or an IPad. The Playbook is dead. Yes is a brick.
i keep hearing ppl that they have trouble with the android player when they downloaded... this man only show some basic apps, why don't you show us an app we really want to use, perhaps netflix or google earth and stuff like that???????!! PLEASE RESPOND!!
@shadowblader45 How can i get the Andriod player? I need Skype, i would like Netflix and Hulu I also would like to get the Kindle reader or the Nook app. Why is Angry Birds $5.00 for the Playbook and only $1.00 for an Android tablet? Where is the email app? Do not be fool like I was. Do not buy a Playbook.
@Tom2736 In my opinion, everything you mentioned is useless to me, besides Netflix cause it rocks! But if you were actually doing research, you would know the they scheduled the update for Febuary. And if you didn't know the playbook has flashplayer. That means I can play games from my computer on my playbook. It may seem useless for now.If it doesn't come out that soon, then I'm fine with that, but it takes a while to put 4000000 utilities onto a playbook, then spread that to millions of others.
This is bad for the playbook. the playbook is QNX. its not android. these apps are not native apps. they are emulated apps. and with this the developers will not have any motivation to make a Blackberry app when they can just makes an android one. Rim is shooting themselves in the foot by doing this. The playbook is an awesome tablet. but its struggling because its lack of market share with QNX and the app world and all that. they do this then ditching QNX and just going with android is next.
@MrGizmo757 Im sure this was done to be more compatible with Android, etc. they have already been working with developers with the new kit which will make porting from android to QNX much easier. The android player is to make it more appealing to consumers, thus sell more units.
@itzkhak Not only did RIM drop the prices on all models, but employees at RIM were able to purchase up to 10 Playbeek at a further $100 (still taxed). I know two people that bought ten of them and sold them to friends.
@cooldude10142 I know a guy who works at RIM. They had $100 off Playbeek for a short period of time, so he bought 10 and sold them to his friends without markup!
Isn't there some version of Cynogenmod that runs on the Playbook? Seems like it'd just be way easier to run Android directly on the device rather than through an emulator.
makes me laugh , the playbooks attempt to compeat they have such a lack of apps and 3rd party support so they load up android on to it ? compleat fail if you ask me and its a shame because i had very high hopes for it
I got my playbook here in Canada with 32G for $250. I am only dissappointed (very much so) in the lack of apps. Apple has a thousand times more. None of my favorite apps from apple are available... NONE! I would take mine back unless I can get this android thing to work.
@addysub If you have a PlayBook, update it to the new OS 2.0. There isn't an app for it, but it's an under-the-hood feature included with the update allowing you to have android apps. yeah a CEO or super business man or woman's tool, and I can bet 99% your not one of them, good job on spending 300.00 on something you will never fully use. Like your brain
I highly recommend this tablet its great , i just got mine today its great dont let the size fool you its not too small its a fine size !!!! i give it a 10/10 i havent found any faults yet. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays :D !!
The playbook looks good.Had one. But too many negative things surround it.Rim is going down with 75 % lost of share prices. The limited apps and the promised upgrade of Feb-March 2012 might never come to keep this unit in competition. Making the unit androidable is still under question. Upgrades and pc connections are a drag with lots of initial failures. You are limited to only 32 Gb with no card slot. Latest Sale figures put this unit as a big failure and this was the hope to save RIM.
@nnj17 You probably found an answer already, but those categories are gone (probably to take up less screen space). But you can make folders in 2.0 and rename them whatever you want (like media or favorites). That's really the closest thing to the lists you can get. I haven't upgraded yet but I think it will be nicer in 2.0
The Playbook OS is amazing, it's smooth and flawless best OS since the iOS (i'm a huge apple fan). Blackberry shot itself in the foot when they didn't include native email/contacts and the slow updates from BB completely ruined this tablet and not to mention the HUGE lack of apps makes it almost unusable. I hope that they don't give up on this tablet it has the potential to be something great if they only get their chit together.
@Z00BONG Whenever I see people complain there's no native email. I can't help but wonder why this matters unless you use pop3. If you use corporate email than this tablet will work with your already existing BB. The bulk of the user base for this device outside of the enterprise is all going to be using web mail anyway. The only advantage to a native client would be offline messages? How many days would it hold... Would it matter? I see it as a missing feature, but not a reason for failure.
@jthomson2405 I have an old iPhone 3GS, and my experience wouldn't be as rich if I hadn't had the ability to use the native email app with my gmail account. For me it would be very important to have such an application. I am confident that RIM and third party devs will provide us with proper apps eventually, but it really is a disadvantage.
Gmail on iOS looks pretty much exactly the same on the Playbook OS. Seriously google pics of it. Maybe people don't realize apps are basically just dedicated webpages to make it easier to get what you need instead of having to follow links. Native email is a client that lets you put in your ISP email information. It's useless for WEB based email.
@MwwwwwwowwwwwwM Here's some info on how to choose. Playbook has dual cameras that captures 1080p photos and videos while the iPad 2 doesn't have as much quality. if your a person who moves around a lot you should go with the playbook. on the other hand if you are a person who spend their time most at home, the i pad is better in size to see stuff. if i remember clearly you can access your phones BBM on a play book. if you choose PB get the app Blaq for a better looking facebook.
guess what! playbook is now 199! yes sir! get it while you can i know they have it at best buy but ya better hurry cause its gonna end soon! gotta love the playbook!
RIM wouldn't it be so much easier if you changed the OS to android; you could access all apps with the android market and have a fast, customisable OS probably with Ice Cream Sandwich.
Please give this post a thumbs up to support this view and also so that RIM recognises it :)
Because first and formost this is a tablet designed with business in mind. It's the only FIPS 140-2 compliant tablet that is secure enough for government. QNX is is likely a better choice than ice-cream sandwhich in this aspect. I think they need to keep developing QNX as an OS, but now it's nice to play angry birds and use the amazon market etc while we wait for the native apps selection to grow.
@sparks6263 You can actually register it on the RIM beta site and get the new OS thats launching in February (minus a few features). So far it's incredibly fast and includes the android player. You can always revert if you have trouble but its running great so far. It won't let me post the link but do a quick search and it should come up. Enjoy!
@appleloveTK I have both, and find myself grabbing the PlayBook quite a lot, but there are some things the iPad can do that Playbook cannot - Splashtop for instance, WakeOnLan (haven't figured it out for PlayBook, anyway).
i can't wait for this! current rumours are end of fall... so let's see. hopefully it doesn't get delayed. I love the playbook, considering I use it mostly for minimal things, but having more apps on it would be a great thing.
i would never buy a tablet myself. But i hope my work does give me one to use for work (playbook, since we use bb). Or my boss said a cruel joke, but i can somewhat see why he said they'll be handing one to me. I hope its true >_<
OK, you should put window's user interface and games service(Xbox live), with QNX's multitasking and notification, android's google integration and customization, and let HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Sony, and Nokia join forces on the hardware specs and design. All these companies would form 1 super company to demolish apple with a simple 10 inch tablet. Then devs would stop making apps for iOS. A man can dream right?
This guy moves his hands so much that I can barely see the screen!
By the way why isn't BB creating its own apps and is stealing them from Android? we will have love to have more options than just Nasty Android and Apple IOS -__-
Very poor decision from Blackberry to have their own OS. Why not follow the trend and have android on it all together, rather than a weak separate app player. This hardware would have looked great with Honeycomb and MILLIONS would have bought it. CEOs of companies need to take their head out their asses and take advantage of other major companies who they can cohabit with which would then lead to growth.
@Qabz The Blackberry OS has been around MUCH longer than Android. It would be a very poor decision to scrap something that has been a staple of their products for years. RIM doesn't need to adopt another OS, they should focus on their own software and innovate. That is what separates Blackberry products from Android products. At best I can see them providing seamless Android integration into their own OS instead of just an App player, but I don't see them scrapping their own tech.
@djohnstonXCII Seem less integration with Android defeats the whole purpose of them having their own OS. Its like saying Android will integrate with ITunes market. To me this is like RIM accepting defeat by android. I agree they should continue with their own OS and try to innovate, but this in my opinion is a last minute job at trying to sell a dying product with Android. Can you think of another company who was stubborn to keep supporting their failing OS? Answer Nokia.
The only downside to this is that "always on" taskbar with the android 'back'. It takes up considerable screen space. An idea could be maybe to have it 'auto-hide' itself, and only show up when the user swipe drown from the top frame? Say with two fingers to avoid a gesture conflict... just saying!
Java/Linux are free open source platform, thats why they able to write a engine to run android applications. They can't do the same with IOS, windows or Meego Because they would have to illegally use their tools infringing on their patents. Apple would never allow that. But Microsoft and prehaps HP would
hopefully i get a response from BB on this, when you are using the android player and open another android app, does it open another "player" window? or does it kill the current android app, and open the new app in the same player window
Tried the Playbook at Phones4U and it felt sluggish, slow and felt like it strugged. No good native apps (NO EMAIL!) and tbh the screen size is way too small for a tablet
@SHAGGYSPAGECHANNEL I don't think so mate, at least not for the foreseeable future... But I hope BlackBerry ups it's phone app store, it's very poor :(

@sparks6263

@jthomson2405 Ok I recieved my playbook yesterday and I agree with you this OS has some potential!
sparks6263 2 months ago
@sparks6263 You can actually register it on the RIM beta site and get the new OS thats launching in February (minus a few features). So far it's incredibly fast and includes the android player. You can always revert if you have trouble but its running great so far. It won't let me post the link but do a quick search and it should come up. Enjoy!

I think the Playbook OS is awesome and provides a fluid experience.. I'm actually selling my iPad for this.
appleloveTK 4 months ago 47
@appleloveTK I got mine yesterday its awesome. As someone who owns all three OS types. Android and BB's OS are my favourite.
marymoocow06 2 months ago
@appleloveTK in canada they were $199, so i sold my free ipad for $800 and bought the playbook :)
xG0D1LYxRECLA1M3Rx 2 months ago
@appleloveTK I have both, and find myself grabbing the PlayBook quite a lot, but there are some things the iPad can do that Playbook cannot - Splashtop for instance, WakeOnLan (haven't figured it out for PlayBook, anyway).
gene2u 2 months ago
@appleloveTK Best part, you could sell your iPad for enough to get 2 maybe 3 16 gig playbooks! :D

Benjaminaq16 4 months ago
i can't wait for this! current rumours are end of fall... so let's see. hopefully it doesn't get delayed. I love the playbook, considering I use it mostly for minimal things, but having more apps on it would be a great thing.
amrita0286 4 months ago
Can you just install Android on it... or a true unlocked Linux of some sort ?
walter0bz 5 months ago
The latest update of the playbook kills the Android Player, careful all beta testers.
Fenicksss 5 months ago
i would never buy a tablet myself. But i hope my work does give me one to use for work (playbook, since we use bb). Or my boss said a cruel joke, but i can somewhat see why he said they'll be handing one to me. I hope its true >_<
vgorous 5 months ago
@VV0637815692 honestly speaking android is already dominating everything else...now if bbm was integrated into android that would be epic
samiamred 6 months ago
OK, you should put window's user interface and games service(Xbox live), with QNX's multitasking and notification, android's google integration and customization, and let HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Sony, and Nokia join forces on the hardware specs and design. All these companies would form 1 super company to demolish apple with a simple 10 inch tablet. Then devs would stop making apps for iOS. A man can dream right?
jioshed 6 months ago
when is this gonna be released
TheCarguy05 6 months ago
This guy moves his hands so much that I can barely see the screen!
By the way why isn't BB creating its own apps and is stealing them from Android? we will have love to have more options than just Nasty Android and Apple IOS -__-

Very poor decision from Blackberry to have their own OS. Why not follow the trend and have android on it all together, rather than a weak separate app player. This hardware would have looked great with Honeycomb and MILLIONS would have bought it. CEOs of companies need to take their head out their asses and take advantage of other major companies who they can cohabit with which would then lead to growth.
Qabz 7 months ago
@Qabz The Blackberry OS has been around MUCH longer than Android. It would be a very poor decision to scrap something that has been a staple of their products for years. RIM doesn't need to adopt another OS, they should focus on their own software and innovate. That is what separates Blackberry products from Android products. At best I can see them providing seamless Android integration into their own OS instead of just an App player, but I don't see them scrapping their own tech.
djohnstonXCII 7 months ago
@djohnstonXCII Seem less integration with Android defeats the whole purpose of them having their own OS. Its like saying Android will integrate with ITunes market. To me this is like RIM accepting defeat by android. I agree they should continue with their own OS and try to innovate, but this in my opinion is a last minute job at trying to sell a dying product with Android. Can you think of another company who was stubborn to keep supporting their failing OS? Answer Nokia.
Qabz 7 months ago
@djohnstonXCII because blackberry have litle of apps??
RIM sucks...

What happend ?? can we have access in more apps?? what i need to do?? :/
MrKAFUCKable 7 months ago
The only downside to this is that "always on" taskbar with the android 'back'. It takes up considerable screen space. An idea could be maybe to have it 'auto-hide' itself, and only show up when the user swipe drown from the top frame? Say with two fingers to avoid a gesture conflict... just saying!
eerereps 7 months ago
Java/Linux are free open source platform, thats why they able to write a engine to run android applications. They can't do the same with IOS, windows or Meego Because they would have to illegally use their tools infringing on their patents. Apple would never allow that. But Microsoft and prehaps HP would
thugbephine 7 months ago
hopefully i get a response from BB on this, when you are using the android player and open another android app, does it open another "player" window? or does it kill the current android app, and open the new app in the same player window
XxAdyGilxX 7 months ago
Tried the Playbook at Phones4U and it felt sluggish, slow and felt like it strugged. No good native apps (NO EMAIL!) and tbh the screen size is way too small for a tablet
Technocl0ud 7 months ago
love the playbook but serious lack of apps and would love a movie download app. when is this android app player available?
