Sonny Payne was the master. If you speak to Butch, he'll tell you how the drummers own the concept to Sonny in this band. Butch, Harold Jones, all the rest are monster players, and hats off. I'm playing Lead Alto in these videos. Butch left the band to go back to his own endeavors, Butch is a master of big band playing.
In my humble opinion nobody ever drove Basies band like Butch Miles in Montreux. And I've been playing 42 years so I think I can recognize the difference between a damn good drummer ,and a damn great drummer.
@colonelcorn56 I Agree With you, Butch miles is pretty unbeatable, especially when you see his drum fills in the last 8 bars of the song. Both are amazing drummers, but Butch really Butch"ered" this piece.
@acedrumminman While I am a huge fan of Harold Jones and his work in the Basie aggregation as well as after that with Sarah Vaughan, Natalie Cole and Tony Bennett, I do not agree with your Sonny Payne comment at all. Unfortunately, most of the existing video footage of Sonny on jazz drumming solo compilations are of his showman qualities. But I dare you to listen to any of the Roulette records or ones with Sinatra and tell me that he wasn't an invaluable contributor to modern big band drumming.
@acedrumminman That's a pretty bold statement. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there are people who are more qualified than others by virtue of their level of playing . I personally know four great jazz drummers ( who, by the way, happen to be much better than you) who ADMIRE Sonny Payne.
You're right about one thing- it is about musicianship, which you obviously lack, and Mr. Payne has in abundance.
Perhaps it is you who should be in the circus as a comedian.
@maynardwaltrip Wish in one hand and spit in the other and see which one is fulfilled first .And if you get Butch to play in the Band again Would you please wish us up some more gigs! Smiles

Harold Jones was the best...Sonny Payne should have joined the circus...it's about the music, not stick twirling.
