  • Spacehoppers and sweets they don't make anymore. That's pretty much Peter Kay's act right there isn't it?

  • dan the daggerman from dagenham who tortures you by putting your hair in a fax machine and pressing send

  • Quite simply series 1 and 2 of AP are the best thing since Fawlty Towers, Coogan is a genius, The Trip was a sophisticated, funny show, full of him wallowing in self-pity, that I even struggled to be cynical about after it won me over.

I guess Coogan wanted to be more than a home-grown comic genius, but it's a shame he doesn't concentrate more on the UK, and I hope The Trip and MMM is a sign of things to come.

  • i too have driven long distances munching on chocolate when depressed.

  • Never really noticed before the way the camera pans to the "GOD IS LOVE" signs whenever Alan says "Fuck off"...

  • @JenniferAubreyAjayi sadly no! There's mid morning matters on the internet and his live stuff though.

  • you bunch of cunts!!!!...what are you? social workers...

  • I really like Ricky Gervais/Steven Merchant, but I prefer this series as opposed to Extras and the Office.

  • Curb yo motha' fuckin' enthusiasm!

  • watch this mashed! tooooo funny!

  • BUCKAROO

  • go rob brydon

  • @redbeaver yeh haha

  • He's on mid-morning matters now, Alan is.

He still has hope! So do we, that's great thing about him, his naive optimism means he'll never stop trying.

  • oh in it painful.

  • But of course Alan bounces back and presents Norwich Digital Radio in a Fosters promotion series. Check out MidMorning Matters here on YouTube

  • i cant stand ricki gervais, and its annoying that he stole alot of coogans material. all round prick

  • @Blink182DudeRanch Erm ... he didn't "steal" anything. Being influenced by something is very different, and Gervais (and Stephen Merchant) definitely made it his own. I'd actually say that Gervais is more influenced by Curb Your Enthusiasm than Alan Partridge anyway.

I don't know how anyone could watch The Office or Extras and think "Wow, this is a rip off of Alan Partridge".

  • @MrVinushka Gervais stole a lot from the Partridge character to put into Brent, if you can't see that then you have not watched much Alan Partridge or David Brent for that matter. The Office and Extras sitcoms are not rip-offs of Alan Partridge but Brent is a different story altogether.

  • Brent - A superficial narcissist concerned with his self-image and presented as socially incompetent and awkward and frequently depicted in scenes that focus on cringe humor.

Partridge - A superficial narcissist concerned with his self-image and presented as socially incompetent and awkward and frequently depicted in scenes that focus on cringe humor.

You're right, I can't see the similarities. We'll also ignore Merchant/Gervais coming up with the Brent character before CYE even aired.

  • @CobaltKris I'm not denying that they're influenced by Coogan, and neither are they, but they haven't stolen anything. Besides, David Brent's a very different character to Partridge, despite the superficialities you mention. He's more like a version of Gervais if he wasn't self-aware.

  • @MrVinushka Gervais totally ripped "AP" off - Its not just about the characters lack of self awareness its all the idiosyncrasies- Look in the firs series of AP how hes always talking to the girls in reception trying to be cool- Look at how Brent acts with Dawn - Even the way Partridge accentuates some of his words or end of sentences Gervais stole that completely - Gervais just mixed in more of "The Spinal Tap" format - but caharcter wise (and to a lesser extent plot wise) its daylight robbery

  • @tiarnan76 Like I said - influence is not the same as plagiarism. Ricky is the first to admit that Steve Coogan is a great influence on him, but The Office (and Extras) is an original creation.

Plus Coogan himself is a fan of The Office - I doubt he would be if he thought it was "daylight robbery". In fact, I think Armando Ianucci said that part of the reason he was unhappy with AP S2 was because The Office came out at the same time and it looked dated and less sophisticated in comparison.

  • @MrVinushka

Actually, The Office is a very obvious rip-off of a segment featured in "The Day Today" (from 1994) which was co-written by Iannucci and Chris Morris to name but two. (The series itself also being the launch-pad for AP himself). Go look up "The Day Today - Disassemblage" on YouTube.

  • @clydebear Yes, I'm a big fan of The Day Today and the thought did occur to me as well. I think it's easy to draw similarities between the two, and I'm sure Gerv/Merch saw it, but while it may have been a jumping pad for The Office, I wouldn't say The Office is a "rip-off". They're still completely different except for the superficialities.

Otherwise you could go on to say that Chris Morris ripped off Victor Lewis-Smith, or South Park ripped off The Simpsons etc. Everything starts somewhere.

  • @MrVinushka Agreed. I've never thought Gervais ripped off Partridge. Brent and Partridge are in that tradition of lead characters in British sitcoms. There are elements of Fawlty and Rigsby in Partridge too. But what the hell? Partridge is for me the best and funniest of them all, the way his character has evolved from On The Hour right up to Mid Morning Matters is incredible.

  • @BAGTOP1234 It's Steve Coogan, and he was my neighbour for a number of years. Nice enough bloke, but not so friendly and a poor neighbour.

  • It's Rob Brydon.

  • Needles to say... I am so sad it's over. Great poignant ending. Thanks for posting the series.

  • I want a toblerone!!

  • 4:17, it's rob brydon

  • Alan's back. Nov 5th. Fostersfunny[dot]com

12 x 11 minute episodes of a new show called Mid Morning Matter with Alan Partridge.

    Written by Coogan and Iannuci,

  • @ROBBIEWILLIAMSISGOD For real?How do i check it out

  • If by sad you guys mean hilarious, then yes, very sad

  • .... KOJACK!

  • The bouncin back isnt him deluding himself so much as him trying to get out of his breakdown which he desperate 2do,the whole point (for me) of the anecdote "dont be blue peter" is that he can tell anecdotes and well so its sort of affirming, also you notice evertime he gets insulted in that party it flashes to a the wall "God is love" or "God is salvation" &he just doesnt seem to be getting any help, that bit that flashes back where he says "not very happy" always gets me..

  • I can still smell you, how gross.

  • Brilliant

  • Kinda feel sorry for Alan at the end.

  • @RuddigerReno He didn't 'take' anything. Just because it was slightly depressing didn't mean he copied the same story or theme, it just happened to end on a low note.

  • Rob Brydon: "Fuck off!" LMAO

  • @rainroom16. Yes.

  • AND don't forget neil jones who wrote its long way to the top - i see youuuuuu..

  • rob brydon before his ascent

  • Who wouldn't want to read that book?

  • "needless to say i had the last word now fuck off!!"

  • Such a sad last 10 minutes :'(

  • KOJAK!

  • he said you jammy bastard and quick as a flash i replied don't be blue, peter

  • steve coogan please pull your finger out of your arse and stop making rubbish movies to go back to what your good at

  • fat toblerone alan: so priceless

  • so depressing when he sees his book destroyed

  • I wanna marry him and laugh forever....

  • @WKalliber

You've been making a habit of going on Alan Partridge videos making smutty, puerile comments.

Are you, as Alan might say, clinically fed up!?

  • the ending is sad :(

  • Hahaha, ''gan on Lynne Las!'' Micheal is fucking class.

  • I can't believe there was only 2 series made! A Partridge comeback special would go down a treat. " Kiss my face"

  • KOJAK!

  • I didn't recognise Rob Brydon for ages.

  • Rob Brydon :)

"Have to say it didn't really work for me.."

    "Fuck off"

  • I feel so sorry for him at the end :'(

  • Brilliant. Thanks for posting, just had to watch them all from start to finish - and now life is empty. Where's the Toblerone...

  • kinda wanted him to make it big in the end, even though he's a pretty big arsehole

  • Hello, Alan Partridge, I've come to see my book being pulped.

  • FUCK OFFF!!!

  • Rob!

  • What's that song at the end? I really like it, ignorant Yankee that I am.

  • The song is "windmills of your mind" and I don't know who sung it.

  • Sung by The King's Singers

  • Comment removed

  • hes awesome hahahaha hes blue, peter hahahha

  • Book pulp makes me feel hungry.

  • sorry i cant remember where i read tht he is meant to be doin a movie but i deffo read that he is doin one called im still alan partridge

  • KOJAK!!!!!!111

  • And thats Alan. Tottering off into the history books, unpulped - Ahaa

  • KOJAK!

  • IT LOOKS LIKE PORRIDGE! WORD PORRIDGE!

    oh, alan.

  • "i have to say, it didn't realy do it for me"

    "fuck off"

  • "did you see her thrashing around in there..."

  • i dont get it at the end of series 1 he had a 5 year contract even tho the guy died but he signed it himself . he should have had another show, apart from that road thing

  • I think what happened was that the BBC immediately spotted the fake signature and sent him packing. He went into a depression which led to a toblerone addiction and breakdown. As you can see when he tries to make a speech and has flasbacks of his drive to Dundee, the 'bouncing back' is a self-delusion. His life is a fucked up as it ever was

  • He did go back to the BBC, but apparently there was still too much 'Bad Blood' between them and according to him they were still 'Shits' as it were, so it all fell through I guess.

  • Gold.

  • Is that Rob Brydon?

  • Yeah him and steve coogan work well to together.

  • Cojak!

  • Kojak, not Cojak

  • rob brydon! awesome

  • Can we have season 1 posted, please?? Pretty please?

    oh, alan

    how i love thee

  • so sorry about that before. you caught me at a bad moment

perfectly understandable. so! i hear your book's being pulped.

    fuck off!

  • anyone find the ending to this series particularly depressing?

    cos i do

  • i know wat u mean , coogan said he was gonna kill off the character if there was a third

  • Was just on here to post exactly that - it's really tragic like for the first time ever he lets the mask slip and you see what a depressing life he really has and how bitter he is because he knows he hasn't 'bounced back'. :o(

  • @rainroom16 don't worry, you'll bounce back

  • @rainroom16 Comedy = tragedy + distance.

  • Gervais, Walliams, Lucas and co owe a big debt to Alan Partridge. ie they nicked a lot of his style and jokes

  • agreed. although walliams and lucas are shit.

  • lol

  • @jj9749 and peter kay

  • @jj9749

  • @jj9749 true! he is much much better!!

  • "cant get me toe on the trigger" lol

  • ...amazing, but what is the song that plays at the end does any one know?
